DC DMV has extended the expiration of all DC DMV documents, vehicle registrations, inspection, ticket payments, etc. until 45 days after the public health emergency ends. All documents expiring after March 1, 2020 currently remain valid.

Hi there! I have a Driver's License from Ohio that expired 4/23/20 and I recently moved to DC and am trying to get a new DL. Has Covid changed any policies on expired licenses or will I need to retake the Knowledge and Road tests because it's over 90 days expired?

Hi. You would not be able to drive legally in DC using an international driver license. Please proceed with your fall appointment to obtain the necessary credential.

Good afternoon,
I hope that you are keeping well during this challenging time.
I would be grateful if you could confirm whether I can drive legally in the US using a valid international driver license (UK) through the duration of the public health emergency.
I understand that ordinarily you must get a DC DMV driver license if you reside in the District for more than 30 days and are not on a visitor’s visa.
I have an appointment in the fall but want to check I can drive legally using my UK driver license until obtaining a driver license from DC DMV.
Many thanks for your help.
Hannah

Also, I may not be able to answer specific questions which require research related to DMV issues since I only have an hour to chat. Therefore, if your question is specific to your driver license, a ticket, etc, I may request you submit it to us by email (dmv@dc.gov) or service request (http://311.dc.gov).

Good afternoon and welcome to today’s online chat with me, Jamie Miller, Public Information Officer with DC Department of Motor Vehicles. Today, we’ll discuss your various DMV issues related to driver licenses and identification cards; vehicle inspections, titles and registrations; and the adjudication of photo, parking and moving violations. We have over 55 online services (http://dmv.dc.gov/page/online-services) and seven facilities which provide in-person service to 2,800-3,300 daily customers. In regards to tickets, we have two main sister agencies: DDOT which regulates parking (i.e., signage, meters and parking permits) and DPW/DDOT which issues parking tickets, along with 30 plus other entities in the District. Also, MPD issues photo enforcement tickets.

I'm now ready to take your questions related to any DMV service and activity. If you have a question not related to DMV, I'll try my best to redirect you to the appropriate agency.
