Good Monday! First time we can say "Opening Day is next week!" Lots to get to here ... quick reminder that context matters, so be brief but specific as possible when asking Qs; will enhance the likelihood I can get to em. Let's go!

Brent, thanks for making my Mondays a little easier!

What are your thoughts on Yohan Moncada as a keeper league target? After a stellar 2019 season, the 2020 season was rough. With recency bias a powerful variable, he may be available for a bargain. Does Moncada still have a star ceiling?
Brent Hershey
12:04
Here to help! Tentative 'yes' that Moncada still has a star ceiling; he's one that I look skeptically on re: 2020 b/c of contracting COVID. Still young and def a different type of future (more power, less SB) than I thought several years ago, but if you're able to get him cheaply, could pay off for several years.

How about a little closer talk?! How would you rank Graterol, Martin, Soto, and Romano for this season? Got a preference for one guy over the long-term?

Love your column,

Bud

This season factoring in skills and potential opportunity, I'd go Martin/Romano/Graterol/Soto. Long-term, give me Romano slightly over Graterol; right now the other two are non-factors past this year for me.

Brent, I need a sanity check. Am I crazy for thinking that Clint Frazier could be an absolute stud this year? Don’t worry, I can handle it.
Brent Hershey
12:09
Absolute stud? Possible I guess, but wouldn't bank too much on it. Like Clint overall; good gains last year's small sample, at a good age for growth but still strikes out a ton. Not a target for me, but someone I'll consider at his current cost.

Quick question about Dylan Carlson: How good will this kid be?  He seems to be a little undervalued at the moment, even in keeper leagues. Is now the time to strike, before it’s too late?
Brent Hershey
12:12
Think he can be very good; but not sure there's superstar tools here. Still, he IS the type of player I'd closely look at in keeper leagues; the MLB experience in 2020 was positive, esp the bounce back after failure. Has a developed broad base of skills that can contribute now but also give some hope for the future. Obv a full time around the league will tell us more.

NL 5x5 11 team -- I have and can keep Lindblom at $2 and Morejean at $1 - do I want to keep them? I think Yes to Linblom but I'm iffy on Morejean - thoughts?
Brent Hershey
12:15
If one or the other, agreed that it should be Lindbloom. Morejón depends on if you have keeper room, as well as some sense on what your waiver wire usually looks like. With a bunch of reserve spots and not much in the pool, then might lean into keeping AM. Otherwise, maybe he's no better than what you can find via FAAB? Like him overall, but not sure he has command yet to productively start in MLB.

12:17
Who do you perceive as the biggest bust relative to his ADP or auction price - hitter and pitcher?
Brent Hershey
12:17
It's downballot, but I don't get the love for Chris Bassit. And I'll still have questions about Luis Robert's ceiling until I see him adjust to MLB pitching. Doubt that he'll be rostered on any of my one-year teams this season due to his inflated price.

Which two of four should I keep - Enrique Hernandez, C. Taylor, E. Pagan, and F. Peralta?
Brent Hershey
12:19
Impossible to say w/o context, but frees me up to say whatever. :-) So .... Pagan and Enrique

Picked off rebuilding clubs, are these rookie gambles -- added to my mixed 5x5 reserve, Trammell (SEA) and Baddoo (DET), going to be in the Majors on Opening Day? Should anything be expected of them, like playing time? Or, are they just placeholders until I can sort out my reserve pitching options?
Brent Hershey
12:21
Think both of these are trending upwards as far as OD rosters. Baddoo especially, given DET's situation. Also feel like IF they both make it, they will get initial time. And if they don't -- and/or if they fail and get sent back out a month in -- they are easy cuts IMO.

Akil Baddoo...lightening striking at the right moment to create a nice spring training feel-good story...or are we seeing some skills growth that can sustain rather than fizzle out once the season starts (like most prior feel good stories)?
Brent Hershey
12:25
More on Akil ... again, could see this working given DET's situation (searching for talent at this point). Could get rough once we get into the season ... but it's not been just a one-week thing with him so far, either. In the right situation (late in draft; easy replacement cost), I could see giving him a shot on your roster. Sometimes they do stick.

Will Nico Hoerner be entrenched and hitting near the top of the order by the end of 2021?
Brent Hershey
12:27
Entrenched? Yes. Top of the order? Think that's less likely unless Cubs are in mid-season tear-down mode.

