All DC DMV documents expiring on/after March 1, 2020 have been extended 45 days beyond the end the current public health emergency. The health emergency was recently extended through March 31, 2021. Your license will remain valid through at least mid-May 2021

Hello, my license expires next month on the 5th but my appointment is the next day on the 6th. Will I be penalized if it's a one day difference? Can I still drive to the DMV day of appointment?

The dealer can provide you with new temporary tags if your current tags are about to expire.

Thank you and unfortunately, that would exclude me if I don't get my license renewed by May 2021. <END>

If we continue to be unable to obtain an appointment and our temporary dealer tag expires, what can we do to make sure we are not penalized? <END>

Lisa. The TSA is currently accepting state driver licenses that have been expired for up to a year. I would encourage you to check their website for more information.

As noted previously, additional appointments are uploaded to our online appointment scheduler on Tuesday's at 3 p.m. Appointments are in high demand. We appreciate everyone’s patience during the current health emergency as DC DMV remains focused on keeping our customers and employees safe.

Great and thanks for that additional information. Just 1 more question. What does one do if the pandemic continues, your offices do not open to the general public w/o an appointment and those seeking appointments aren't able to get one. I ask because if someone opts to travel later in the year and they haven't renewed their license, they won't be allowed access to a plane because of an expired license. Suggestions? <END>

Good afternoon, I have been trying for 5 weeks to get a New Resident appt. Every Tuesday I log on and 3pm but the site keeps freezing and I am never able to find an appt (tried multiple locations). I just moved here from overseas. How am I supposed to get an appt? <END>

Thank you for responding. I received a 45 day extension when I left on 12/24/20 and I appreciate you sharing that additional appointments are added on most Tuesday's at 3. Can you share if we're able to one of those appointments, if it's required to attend the same day. I, like many others, am working from home and don't have the luxury of jumping up and running to the DMV <END>

Hello, I have been having difficulty getting an appointment. When online and selecting "First Available Appointment," there appears to not be any available time through 2021. How can we get an appointment for a new vehicle registration? <END>

Is it possible to confirm that my question was received. END

Hello, I have been trying to make an appointment to return to the DMV to get my drivers license renewed and there is nothing available. I went on 12/24 to the Georgetown location with all the documents I thought I needed, only to be told that I'd also have to present a copy of my marriage license or divorce decree because my last name has changed from my birth certificate. When I conveyed to the DMV associate that I was having difficulty getting that appointment and that it took me 2 months to get it, he told me that it shouldn't be a problem because the system is being revamped. Unfortunately, it has not been and effective May 2021 my license will have expired for a year. END

Good afternoon and welcome to today’s online chat with me, Jamie Miller, Public Information Officer with DC Department of Motor Vehicles. Today, we’ll discuss your various DMV issues related to driver licenses and identification cards; vehicle inspections, titles and registrations; and the adjudication of photo, parking and moving violations. We have over 55 online services (http://dmv.dc.gov/page/online-services) and seven facilities which provide in-person service to 2,800-3,300 daily customers. In regards to tickets, we have two main sister agencies: DDOT which regulates parking (i.e., signage, meters and parking permits) and DPW/DDOT which issues parking tickets, along with 30 plus other entities in the District. Also, MPD issues photo enforcement tickets.

I'm now ready to take your questions related to any DMV service and activity. if your question is specific to your driver license, a ticket, etc, I may request you submit it to us by email (dmv@dc.gov) or service request (http://311.dc.gov).
