Would something like 3 and $30M-35 with a player opt out after one year land Keuchel at this point?
Tim Dierkes
3:12
I imagine he'd rather go get 1/21, lose the draft pick compensation, and then expect to get more than $14MM from 2020-21.
Halo fan
3:12
how soon before Phillie fans turn on Harper?
Tim Dierkes
3:13
I expect a lot of ups and downs.  That pretty much has to be the case over 13 years.  There will be some seasons where he's an MVP contender.  Others where he has significant injury.  The fans will alternately love and hate him.

Will the Dodgers go after Trout in '20 if he's a free agent? I could see him having interest if he really likes SoCal but wants to actually contend for a title
Tim Dierkes
3:15
So this winter us MLBTR writers put our heads together and wondered if, given the special case of Bryce Harper, the Dodgers would break form and offer 10+ years on a huge free agent contract.  Reportedly they wouldn't go beyond five, even if it meant pushing the AAV past $40MM.  I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee that says, 'Fool me once, shame on ... shame on you. Fool me... You can't get fooled again.
My way of saying that I'm not going to pick the Dodgers for Trout based on present information.

Is Robles the front runner for NLROY?
Tim Dierkes
3:17
I think yes, but Nick Senzel is a close second.

With all the rending of garments, gnashing of teeth, and clutching of pearls, the reality is the Yankees decided to forego Manny and Harper last year when they got Stanton instead, at what they believed was a relative bargain.  Turned out to be wrong, but that's another story.
Tim Dierkes
3:17
That may well be true.  Similarly, we didn't know it at the time, but the Cubs signing Darvish and Chatwood was them deciding to forego Bryce Harper.

Which of your 2019-2020 free agents are most likely to be traded at the deadline?
Tim Dierkes
3:18
Madison Bumgarner and Nick Castellanos are a couple of strong picks there.

What do you put the odds of Goldschmidt signing an extension with the Cardinals at?
Tim Dierkes
3:21
I'll go 40%.  On the one hand, I think his ultimate contract is in the four-year, $100MM range, and it's easy to see the Cards getting there.  On the other, Goldy is likely not inclined right now to take another contract some would perceive as below market, so he may wait until free agency and find out the hard way that a 32-year-old first baseman isn't getting a five-year deal and a guy projecting at less than 4 WAR in 2020 isn't getting $30MM/year.

Trout to the Phillies. 8 year's at 350.
Tim Dierkes
3:22
I don't think that's enough money.  But Trout/Harper in the same OF would be so fun.

Do you think there is any chance of a salary floor put in place or at least proposed as part of the next CBA? As a Pirate fan, I think it's a great idea. As a baseball fan it seems like it would be good for players, fans, and make it more difficult for certain teams to blatantly "tank." Am I wrong?
Tim Dierkes
3:24
I do think it could be part of the solution.  So crucial would be where the levels are set.  We've seen that with the competitive balance tax.  When it was introduced it was a Yankees tax, but now it's affecting the spending of 5-7 teams and it's definitely serving as a de facto salary cap.

You think the Phillies stand pat after Harper or could they add Kimbrel/Keuchel/Gio Gonzalez
Tim Dierkes
3:26
There's no specific sign that they plan on going after Keuchel/Kimbrel (Gio kind of doesn't matter, he's a #4 starter).  It could be a missed opportunity, because I still think the Nats are better right now and 1-2 wins beyond what Eflin/Velasquez can provide, if they were to sign Keuchel, could get that the division title.

With the Yankees currently being much more focused on profit, than going all in to win now, do they pursue any of the 2019-20 free agents? Gerrit Cole, perhaps?
Tim Dierkes
3:29
Normally I'd say they'll go after Cole as "the one that got away."  But the club definitely has more limits than they did under the Boss.  The Yanks will have to replace or pay Didi and Betances after this year, so that could be their offseason.  Or they could think bigger picture and acknowledge that after 2020, Tanaka and Paxton could depart, and they wouldn't have much in the rotation after Severino.

Please tell me Adam Jones won't be blacklisted out of Major League Baseball just because his defense made him replacement level last year. Surely that would be going too far? Colby Rasmus got a ML deal last offseason for crying out loud.
Tim Dierkes
3:30
I don't think Jones is being blacklisted.  Teams are just stingier with MLB deals for fourth OF types these days (like Carlos Gomez), and Jones may have been viewing himself as a starter earlier in the offseason.

Guess on Bogaerts FA contract?
Tim Dierkes
3:31
To throw out a number, something like nine years and $216MM makes sense to me.

What can the Giants do with the remaining free agency/trade market to make themselves contenders this year?
Tim Dierkes
3:32
Basically nothing.  They've got one of the worst farm systems in the game, the FA market offers maybe 5 WAR if you sign everyone, and they're a 75 win team.

You  see Keuchel getting 100M? Scale of 1-10, 10 being the highest possibility
Tim Dierkes

Can I go with 0?

Why are the comments turned off for the Giants CEO story?  You site is the best place to read about trade rumors, but you are transforming it via comments and chats into a good place to talk the business of baseball.  Blocking comments on certain topics destroys that.  Ban or block the trolls and allow discussion on all things baseball.
Tim Dierkes
3:35
When I started MLBTR, it was not a goal of mine to police and moderate people's comments on domestic violence or things of that nature.  From what I've seen thus far when we did have comments on for these types of topics, I'm not interested in hosting that discussion or using our resources to do so.  So, we'll pass along the news because it affects the way the team is run, but you've got many other options to discuss that video.

Removing the downvote has removed some of the negative behavior from your comments section, but with trolls and bullies now commenting the word "dislike" or "downvote" and still discouraging positive participation, what are your next steps?
Tim Dierkes
3:36
I will have to assess and see if whatever is happening at present is enough to constitute a problem.  I was never passionate about having downvoting in the first place, and whatever fun that might have been for some people, a few ruined it for everyone by, for example, heavily downvoting sentimental stories about Nick Cafardo's passing.  I mean...c'mon.

Why aren't the Reds being mentioned on Keuchel...he's a fit especially if they can keep his years wanted down... your thoughts
Tim Dierkes
3:38
They've got their starting five locked in.  They're going to bump one of the three new acquisitions, nor do Castillo or Desclafani deserve it.  It would be great to be six-deep in the rotation like that, but there's a human cost to sending one of the current guys to the bullpen.

What would it take for the Jays to sign Vlad right now?
Tim Dierkes
3:41
No one with less than a year of service has ever gotten more than $26MM.  Maybe if you doubled that and put like a $25MM option on his first free agent year, you'd get Vlad's attention.  But I have to think there's already some hard feelings, since he should have been up around May of last year and he continues to wait.  Similar to Kris Bryant - I'm sure there's a number, both then and now, at which the Cubs could have extended him post-service time shenanigans, but that number would have to shatter all precedent.

Why does every writer on this site automatically dismiss the cards ability to sign goldschmidt to an extension? It’s really not that hard to see them getting it done.