Can only keep 7 so I have to cut 4 of these guysGeraldo Perdomo, Brennen Davis, Nolan Gorman, Brandon Marsh, Heliot Ramos, Marco Luciano, Austin Martin, Emerson Hancock, Grayson Rodriguez, Nick Lodolo, Braylen Marquez
Brent Hershey
12:30
Must be dynasty, which is how I'm answering here. Cut Hancock, Lodolo, Marquez and .... Perdomo or Marsh I guess. Marsh more likely to give you something this year, but I always give some pref to up-the-middle prospects. I'd prob make Marsh that last cut. Feel most comfortable with Grayson as a long-term impact starter out of the pitchers.

AL only fantasy league in our reserve round you can pick NLers hoping they come over. Let's say YOU get a top pick. ($6) The gamble of Trevor Story? Or current AL pitcher Luis Patino?
Brent Hershey
12:33
Patino, easily. Would be very averse playing that guess-the-NLer game if reserve spot are at all at a premium. Just can't think you'd be successful enough on that to take the risk.

5x5 Al Only $260 keeper league 29% inflation...Who do you keep at the last spot:  Fraizer $7, T.Hernandez $10, Ohtani $16, Clase $5.  Pitching is at a premium.  Ohtani can be moved back and forth but not easily and starts the year as DH only roster wise. Thank you.
Brent Hershey
12:36
Think I'd keep Clase. Cheapest, has some K value even if not the closer. Frazier a close 2d I'd think at that price.

My league is introducing some P spots, in addition to SP/RP, to accommodate the use of high-skilled middle relievers. It's shallow - 10 teams 5x5 with Sv+Hd. How many relievers of this ilk are appropriate for a 26/28-man roster? I was thinking three or four. Thanks!
Brent Hershey
12:42
Not clear whether you're asking for your own team (how to allocate the slots), or for how the league should set it up. For your team, I'd think 3-4 is on the high end given the shallowness of the pool For the league, those requirements could work. I mean, everyone has to play by the same rules, and it could mess w/ traditional valuation #s ... but again, that affects everyone. Would seem like you have the player pool availability to make it work.

Hi, Brent -

Xavier Edwards. How good can he be? When will we see him in the MLB? And should we be sneaking him onto our roster now?

Thanks!
Brent Hershey
12:46
Not super high on Edwards -- we have him #78 in our HQ100 -- but does have top-shelf speed of course. Thing that gives me a bit of pause is the org he's in -- for one, they take their time w/ most guys and mix/match at the MLB level. And two, Wander and Brujan are ahead of him on the org depth chart. If he or Brujan gets moved to OF, then I'm less worried about this. Don't get me wrong-- very good prospect -- but he's a couple years away and there are some role questions for me.

AL only 5x5 $260 keeper...how would you rank the following rookie pitchers for draft order:  G. Rodriguez, Patino, Lynch, Gilbert, Lacy.  Thank you.
Brent Hershey
12:50
Referencing my personal top 100 from the offseason, I have each of these in my Top 50 overall. Patino/Rodriguez/Lacy at 25/26/27 (so, take your pick), then Lynch and Gilbert a bit further down. Very close quintet for sure.

I know we shouldn't pay attention to spring training stats, but with that caveat out of the way, has anyone jumped onto your draft radar the last few weeks? Two that come to my mind are Joey Gallo and Ketel Marte, both of whom I was hesitant to roster.
Brent Hershey
12:52
Those two for sure. Jarred Kelenic sure looks ready, but the rookie caveat. And I must admit (hangs head) I'm giving more consideration to Carlos Rodón, too -- though shoulder injuries traditionally scare me away.

Hi Brent.  I'm picking third in a 12-team 5X5 H2H league with OBP instead of AVG.  I expect to pick Trout, Soto or Betts in the first round.  With the 21st, 27th, and 41st picks, I hope to get Rendon, Bogaerts/Bregman, and Springer.  Which order should I pick them in to maximize the chances that I'll get three of the four?  Thanks!
Brent Hershey
12:56
Think I'd wait on the Bogaerts/Bregman duo, thinking X's injury and Bregman's off year might scare some off. Seems they both have the best chance of falling to you at 41 -- though both obv have better OBP history than Springer. I'd def snag Rendon at 21 and then play it from there. Good luck!

I am in a 12-team AL-only keeper league with very high projected inflation (40-45%). In general, I am wondering how this level of inflation changes your overall drafting philosophy and approach, if at all.  Thanks.
Brent Hershey
1:00
Really league dependent -- whether or how much the group accounts for it. I find it affecting my keeper lists -- more apt to keep high-priced producers in those cases. In draft, either having software/values that accurately reflect that much inflation, or strictly adhering to a budget. And then being willing to throw it all out if the room surprises you. Flexibility.

Hey Brent - How would you rank these 4 young OF's for 2021 only and the next 3 years in an NL-only league with OBA - Pache, Reynolds, Robles, and Tapia.  Thanks!
