Tucker is ready to take another step forward, although I think he's pretty damn good right now.!!!  Alvarez is the better hitter obviously but if you include Tucker's D, I think he's one of the top 25 players in the sport

Do you feel that Vaughn Grissom can manage the shortstop position effectively for that braves or do you think they will be looking to upgrade at the deadline?
Jim Duquette
3:24
I think the Braves are watching that closely but my old friend Ron Washington is so good at helping defensive infielders, that I wouldn't doubt Grissom's play by the middle of the season

do you think Adley Rutschman has what it takes to be a MVP one day?
Jim Duquette
3:25
yes, I think Adley will be in the MVP talk regularly... keeping him in the lineup and managing his catching workload is important though.... he needs to play 150+ games minimum and combined between catching and DH/1b to maximize his numbers

I’m a sophomore in high school with hopes of being a GM one day for a major league club. Any advice?
Jim Duquette
3:27
yes, I give similar advice to people when they ask this question ... get your college degree, try to secure an internship with a team during one or two of those 4 years of college... get some basic knowledge of coding (its a differentiator these days ) and you'll have an above average chance of getting a job.... but its highly competitive !!!!

If Alvarez plays 140+ what would you expect from him?
Jim Duquette
3:27
if he plays 140 and his hand/wrist if fine... he'll be top 3 in the MVP race in the AL!

Opinion on Scott Harris on Detroit Tigers? Love his philosophy on hitting with controlling the count. What was your philosophy you lived by as GM? Congrats on your success in the big leagues!
Jim Duquette
3:30
Scott is off to a good start in Detroit because he recognizes that they have a long way to go in their development and scouting system.... his and AJ's hitting philosophy is similar and acquiring those type of players or developing as many as you can will be their key... I loved hitters who made contact AND controlled the strike zone and we rewarded our minor leaguers with cash and tee shirts on a weekly and monthly basis to emphasize their importance

Do you believe the Mets have faultered in not signing Trevor Bauer once this rotation got news of Quintana's injury, considering Bauer is in his prime, is a former Cy Young award winner, and would have been making the minimum?
Jim Duquette
3:30
no, I would not have signed Trevor for NY, its not a good fit there
Aaron
3:30
Hey Jim, so great to see you doing this! What was your biggest “near-miss” as a GM?
Jim Duquette
3:32
I almost got Bartolo Colon or Ervin Santana and Erik Aybar for Miguel Tejada... it would have been an organization game changer in Baltimore.   the other was missing out on drafting Justin Verlander for the '04 draft, we picked third , right behind Detroit

Always love seeing your hypothetical trade proposals. Any interesting mock trade proposals you’ve come up with recently?
Jim Duquette
3:33
hahaha, there will be more coming later in the summer, the trade market is pretty quiet right now. but just wait if the Angels fall out of the race. I'll have plenty of Ohtani trade proposals it'll make your head explode .... and probably mine too!
Sherry Magee for the HOF!
3:34
Jim, we know the Kazmir trade is one you wish you could do over. What's a move you made that you would do again in a heartbeat?
Jim Duquette
3:35
I was involved with the decision to acquire Piazza when Steve Phillips was the GM... no brainer
Andrew
3:35
what Is it like negotiating with Scott boras?
Jim Duquette
3:37
its like standing in a completely dark room and trying to hit the center of a dartboard .... you have very little knowledge of the teams he's negotiating with and if your offer is ever good enough
Brian

First time commentor...........curious what your thoughts are as to why the orioles continue to be overlooked amongst postseason teams this season and what are your thoughts on their development?  I see a possible strong every day lineup, strong bullpen, and an underrated rotation also.
Jim Duquette
3:39
glad you joined the "fray" ! the Orioles didn't really acquire much this winter on the pitching front, they sat on the sidelines because of the expense and contract size... so people are using that as the reason to undervalue them... BUT they have so much  prospect capital that they can make a deal for any pitcher available this summer, which makes them a real threat..... what if Corbin Burnes becomes available ??? sign me up for that in Baltimore !!!!!!

Thanks for the reply, love your work on SNY
Jim Duquette

thanks !

As a GM how often are you guys working? Is it 24/7 keeping up with players/contracts/agents/etc.
Jim Duquette
3:41
its a 24/7/365 job and managing people is an under rated job description .... the front offices are probably 20-30 people deep compared to when I was in a front office....  never mind the convos with players, agents, owners, etc

When you see the spring that the Mets Ronny Mauricio is having is it tempting to find a spot for him this season at the ML level or do you still go with the philosophy the front office likely had heading into the spring of getting him more seasoned in the minor leagues?
Jim Duquette
3:43
we have to keep in mind that Mauricio played winter ball and therefore had a head start on seeing pitching and getting his timing down .. so his numbers look better than everyone else's currently... what he did last year is a better predictor of his future production this season

3:43
Do you believe the Mets/Eppler made a mistake last year in respect to their trade deadline moves? Needle moving players like Juan Soto, Josh Hader, and Luis Castillo were all available
Jim Duquette
3:44
well , they needed more impact than what they got
David Forst
3:45
Is the A's analytics dept far behind everyone else now? Apparently only a 5 person staff and their recent trades have been widely panned.
Jim Duquette
3:46
I think they are far behind most everyone in MLB at the moment
Matt
3:47
Hi Jim, what are your thoughts on Jarred Kelenic this upcoming season? Do you think he'll be able to establish himself as a regular for the Mariners?
Jim Duquette
3:48
I am hopeful that he has made the changes necessary to be more consistent for Seattle so I'm bullish on him this year

Hey Jim!  Big fan or your work, especially on SNY.  As a Mets fan I've always wondered how close you were to signing ARod as a free agent in 2000 and if you did how you think that would have changed the trajectory for the Mets and for your career in the front office as well?
Jim Duquette
3:50
we were not that close, because of the Rangers offer at the end of it
John
