Hello, there is no online service to transfer or convert a license to DC.  You must visit one of our four service centers for this service.

Is there an online service to transfer driver license to DC, or does my husband need to go in person?

I have a question about photo tickets adjunction. I need to register my car in DC, but the tickets are so expensive I cannot afford to pay them off and finally register my car. Is there a way to waive these tickets?
DC Dept of Motor Vehicles

Yes, there is a hybrid option to title and register your vehicle using our online-mail option.  "Private Sale Vehicle Registration".  https://dmv.dc.gov/service/dmv-online-services-0

Hello, is there any easier way to transfer my tags to DC? I know I need to get my car inspected first, but once I do this can I register my car online?

I'm sorry that you feel that way.  However, I do take all suggestions under consideration and have accepted and implemented ideas from the public.  However, there are times that I as the SME must disagree with a suggestion when I have more context and information.

Thanks for those details but I was in the car and that did not happen. The man was using multiple computers to speed the process along and scanned my car at one computer before ran to the other car that was connected to a different car. Director Robinson, I love that you are chatting with the public but are there examples that you have listened to the public and said potentially that something is a good idea or upgrade that you will take to your team to look at? So far, each DC resident in the chat has been given the reply that their idea or question isn't what the DC DMV is doing and two people were told their idea is invalid and not happening.

No.  There is no website you can visit for updates.  The DC DMV is excited about the potential options and will keep the public aware of major developments.

I like that digital IDs are in the process of happening. Is there a website that shows the work that is happening or the project timeline for the public to stay informed?

The physical verification by a government employee is the part that was different.  An employee verified your VIN, ensured the make and model matched, ensured the OBD connector was plugged into the correct vehicle, etc.  After the government employee creates the base record at the Inspection Station, that record and information is used as the benchmark for all other future inspections; including those at the self-service kiosk.

The employee did nothing different than I would at the self-serve. Can you explain where in my journey to the station I experienced something different?  When in my process did someone physically verify anything on my car?  Also, Is there data available on how many cars are inspected for the first time after purchasing new vs how long people keep their new car purchases and have to return to the inspection stations for the district?

There are no plans to have other physical locations for ticket payments.  However, you can pay online, through the DCDMV mobile app, with any transaction you need to complete at any DMV, and through the mail.  Use the following link for more information:  https://dmv.dc.gov/service/pay-tickets

Other than L'nfant Plaza, do you plan to have it at other locations to physically pay for tickets?

Hello, the DC DMV is in talks with all vendors that would enable us to use/issue digital credentials.  In DC the law was passed in December of 2021 (seven months ago) that gives the DMV the ability to move this project forward.  DC DMV will implement when we are sure the program is complete and we have confidence we can keep your identity secure.  Stay Tuned!

Hello!  I would like to ask drivers licenses in Apple Wallet.  I was excited to see that the law was enacted and that the DMV said at the time that it was ready to implement it.  Is there any news now on what that means and when?  I don't like that Maryland and Arizona are beating us on this innovation.  Thanks so much!

Hello, thanks for the question.  However it is industry standard for the first inspection to be completed by a government employee.  This ensures the first reading of the vehicles information is physically verified by the government as well as electronically verified using the OBD reading.  There is no plans to change this process.

Hi! I'd like to talk about vehicle inspections. Primarily, I would like to understand why new vehicles that were purchased from a dealer and have come up for the first inspection in DC must use an inspection station and not allowed to use the self-service machine. I went to the inspection station and the two employees that worked with my vehicles performed the same exact steps I could have performed at the self-service inspection machine. When can that be changed?

I'm now ready to take your questions related to any DMV service and activity. If you have a question not related to DMV, I'll try my best to redirect you to the appropriate agency.  Also, I may not be able to answer specific questions which require research related to DMV issues since I only have an hour to chat. Therefore, if your question is specific to your driver license, a ticket, etc, I may request you submit it to us by email (dmv@dc.gov) or service request (http://311.dc.gov).

Good afternoon and welcome to today’s online chat with me, Gabriel Robinson, DMV Director. Today, we’ll discuss your various DMV issues related to driver licenses and identification cards; vehicle inspections, titles and registrations; and the adjudication of photo, parking and moving violations. We have over 55 online services (http://dmv.dc.gov/page/online-services) and seven facilities which provide in-person service to 2,800-3,300 daily customers. In regards to tickets, we have two main sister agencies: DDOT which regulates parking (i.e., signage, meters and parking permits) and DPW/DDOT which issues parking tickets, along with 30 plus other entities in the District. Also, MPD issues photo enforcement tickets.
