Typically that's done with bunts and speed, possibly elite bat control to place soft liners over the IF, since these sorts of models have a lot of trouble with those things. Don't have a specific answer for Contreras.

Is the gap between Keibert Ruiz and Will Smith closing?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:38
I'd say they're around the same

Any thoughts on Mountcastle’s BP in Washington ?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:38
Pretty similar to the amateur ones I'd seen from him

Seth Beer should finish the year in high A and potentially push for a big league spot next summer. Even though questions persist, is this how advanced of a bat he was considered coming in?

Maybe pump the brakes after 29 pro games

The Futures Game and ASG were remarkably similar. Impressive pitching with even more impressive homers.

Shocking how we haven't heard the old baseball writers complaining the game is garbage this week. So tired of that nonsense.  May write about this later, but pitchers throwing 100, breaking off GIFable breaking pitches while hitters celebrate hitting massive homers that are increased in frequency by coaching/analytics along with fewer weak ground balls and stale, boring non-action in a game populated by enthuastic, charismatic young players....I mean Meg and Carson would hate that run on sentence but do you think encouraging that stuff will drive interest or shaving 4 minutes off the game and outlawing shifts? It's insane the things that the leadership of this sport thinks drive interest.

Is Diaz a good get for Baltimore?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:44
Seems like about what they should've hoped for: a near-ready, fringe top 100 hitter with a solid 2nd piece (45 FV I'd guess) and a lottery ticket 3rd piece (40 FV with upside). There has been higher prices paid for rentals, but not amazingly higher.

is one element of the trackman/statcast revolution that some teams are taking advantage of other teams inability to translate the data into PD ? are we already starting to see it with Hou/Pit and pitching
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:45
There were definitely clubs that I was more eager to suggest we trade with, when we knew they were behind us in various aspects of analytics or development or struggle with a certain kind of player, etc.

Who are the top 3 players I should watch at the Baseball Factory/Under Armour HS Showcase at Wrigley Field this Friday?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:47
CJ Abrams, Bobby Witt Jr, Riley Greene and Rece Hinds are the best players there, in some order. Brennan Malone, Matthew Allan and Jerrion Ealy are probably next best.
Daniel McKiley
12:47
If you had full control over the Futures Game (selection process included) what would you do?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:49
Just invite the best players instead of capping it at 2 per team. I'd consider AL/NL instead of US/World. I'd probably be fine with 1 player per team just so more people watch. I'd definitely have a skills competition

Does Yusniel Diaz's ETA move up with a trade to the O's? Does he overtake Mountcastle as their top prospect? Also with his 2 HR performance, do you see his projections going up?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:50
We have the O's list currently as a pretty clear top 3 of Hays, Mountcastle and Hall, and you could probably put those in any order. Diaz jumps into that group and probably in the top 3, but we haven't lined them up yet.

Snell seems...kind of low?Do teams not buy him as a frontline guy?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:50
I think some do, but...pitchers man

Kiley, it has come to my attention that there is no player page for the Dodgers Will Smith! Can you please help me to notify whoever it is at Fangraphs that can remedy this situation?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:52
I just google will smith dodgers fangraphs and it takes me there. something weird in the search bar with the super common name

Was Paul Dejong left off of the Trade Value list due to his defense or due to his injury? If neither what is he missing because he seems to be undervalued/under-discussed to me.
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:54
Not huge tools, athleticism or upside, some think he's already peaked and is a 2.5 WAR guy going forward. That's really valuable with lots of control but you need a little more upside to crack the top 50. Also, the K's are a little high and the BB rate was really low until 49 games this year, so would like to see a little more before we know what the true talent level is, especially for a non-pedigree guy that very few thought could do this. It's not so much that he hasn't done enough, but about how execs project him going forward.

Any chance Taylor Trammell sneaks into the 55 tier?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:55
Probably the prospect that increased his stock the most in DC. Power was more than anyone had seen before, so some tool grades changed.
Danny
12:56
You and Eric are obviously high on Andujar and I assume you expect his plate discpline and defense to improve (even if neither would be considered "plus"). Would you sign Machado in the offseason to play 3B and trade Andujar (hopefully) for pitching or just concentrate the $$ elsewhere?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:57
Don't know if I would, but could definitely be talked into that. Maybe something like Andujar for Carlos Martinez and sign Machado?
Justin
12:57
Kiley, I'm seeing consistent reports that Brailyn Marquez is hitting 97-99 every time out, and sitting 94-96. Time to get excited about him?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:57
Have heard up to 96 but not that kind of velo. Believe Eric will see him soon.
Josh
12:57
How much does an impressive Futures Game performance raise a player's stock? Will someone slightly off the national radar (like Trammel) get a bump in Top 100 lists?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:58
Doesn't matter like any one game doesn't matter. But, if the tool grades change, then guys will move up. There were a few of those but Trammell the most notable.

12:58
Do some teams have an advantage in international scouting? Is it because of monetary investment? or just strategic choice?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:59
Certain teams do the smart thing and treat int'l scouting with the same level of process and resources as domestic scouting. It's like 3-5 teams right now and they're generally beating everyone else down there. If I'm a GM I'm really embarrassed if I'm not one of those teams b/c there isn't an excuse--it's basically free money if you just try.

Are teams allowed to place heart rate sensors or other things like that on players within game to track how this fluctuates based on situation
AvatarKiley McDaniel
1:00
I believe the players have to agree but I know some do, like Russell Martin has at least in the past.

This is random, but to piggy back on your response on Kela/Giles...do you know how teams would quantify someone having the right mental makeup to handle a late inning relief role? Seems like your sources were right on Giles, was just wondering if there's any obvious tells that people look for
AvatarKiley McDaniel
1:02
I've heard stories about Giles, Kela, Daniel Bard and Craig Hansen, among others, where sources specifically, before they were notable prospects, told me this is why I don't think this guy can hack it in the big moment, or doesn't have the work ethic, or something similarly important to projecting a player. It's obviously very subjective but often ends up being at least partially true.

Have you seen Wander Franco play? Did unicorns descend from the skies on rainbows?
