Once a ticket is in collections, it's under the authority of the Centralized Collections Unit.

Can a ticket be taken out of collections by the DMV?
DC DMV Communications

The Notice of Unsatisfied Ticket is triggered after day 31 of receiving the violation.

At what stage of number of day does the DMV send out the Unsatisfied Ticket?
DC DMV Communications

The first notice is the ticket itself, followed by a Notice of Unsatisfied Ticket.  Once sent to the Centralized Collection Unit (CCU), they also send out notices.  You will need to contact CCU for their timelines.

How many notices are sent out at each stage?

Hello.  Thank you for your question.  However, on both the ticket and the mailed notice, individuals are referred to the website for more information that can't be printed on the back of the ticket given the size and space available.

I reviewed the ticket process timeline by day. This information should be clearly printed on the back of the ticket in a legible format. What are the documented steps in the process to ensure customers are notified before a ticket moves to the next stage, including collections. How many notices are sent out at each stage?

Hello.  You may email the DMV Human Resource Team at dmv.humanresources@dc.gov for an update.

I applied for a job at the DMV Inspection station. But never heard back. Is that normal, or do you guys usually send a message notifying about the application status. It’s been more than a month. Thank you!

In addition to the mailed notices, an individual should use the ticket alert service as the safeguard.

If a person does not have the alert system, what other safeguards are in place to ensure they are notified? How would they know that their ticket has been or will be sent to collections?

Hello.  The DMV does not have the authority to enter anyone into a ticket payment plan.  You would have to contact the Centralized Collection Unit (CCU) to determine your eligibility.  Here is the contact information:   CCU Contact information: (202) 727-0771 | CCU.help@dc.gov | https://bit.ly/3BCoJWR

Hi my car was impounded. I just moved to DC and I can’t pay off the tickets right now but I need a car. Is there a way to get on a payment plan so that the next car I get doesn’t get impounded?

Thank you for your question.  First, a ticket has a natural lifecycle as outlined in a previous reply.  Finally, as a safeguard, the DMV recommends individuals signup for the Ticket Alert Service.

How is a person expected to know that a ticket is progressing to collections if they never received a notice or hearing record? Are there additional safeguards or notification methods in place to help prevent this from happening if you do not have a the alert?

Thank you for your suggestion.  However, the DMV has completed a number of public awareness campaigns to include articles in our monthly newsletter and other public facing documents.  I will take your recommendation and consider how we might expand our reach.  Refer to the following link for the a list of notifications offered.  https://dmv.dc.gov/service/registration-ticket-alert-service-tas

Have you considered to including the information about the ticket alert service with vehicle registration and renewal materials? Many people may not be aware that this service exists, and including it in registration or renewal information could increase awareness and help customers avoid missed notices.
Additionally, does the ticket alert service provide updates beyond the initial citation, such as hearing dates, hearing decisions, or other case status information?
DC DMV Communications

It depends on the type of ticket received.  Refer to the ticket timeline for the details related to each ticket type.  https://dmv.dc.gov/page/understanding-ticket-timeline

Hello.  Thank you for your question.  The DMV makes every attempt to send notices.  However, we do provide the Ticket Alert Service (TAS) that allows individuals to receive notices for tickets via email and text message,  https://dmv.dc.gov/service/registration-ticket-alert-service-tas

  1. Hi Gabriel. I often hear from other people who say they never received their ticket or hearing notices for a decision. In many cases, this appears to be a legitimate concern. Has the DMV considered using email or text message notifications, when a customer's email address or phone number is available, as an additional way to help ensure they receive important notices?

I'm now ready to take your questions related to any DMV service and activity. If you have a question not related to DMV, I'll try my best to redirect you to the appropriate agency. Also, I may not be able to answer specific questions publicly which requires research related to your Personally Identifiable Information (PII) during our one hour together. Therefore, if your question is specific to your driver license, a ticket, etc., I may request you submit it to our team here https://bit.ly/38WfT86 with more detail.

Good afternoon and welcome to today’s online chat with DMV’s Director, Gabriel Robinson.
Today, we’ll discuss your various DMV questions related to driver licenses and identification cards; vehicle inspections, titles and registrations; and the adjudication of photo, parking and moving violations.
We have over 55 online services (http://dmv.dc.gov/page/online-services) and multiple facilities which provide in-person service to 2,800-3,300 daily customers. Regarding tickets, we have two main sister agencies: DDOT which regulates parking (i.e., signage, meters and parking permits), DPW/DDOT which issues parking tickets, and MPD who issues photo enforcement tickets along with 30 plus other entities in the District.
