Realmutu is SO impressive. He's the type of athlete and player that stands out head and shoulders above the competition. ANd the competition is the best in the world

Hi Ryan! Jewish Red Sox fan here, congrats on your career. I was wondering if you had any trepidations playing for Israel considering the way they treat the Palestinian people?
Ryan Lavarnway

Baseball is a place where we can put differences aside and meet on a level playing field. A common ground. I'm not a politician

Ryan, thanks for doing this!! How important is Judaism in your life. Did you have any Jewish baseball players you looked up to as a kid?
Ryan Lavarnway
10:53
Shawn Green was the only Jewish player on the Dodgers. I looked up to him SO much. His baseball card said he was 6'4" 225 lbs. That was how big I always wanted to be. When I got drafted, that was the height and weight I reported even though neither number was true. One day I met Shawn and told him that story, and he said, I was never 225 either!

Obviously there have been the big couple of scandals recently. Without going into specifics, have you heard talk or do you know of any other teams who stole signs? Not necessarily with a buzzer system but maybe something more old school?
Ryan Lavarnway
10:54
Every team was trying to steal signs in some way. Teams still do it when the catcher puts fingers down instead of using pitchCom. Shoot, Venezuela was 100% signaling sings to the hitter from the runner on second base during the WBC. As long as it happens on the field, it's always been part of the game. It's up to the defense to stop it

What was going through your mind getting DFAd/claimed by three different teams in three week period?  Imagine you just feel stressed to the max!
Ryan Lavarnway
10:55
That was a weird couple of weeks. Every time my phone rang my wife would ask, "what team are we on now?"

Great job on your perseverance!  Thanks for doing this chat. I hope you enjoyed your brief time in Cincinnati. Any memories of being in town?
Ryan Lavarnway

Thank you! I loved my short stint in Cincy. I wish it had been longer. That stadium there is really nice! And there's a sneaky food scene there too

Ever encounter someone you played against that was super cool?

I believe I recall one night you hit 3 HR with the Reds shortly after joining them.  That was wild to see.  Had you caught any of the opposing pitchers previously?  Anything else that might have given you an edge that night?  Thanks!  Best!

Hey Ryan, loved watching your clutch moments for Israel and absolutely loved that you put the "Yud" on your chest protector. What future role do you see yourself having with the Israeli team?
Ryan Lavarnway
10:57
Not sure what role, but I want to stay involved

Ryan, congratulations on the career, seeing more position players pitching in blowout games.. good or bad for baseball?
Ryan Lavarnway
10:58
I loved the three times I got to pitch in AAA. It gives the team a mental break and can raise the vibes if a guy throws 40 MPH and gets someone out. The best plan is to try and not get blown out in the first place lol

Hi Ryan, I have gone to see the Sea Dogs several times and always had a good time. My question is: how do you transition to retiree- do you still work out, keep your skills up in case a team says please? Jeff Conine (I believe) started doing triathlons.
Ryan Lavarnway

I've done two Ironman 70.3's already. Looking forward to doing more. Beyond that, I'll have to let you know
Go Reds!

I'm a fan of "When in Rome, do as the Romans do"... so when I'm in Cincy, I will eat it like a local!

Was there ever a baserunner you were afraid of when they were on first?
Ryan Lavarnway
11:02
I was catching Steven Wright's knuckleballs with Billy Hamilton on base. That was stressful.

Alright, thank you guys! It's time to go wake my daughter up from her nap. This was fun, and I'd love to do it again sometime!
