Over the last few years, we've seen rentals who are pitching well land 45 grade prospects, for the most part.  I would think one 50 grade prospect would get it done for Will Smith.  The Cubs have plenty of those types.  Or, just Happ alone plus some long shot prospects.  That said, the Cubs have the example where they dealt a 60 grade prospect (Gleyber Torres) to rent Aroldis Chapman.  I think that sticks out due to its rarity.

My main concern with Will Smith is if MadBum draws him into some kind of scuffle with the Dodgers.  If he gets in one little fight and his mom gets scared...

Is Miguel Amaya + enough for the Cubs to get either Anthony Rendon, Will Smith, or Ken Giles?
Tim Dierkes
1:37
Giles or Smith, I think yes.  Rendon is different though.  All-Star everyday player.  The Nats kept Harper in this situation last year and tried to sign him.  I don't know if that experience makes a Rendon trade more or less likely, but I do think they'd have to be bowled over in a Rendon trade.

Realistic SP or Bullpen targets for Rays? They have 2 healthy starters and bullpen days 3/5 starts are unsustainable.

There's a list of likely available relievers.  Some make more sense than others, and some aren't pitching great.

Wouldn't it be rich of the Rays re-acquired Chris Archer?

What would the return be if the Cardinals decide to dangle Carpenter, Ozuna, J Martinez?
Tim Dierkes
1:42
I don't see any trade value in Carpenter, minimal in Martinez.  If we look at the J.D. Martinez trade in thinking about Ozuna, the Tigers got three 40-50 grade prospects.  Maybe they were going quantity over quality a bit, but I don't think your jaw would drop at whatever Ozuna brings back.

Does brad hand with 2+ years and so many people bidding bring back more than Chapman or miller did?
Tim Dierkes
1:45
I think the 55-60 grade prospects come into play for Hand.  You can see why the Padres were willing to throw in Adam Cimber with him, as it enabled to get a player of Francisco Mejia's caliber.  Generally such a player is not traded for a reliever.  The Yankees got a 60 (Clint Frazier) and a 55 (Justus Sheffield) for Miller in 2016, so they might have set the ceiling on that one.

Do you see Andrew Miller to the Twins for a lotto ticket or 2 or a good idea for them?
Tim Dierkes
1:46
I do, but aside from a few guys, most of the relievers acquired at the trade deadline are lotto tickets.  Look at Jesse Chavez last year...Cubs got him for nothing and he wound up as basically their top guy.

What is the future for Puig?
Tim Dierkes
1:48
I think the Reds will trade Puig in July with the sole goal of clearing as much of his salary as another team is willing to take.  There's no hope of a QO and he's built up no trade value, so it would be a team just willing to try a change of scenery and pay a few million for it.

Moncada is currently ranked 8th on the AL All-Star ballot for third basemen. Where do you rank Moncada among AL 3rd basemen?
Tim Dierkes
1:49
Has to be top 5.  I'd take Bregman and Chapman over Moncada, but Moncada might be third.

How much longer with the Rangers stick with Smyly?  It hurts to read the box scores every 5 days.
Tim Dierkes
1:51
I can't believe they've allowed him to make nine starts.  He's just been so terrible.  And I say this as someone who was throwing shade at the Cubs for being cheap and not retaining Smyly as a depth piece.  But yeah, time for a turn in the bullpen or a DFA.

If the White Sox sell again who would be on the block other than Colome? Right handed 1B never fetch much. Bummer is controlable and looks great, maybe Mccann?
Tim Dierkes
1:53
With Kelvin Herrera pitching poorly and Carlos Rodon and Nate Jones out for the season, they just don't have much to trade aside from the guys you named.

Madbum and will smith to Atlanta for what?!?  What would it take. I’m going with Wright. Allord. Ender. Duvall and demeritte. Feel like it’s a win for both teams
Tim Dierkes

Lot to unpack there but I think you're light.  If the Giants decide to package their two best trade chips, they have to do better than a package led by Kyle Wright.  And I think they could.

Terrible news and we join the outpouring of support for Big Papi.  The most recent reports I read is that he's going to be OK.

Serious question, would the Phils have any extra incentive to trade for Will Smith because of the connection?  Could there be a promo or something that would make him worth, say 5 or 10% more to the Phils than other teams (strictly for off-field reasons).  Like a Will Smith/Will Smith doing the Carlton-dance poster giveaway?
Tim Dierkes
1:58
Hmm.  Well, the opportunity for jokes and promos would indeed be amazing.  I don't know that such a thing would actually sell a significant number of tickets.  I also don't know Will Smith the pitcher well enough to know how game he is to sign up for jokes about his name at an even higher rate than he gets now.

Can Bauer fetch a 55 and a 50 prospect?  Keuchel signing with Atlanta seems to take them out of the running for the time being but is there anybody else close enough to a division title that is deep enough to offer that? Or is Bauer just not worth it?
Tim Dierkes
2:01
Generally, I think yes, a pitcher of Bauer's caliber with control for 2020 would be able to fetch that combo of prospects.  I would say almost any contender, except a few with completely full rotations like the Dodgers or Cubs, could put together such an offer.  The one wild card about Trevor Bauer is that he's rubbed people the wrong way on social media and some clubs could be concerned about how his unique personality would play out in their market.  Like, would Bauer work out on the Yankees?  I have no idea.

Will Madbum be in the same spot as Keuchel and Kimbrel were in this year come next year?
Tim Dierkes
2:03
MadBum's a year younger, and doesn't have the same pitch to contact profile as Keuchel, and won't come with a QO attached.  So unless he has a wildly incorrect idea of his market value, I don't think he'll be sitting out the 2020 season until June.

They don't have trade value, but if someone wants to take on a small fraction of their salaries, the White Sox should do that.
