What's the deal with Nick Senzel not being called up?
Tim Dierkes
2:23
I don't see the Gennett injury as a reason to put him on the Opening Day roster - they've jerked around his position so many times that I do think he should continue just playing CF.  As to whether 100 innings in Triple-A will make a difference as he learns that position, I don't know, but I do think it would help a bit.  Senzel is not exactly a Vlad Jr situation, and I do think they were prepared to call him up last year had he not been hurt.

Cubs going to get in on this extension party?
Tim Dierkes
2:25
Baez and Hendricks make some sense, and perhaps Contreras.  However, especially with the first two, the price goes up with each passing year.  Plus you get into a problem where your luxury tax hit could go up, because the AAV of a new deal would be higher than the 2019 or 2020 one-year salary would have been.
are you my dad??

WHERE IS KIMBREL GOING!?!?!?!
Tim Dierkes
2:26
To your paternity question, I don't believe so.  I'll go with the Brewers for Kimbrel.

How does one pronounce your last name.  Is it deer kiss?
Tim Dierkes
2:27
Rhymes with "circus," as I told my eventual wife early on in our courtship.  I had the best pickup lines.

Straily to Baltimore?
Tim Dierkes
2:28
This is a 5.00 ERA guy.  The Orioles have those.  I don't see the point.

In the Nats.com mailbag, there was a question whether Bryce will get booed when he comes to town early April.  Wouldn't you expect him to get a huge ovation, at least the first AB?
Tim Dierkes
2:28
This is a good question for Jeff Todd, as I just don't know the nature of the fanbase enough.  I lean toward a 60/40 boo/cheer split.

What would a jack Flaherty extension look like right now?  I feel like the Cardinals would be smart to lock him up now
Tim Dierkes
2:29
This is where the magic happens if you're trying to determine a good extension offer.
2:30
We haven't seen an SP in Flaherty's service class get extended for a good five years.  I'd picture something in the 30-35 mil range.
Is it me or...

Love the website! How come you don’t have maybe a section on small market teams?
Tim Dierkes
2:31
I don't know that they need their own section.  I think we do a good job of giving every team play or at least not favoring teams.  It is true that more active teams get more love, and teams with more reporters get more coverage overall.

dropping duensing was a bad move true or false
Tim Dierkes
2:32
It was the right move, and I have a feeling they'll end up doing the same with Kintzler by July.
Trump Who?
2:33
What's with the political stuff on your articles comment section??? I thought this was a baseball site????
Tim Dierkes
2:33
I'm not sure what you mean.  We do try to remove political comments, but we aren't able to do so instantly.  Sometimes a political ad can seep in, I don't directly pick the ads one by one.

If Houston comes proper with a 165 millie over 5 years, should I stay?
Tim Dierkes
2:34
I don't see them offering that, but yes, he should take that if it's offered now.
Michael Scott
2:34
Braves have all this "financial flexibility" apparently so why not use some of that money to lock up younger players? (Acuna, Albies, Camargo, etc.)
Tim Dierkes
2:35
Locking up Acuna makes all the sense in the world, but we don't know what kind of tradeoff each party is willing to make.
Tim
2:35
With the Bregman extension bing done and having Verlander locked up for the next 3 years, Correa, Cole, and Springer are all coming due in the next few years. Of the three, how would you see them ranked as the most to least important/likely?
Tim Dierkes
2:36
Ranked by likelihood of retaining past their current amount of control: Correa, Springer, Cole

Who is the most likely team in your opinion, who are supposed to do good, that is destined for a rebuild?
Tim Dierkes
2:37
It's tough because how do you define "supposed to do good?"  Is an 83-84 win team supposed to do good?

If mookie gets to FA, where in the Harper/Machado/Trout line will his next contract be?
Tim Dierkes
2:39
You do have to wonder if Trout's $360MM deal kind of put an upper bound on all contracts for the next five years or so.  I'll peg Mookie between Trout and Harper, so 10/345.

Do you believe the player should strike with the next CBA? Seems like the Rookies and middle tier players have gotten the shaft while it only pays the few elite.
Tim Dierkes
2:40
I definitely don't want the players to strike.  It's good that the two sides are at least talking about some more minor issues.  The problem is that when the players want something that the owners refuse to do, going on strike is the only option they have.  I don't know if the players have the appetite for it.

I see the Cole discussions - BUT if not Houston - who do you think is going to pay him?  Maybe we should ask Dallas Keuchel ... who has the same agent!
Tim Dierkes
2:41
That's a question to be better answered around November, when I can assess each team's rotation and room below the luxury tax threshold.  There's no real comparison to Keuchel, Cole is much better.

5 years seems too light for a 28 yr old Cole.  Sale is a year older and just signed for 5 plus a vesting option.
Tim Dierkes
2:43
If Cole expects to be paid through age 35, that would mean a seven-year deal.  Darvish, Price, Scherzer, and Lester got paid through 36, Greinke through 37.
2:44
However, Chris Sale took a deal that takes him through 35, instead of going out and trying to have a big year and getting that sixth year.  Despite what I read on ESPN recently - basically that Sale was an overpay - he kind of accepted one fewer year than he should have expected with a healthy season.
Anyway, given the way the free agent market has frozen over, certainly it's possible Cole has to take a six-year deal even with a solid 2019.
