Just talent. JC's are down this year, only a couple guys look to be top 5 rounds quality and none top 2 rounds like last year when we knew Pearson and Little were premium guys in the fall.

Will baseball ever allow all draft picks to be traded at some point?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:41
I think it'll be something that will need to be included in a group of things one side really needs. Doesn't seem like either side is motivated to make this happen, but it also seems inevitable. May be the next CBA, may be in 20 years but I'd expect it eventually

12:42
Is Jorge Guzman a potential front line starter or are you worried about his secondary offerings?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:42
There's a small chance he could be, but that's more than 99% of pitchers in the minors. More on him here: https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/2018-top-100-prospects/

12:42
If Travis Swaggerty continues to hit anywhere near this level the rest of the way (OBP + more pop), does he sneak into the discussion at the top of the draft?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:43
Probably not the top 5, but I could see him going 6-10

Over the weekend on Twitter you said McClanahan, Gorman, Liberatore, Hankins, and Singer were all the guys in the running to go 1-1. No more high school and no college bats? Madrigal? Conine? Kelenic?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:46
I definitely didn't say that. If you define it as anyone with a chance to go 1-1, the group is like 10 guys right now. If you mean the favorites if the draft was today, there's a top tier of 4 at the moment, from what I've gathered: Gorman, McClanahan, Madrigal, Rolison, with Rolison seeming to be the last of that group but trending up. Singer has been well below his best self this spring and that becomes more worrisome when his delivery/slot is a little unusual and him not signing due to a physical issue out of HS.

Is Jeff Belge still a decently regarded prospect now that he's at St. Johns?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:46
Hasn't really delivered on the big promise, but big dude with average stuff from the left side and some ceiling, so a top 3 round guy for 2019.

Anything on Luis Gonzalez' kid in SF system?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:47
Big power, but probably a 1B and R/R, so really needs to hit
Jeff
12:47
Thoughts on Triston Casas and John Malcolm? Can either survive a move to LF or RF as a pro?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:48
Casas probably just 1B, Malcolm better shot for OF. Casas is a fringe 1st rounder right now due to plus plus raw, Malcolm more middle rounds

Out of curiosity, how often do you attend a game and see a competitor (minors guy for another website)? When this happens, do you sit next to each other and compare notes or keep your distance?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:49
Pretty common. Different levels of interaction with each person, some sit and compare notes and catch up, others more of a head nod and keep to themselves.

What position does Julio Pablo Martinez end up playing and does the fine affect who he signs with?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:49
CF. Nope. Would expect the Rangers.

12:49
If it were permitted, would having 4 DSL teams be a worthwhile investment?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:50
Absolutely. I know some orgs have their int'l dept bugging the GM about it currently. You'd have to be pretty bad/unlucky to not have a solidly positive ROI from that investment, it's just a longer time horizon to payoff. Some teams add a team when they've gone over the spending limits, then get rid of it after they go back to signing normal levels of players, but now you can't go wild so I wouldn't expect to see that.

Am I crazy to think that if you're a fringe bat position player with a strong arm, you should immediately try and learn how to play catcher? Like, not everyone could do it obviously, but if you're like an okay defensive 3rd baseman who hits like a middle infielder, you're not making it to the bigs any other way.
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:52
That's common, especially with fringe college types that may only get drafted if they can catch. I know scouts tried it with Michael Chavis in HS so it isn't just fringy guys. Problem is catching is really hard and it also demands a specific arm action/exchange, so some guys arms play down in that setting. Like some guys throw 95 on the mound and have an average arm in the OF, then plus at SS...there's some mechanical things about the positions that do weird things to arm strength, mainly body position and kinetic chain and all that. Very specific to the player.

AJ Puk also throws a 2 seam fastball now. Dude is going to be in MLB mowing people down this year.
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:53
The sad part is that we all know pitching prospects can fall as quick as they rise. Fingers crossed
Colby
12:53
Seems like you guys are pretty high on Vilade. Could he be a mid-season top 50? 100?
Hans Gruber
12:54
Some scouts were "unimpressed" with Ohtani's pitching debut. Does he really have "ace" type stuff? Does he eventually stick to pitching only? Am I overusing quotation marks?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:54
It was his first spring outing please stop this
And also it was pretty good anyway
Colby
12:54
Hunter Renfroe a 40 FV guy now? Didnt see him on any of your former prospect coverage
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:54
45
Ricky
12:54
How will Ronald Guzman’s bat translate to the big leagues?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:54
I'm a little lower than Eric, but he's likely a 45 or 50 FV
Hans Gruber
12:54
Alex Verdugo: the Dodger's version of Jesse Winker, or something more exciting (more power)?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:55
More athletic, better hitter and defender, but not super different from far away, both bat first corner guys without huge power
Vic
12:55
At what level are minor leaguers given access to advanced reports on opposing pitchers/lineups?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:56
More than a few teams give Low-A clubs some basic stuff about tendencies, like a one-sheeter for the series.
Colby
12:56
How do you feel about a Kyle Muller Breakout this year?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:56
Feeling good, thing the arm speed is all the way back now (95 in some training stuff off a mound a few weeks ago via Driveline) and he looked good late last year in Danville
