My guess is that it's status quo bias: Alonso was the primary 1B last year and moving him to DH would constitute a change. I don't know anyone who'd argue Alonso is a better defensive 1B than Smith; Smith is probably a 70 there. Even if you love Alonso's glove, it's a 50, and I'd argue it's less. So  what explanation is there? Inertia.
