Tim Dierkes
2:20
Welcome to my chat this week!  Sorry for starting a bit late.
MLB>NFL
2:21
What are the padres doing at the trade deadline?
Tim Dierkes
2:24
I think the pitching staff is the primary area of upgrade.  They will get Dinelson Lamet back soon which helps a bit.
Eddy Gregg Jr.
2:24
Who will be the next big-named prospect to be called up? Been a big fantasy year for the youth.
Tim Dierkes
2:25
Maybe Bo Bichette or Kyle Tucker?
Giantsfan24/7
2:25
Bumgarner's trade value gone up in last 2 starts. Can they get a top 50 prospect for him
Tim Dierkes
2:26
I think that's generally unlikely, just thinking about what the Rangers got for Yu Darvish a few years ago (a package led by Willie Calhoun).
James
2:26
If the Angels decide to be sellers at the deadline who could they look to move?
Tim Dierkes
2:29
They are in a tricky place at 4.5 out in the wild card.  This is a team with about a 3% shot at the playoffs.  You'
2:30
You'd have to look at Simmons, La Stella, Calhoun if anyone will  have him, and Tyler Skaggs
Brandon
2:30
Chances that Bauer gets moved at the deadline? Does it lower his value since he reportedly wants to only sign one year extensions?
Tim Dierkes
2:32
Barring a total collapse by the Indians, I think Bauer stays put.  I don't think his unique stance on contracts lowers his value - when you trade for a player who is under control through 2020, you mostly do not bake in some sort of expectation that you can keep him beyond that.

2:32
What position do Theo and I need to address the most heading into the trade deadline?
Tim Dierkes
2:34
Second base comes to mind, given the innings that have gone to Descalso and Russell.  Maybe it's as simple as making Bote the full-time starter at the position.
2:35
Bullpens can always be improved, but the Cubs already made their major move with Kimbrel.
Zac
2:35
Is Matt Boyd even worth the haul the Tigers are asking for?
Tim Dierkes
2:36
I think so - he has three years of control after this one, he's cheap now, and he's been very, very good aside from some issues with the longball.  They can justify asking for any prospect in baseball.
Chuck
2:37
The CF market seems barren.  Is there anyone of note available?
Tim Dierkes
2:38
It is barren.  Starling Marte could be the prize, but the Pirates are still hanging around and may not be inclined to move him given two years of control beyond this one.
Thad Levine
2:38
If I dangle Royce Lewis can I get a controllable ace?
Tim Dierkes
2:39
Certainly - if you dangle one of the top ten prospects in the game, you can get a controllable ace.  Not sure if you think Boyd is an ace though, he seems like the mostly likely guy.
JD
2:39
Would Mike Minor trade net Texas a top 50 prospect?
Tim Dierkes
2:41
If the season ended today, the Rangers would be in the playoffs in large part due to Minor.  But to answer your question, yes, I think you could snare one such prospect.

2:41
Is Lindor on the All-Star team over Gleyber Torres just because the game is in Cleveland? Lindor is great but he missed time, etc.
Tim Dierkes
2:43
Lindor was chosen by the players, and I doubt the game being in Cleveland was a major factor in that vote.  But as one of the game's best players for about five years, you can't go wrong putting him in the game.  Had he not been chosen, the correct choice would have been Xander Bogaerts, not Torres.
2:44
Still, we'll probably see about 10 additional players make the AS team between now and July 9th, so some of the snubs will be corrected.
Zac
2:44
Does MLBTR plan on covering gambling if MLB legalizes it? Or how will the approach it?
Tim Dierkes
2:45
It's not up to MLB to legalize it, but they've shown they're all-in once states start to do that.  As for us, the legality was not really keeping us away from covering it.  I'd say it's mostly not within our wheelhouse or niche - we've always been all about roster movement.
Addison Russell
2:46
Is there any point at which I should be worried about getting optioned/DFA'd? I'm certainly not a better option than David Bote and I'm probably a worse option than Robel Garcia too.
Tim Dierkes
2:47
He's certainly got a good chance of being optioned in the near future.  Should the Cubs cut ties entirely?  Sure, but that was true last fall and they didn't.

The Red Sox will trade Mookie Betts by the deadline. Fight me.
Tim Dierkes
2:49
Scuffling as they have been, they're more likely than not to make the playoffs.  Still, to your point, with Betts they only have one season of control beyond this one.  If Dombrowski sees an offer come in that he feels makes the Red Sox better right now, it's not impossible.

What do you think players want out of the upcoming CBA? Fans? Owners? Are there significant differences between what one of these groups would like to see any another?
Tim Dierkes
2:51
We'll take fans first - I think most MLB fans just don't want to see a work stoppage, and won't think much further about the CBA.  Owners probably want to maintain the status quo.  The players have to try to figure out what's next after free agency has become broken.  The owners have the upper hand this time around, and it's hard to see what leverage the players have.
Tigers
2:51
Matt Boyd to Padres for Wil Myers Luis Urias Michael Baez Logan Allen Josh Naylor and Buddy Reed. Who says no.
Tim Dierkes
2:54
I don't know if I can remember a trade where five 50-55 grade prospects were moved.  So I'm not sure the Padres would move such a huge chunk of their farm system.  I also think the Tigers will aim more for that one centerpiece player, like MacKenzie Gore.
Astros Fan
2:54
I saw today that the Astros are interested in Boyd and not willing to trade Tucker. What would a package look like with Tucker not included for Boyd?
Tim Dierkes
2:55
Maybe I'm the high man on Boyd, but I really think it would have to include Tucker.
Farhan
2:55
In light of MadBum's last two starts which were excellent, what do you foresee as my return on this trade? Could I swipe a 55 grade prospect?
Tim Dierkes
2:55
Yes, that's what Willie Calhoun was.  And most contenders have a 55 grade prospect.
