DC DMV Credential Extension Information
In accordance with applicable laws and the current Mayor’s Order, all DC DMV documents with an expiration date on or after March 1 will remain valid until 45 days after the coronavirus (COVID-19) public health emergency concludes. Eligible documents include driver licenses, identification cards, vehicle registrations, inspections, ticket payments and ticket adjudication responses. Under DC law, your license, registration and inspection are still valid.
All driver licenses, vehicle registrations, and vehicle inspections scheduled to expire have been granted a waiver without penalty until DC DMV reopens at full operating capacity. Customers are encouraged to use online options by visiting dmv.dc.gov. DC DMV has more than 55 online services enabling customers to “skip the in-person trip.”
When travelling to other states/jurisdictions, it is recommended that you print and carry the following memo: DC DMV Credential Extension Update

Due to the public health emergency, there are no walk-in appointments.  DMV will release additional appointments on Tuesday at 3pm.  Be sure to set a timer for 3:01pm on this coming Tuesday to ensure you are online before the additional slots are booked.  Also, please take a look at the 55+ online transactions that are available at dmv.dc.gov.  You may not need to come to the DMV for an in-person service.

The appointments are booked through March 31, 2021.  It should be noted, as of today, the public health emergency is scheduled to end on March 17, 2021; unless it's extended again.  However, I will take your advise under consideration.

Can you indicate - online - how far out in the future you are booked up? Your system is opaque on this so when one tries  to get an appointment we don't know if they're for the current week or 3+months out and one has to go week by week to try only to get the same message of no appointments available. It would be great if you could make the availability - and how many appointments you are releasing each tuesday (like the mayor does daily with the covid vaccination inf) - much more transparency would be great

DMV released a new transaction that will allow you to complete your transaction through a hybrid transaction (mail/online).  It is available for use today.  https://dmv.dc.gov/node/1519106.  Also DMV will continue to release more in-person appointments online each Tuesday at 3pm if you would like to come in-person.

We purchased this vehicle and want to put it to work, but can't because of the delay in getting registration and tags. It's hard to get an appointment online. Do you have any suggestions or remedies?

The DMV continues to release additional appointments at 3pm each Tuesday. Please try setting a timer for 3:01pm this Tuesday and I am confident you will get an appointment.  It's my advise that you use the online appointment system instead of calling 311.  Keep in mind, all credentials have been extended beyond their expiration date until 45 days after the public health emergency.  See the link below.  That way you have additional time while you wait for your appointment.   https://dmv.dc.gov/sites/default/files/dc/sites/dmv/publication/attach...

Hello, I tried last night for 50 minutes to get an appt. and was unable to.  Why is it so difficult to get an appt.  Have you ever gone on the DMV site.  You should try it.  It says within 30 days only but no appts and no way to even put in a date.  Thank you.

Thanks for the question.  The DMV continues to release additional appointments at 3pm each Tuesday.  If you try at 2:45pm, the appointments will not be available.  Please try setting a timer for 3:01pm this Tuesday and I am confident you will get an appointment.  It's my advise that you use the online appointment system instead of calling 311.  Also, keep in mind, all temp tags will remain valid even after their expiration date as you wait for your appointment.

Thank you for your time. I’ve tried and tried and tried but it’s been impossible to get an appointment. I am a new resident, and have recently purchased a car from Ohio with temporary tags. These tags are expiring, but I am unable to get tags from DC -- or a license -- because there are no appointments available.  I’m unable to get the Ohio dealership to get me more temporary tags. What can I do? What do you suggest I do if I get pulled over either in DC or in another state when the tags have expired?
(I’ve gone online at 2:45PM every Tuesday and click and click but never any appointments. I’ve also called 311 and the same thing.)

SERVICE ALERT

On Tuesday, January 26, 2021, DC DMV opened our new Deanwood Road Test/CDL Center located in Ward 7 at 1421 Kenilworth Avenue, NE. The new Deanwood Center replaced the agency’s Brentwood Road Test/CDL Services Office, which closed on January 23, 2021.
I'm now ready to take your questions related to any DMV service and activity. If you have a question not related to DMV, I'll try my best to redirect you to the appropriate agency.  Also, I may not be able to answer specific questions which require research related to DMV issues since I only have an hour to chat. Therefore, if your question is specific to your driver license, a ticket, etc, I may request you submit it to us by email (dmv@dc.gov) or service request (http://311.dc.gov).

Good afternoon and welcome to today’s online chat with me, Gabriel Robinson, DMV Director. Today, we’ll discuss your various DMV issues related to driver licenses and identification cards; vehicle inspections, titles and registrations; and the adjudication of photo, parking and moving violations. We have over 55 online services (http://dmv.dc.gov/page/online-services) and seven facilities which provide in-person service to 2,800-3,300 daily customers. In regards to tickets, we have two main sister agencies: DDOT which regulates parking (i.e., signage, meters and parking permits) and DPW/DDOT which issues parking tickets, along with 30 plus other entities in the District. Also, MPD issues photo enforcement tickets.
