War is as flawed as any stat.  For example  fangraghs ran the 2018 WAR for the Red Sox and NYY and found that the Sox should have won 97 gms and the NYY 104.  Quite a miss for the most cited stat.

I disagree that WAR is as flawed as any stat.  Like anything, this should be treated with nuance.  I tried to do that by walking through just one component of a hitter's WAR:

That series kind of died on the vine here at MLBTR because A) most of our readers were not interested and B) it was dependent on Dave Appelman answering a ton of questions from me for months on end, which is a lot to ask of him.

Though I only peeked under the hood a bit, I found WAR to be much more of an arbitrary (decided by one person in many aspects) black box (there's things only Appelman knows the answer to) than I thought it was.  It is not easily reproduced by a layman, not even close.  WAR is an acceptable approximation of a player's overall value and a fun way to compare hitters to pitchers, but yes, it's plenty flawed and perhaps more popular than it deserves to be without proper vetting.
Alright well with that bit of nerdiness, I have to conclude this chat.  Thanks for joining!
