Thank you! That's what I thought but wanted to check.

Learner permits are not renewable.  You must take the knowledge exam again and start the process over.

Hi, if my learners permit expired a few days ago, I need to retake the knowledge test and pay for a new permit correct? There's no way to just renew the one I had?

You can cancel the tag online which would kill the registration. You can then dispose of the tags yourself such that they cannot be used by anyone again.  You could also choose to mail the tags back to the DMV after you complete your cancellation online.  There is no temporary tag option for this matter.

Thank you for the information about our registration. I hadn't even thought about "surrendering our tags." Does this have to be the absolute last thing we do as we put our car on a truck for shipping? Or is there a way to do this a few days before our move and get something temporary so that we don't get a ticket?

Unfortunately, we only offer vehicle registrations for one or two years.  However, when you surrender the tags, you would be eligible for a six month refund.

Hello. My car registration renewal is due in late August. However, we are moving out of the country on October 4th. Is there anyway to avoid paying the full one-year renewal fee (plus parking permit) since we only need our registration for one more month?

Hello.  There is a late fee for paying a ticket after 30 days.  There is no legal way to remove it because of travel.

Hello, I am traveling and missed to pay my $150 fine on 7/31/2024. Today there is a late fine added to it. Is it possible to please remove that?

I'm now ready to take your questions related to any DMV service and activity. If you have a question not related to DMV, I'll try my best to redirect you to the appropriate agency.  Also, I may not be able to answer specific questions which require research related to DMV issues since I only have an hour to chat. Therefore, if your question is specific to your driver license, a ticket, etc, I may request you submit it to us by email (dmv@dc.gov) or service request (http://311.dc.gov).

Good afternoon and welcome to today’s online chat with me, Gabriel Robinson, DMV Director. Today, we’ll discuss your various DMV issues related to driver licenses and identification cards; vehicle inspections, titles and registrations; and the adjudication of photo, parking and moving violations. We have over 55 online services (http://dmv.dc.gov/page/online-services) and seven facilities which provide in-person service to 2,800-3,300 daily customers. In regard to tickets, we have two main sister agencies: DDOT which regulates parking (i.e., signage, meters and parking permits) and DPW/DDOT which issues parking tickets, along with 30 plus other entities in the District. Also, MPD issues photo enforcement tickets.

Good morning, please submit your questions now. The chat session begins at 12PM (NOON) EST.
