i'm in 7x7 (+OBP & TB) and fangraphs auction calculator has william contraras in the top 30 for hitters in the league. I was going to reach for him in the 7th round because of this, do you trust it? or is this stupid because catcher position is so deep this year

I trust the value - getting both OBP and TB is a huge boon for his profile. But whether to reach is a different kettle - if its a 10/12ish teamer with one catcher, I'm probably not going to pay a huge premium.

Don’t know if you can address this, but, in a case like Giolito (or, hopefully not, Cole), if the contract is insured, can the team place the player on the IL and use the insurance money to sign a different player without exceeding the CBT levels?  For example, could the Yankees sign Snell, after putting Cole on the IL, without financial penalty?

I don't think so - in most cases, I believe that insurance will only pay if it's deemed a career-threatening/ending injury

Of the "current closers", I'd take Mason Miller. His price should be higher but the crappiness of Oakland holds it down. But the talent is elite and I think he'll still get plenty of IPs with sexy ratios even when the Saves are light as Oakland should want to keep his innings up.
but also, it's Oakland, so...
