Fun matchup tonight, with Jake Arrieta making his first start at Wrigley since leaving the Cubs as a free agent in March 2018.  Better yet, he's facing the man the Cubs replaced him with, Yu Darvish.
Who pitches better tonight?

Jake Arrieta (51.2% | 347 votes)

Yu Darvish (16.8% | 114 votes)

Neither completes 5 innings (32% | 217 votes)

We just saw the Braves trade for bullpen help. Could Mychal Givens be on their radar?
Tim Dierkes
1:58
He should be - Givens would be the Braves' best reliever.  But with control through 2021, the Orioles have one of the better relief trade chips this summer.

Any moves the indians can make to make an AL Central push?
Tim Dierkes
2:00
They need offense at DH and anywhere in the outfield, though Jose Ramirez returning to form is probably the biggest improvement they'll make.
2:02
Guys like Puig, Castellanos, Edwin Encarnacion, Brandon Belt, Choo, Piscotty, Haniger, and Smoak are probably some of the better bats that could be had.  For some, their contracts are an impediment.  The best, Haniger, would come with a huge price tag if he's indeed available.

Do the Phillies need to make an addition to win the division or do you believe they will be able to hold the lead with the team they currently have?
Tim Dierkes
2:05
I don't have strong opinions on whether the Braves will overtake the Phillies in the division, but I think the Phillies will reach the playoffs one way or another.  Klentak was quite active last summer with Asdrubal, Wilson Ramos, Bour, Aaron Loup, Luis Avilan, and Joey Bats being acquired.  So I do think he will make additions.

What Royals players are most likely to get moved before the trade deadline?
Tim Dierkes
2:06
Homer Bailey, Boxberger, Diekman, Duffy, Kennedy, Peralta, Maldonado, Owings, Hamilton, and Soler are all fair game.
2:07
As to who might actually interest teams, maybe Diekman and Kennedy?  Obviously with salary relief for the latter.

Do you think if the Giants traded Bumgarner and Will Smith together they could get back a top 100 prospect?
Tim Dierkes
2:08
Absolutely.

How much trade value does Max Kepler have?  Hoping the Twins can move him with another minor leaguer to get a better Outfielder.
Tim Dierkes
2:10
The Twins have the second-best offense in baseball, and Kepler is at least a small part of that.  Plus, they just gave him a $35MM extension.  So I don't think RF is going to be changing.

If we’re this good with so many players hurt, what’s your prediction for our final regular season record?
Tim Dierkes
2:12
The Yanks are projected at FanGraphs at a 96 win team, which seems reasonable.  Nice to see Stanton getting close.

Do the Phils have too many young arms and too little experience to succeed?
Tim Dierkes
2:13
No, they have a pretty normal mix of youth and veteran and I think guys reaching the playoffs for the first time succeed plenty.

Thoughts on Giants cutting Altherr after one at bat?
Tim Dierkes
2:15
As I mentioned last week, the Giants don't seem to have much of a logical plan in their outfield.  Altherr seems as worthy of a look as Mac Williamson, and I don't really see the point of Kevin Pillar there.  Still, it's not like Altherr is great, and maybe they think they can sneak him through waivers.
Cubs bullpen
2:15
Hearing some rumours about the Cubs being interested in Ken Giles. He’s been great this year. Any fit there?
Tim Dierkes
2:16
Of course - Giles fits with any contender as one of the best RPs available this summer, plus he's controllable for 2020.

I know they said this off-season they didnt want to move him. But any chance Seattle moves Haniger this season?
Tim Dierkes
2:17
As the Mariners' playoff chances have dwindled, their chances of trading Haniger have increased.  My guess is that the Mariners will receive offers and Jerry Dipoto will seriously consider them.

Pablo Sandoval

Justice for Kung Fu Panda! Not Dave Justice. Best hitter on the team. He should start.
Tim Dierkes
2:19
Being the best hitter on the Giants is faint praise.  I think Sandoval is a league average hitter on a 86 PA hot streak, and running the 32-year-old out there regularly isn't an optimal use of playing time they can use to try to find a long-term piece.  That said, if the Giants want to play Panda over Longoria more to appease fans, then I don't see why not.  Now, if they trade Belt and Tyler Austin is still a bench guy, I disagree with that.

When do you think the blue jays continue/restart the fire sale.
Tim Dierkes
2:20
I'm sure the doors are already open, but generally speaking the best offers come in closer to the July 31st deadline.

On what planet is Piscotty available?
Tim Dierkes
2:22
Well, he's on a team with an 8% chance at the playoffs, and he's a solid but not amazing player on a team that's shown a willingness to move players with control left (he can be controlled through 2023).  For me it's more, why wouldn't the A's listen on Piscotty?

Josh Bell in the MVP conversation at the end of the year?
Tim Dierkes
2:25
Whether they admit it or not, these days baseball writers vote pretty well in tune with WAR rankings (as is my perception - I haven't looked super closely).  So the fact that Bellinger and Yelich play more demanding positions will work against Bell, and guys like DeJong, Baez, Bryant, Contreras, and Rendon could be in a better position too.  Still, fair to say Bell will stay in the MVP conversation!

When are the Astros gonna bring up that big bat Alvarez, hmm???
Tim Dierkes
2:26
I'll say he's up by June.  Not that the Astros need much of anything.

Hi Tim! I currently have a .385 OBP, lead my league in steals (with just 1CS) and play average CF defense. Why are ppl stupid thinking I'm a 4th OF? Thanks for the chat man
Tim Dierkes

Looks like Dyson has started fewer than half of his team's games, so I think it's his usage more than anything.
