Happy Opening weekend... apologies, we were a bit late in getting this chat opened up to questions this morning, but sure looks like a bunch of you found your way here in time. Let's get going....

12 team mixed roto standard categories. Who has the best chance at a good steaming season? Clay Holmes Braxton Ashcraft Mike Soroka. Thanks
Ray Murphy
12:04
I like streamers who have some (at least initial) parameters for when you'd use them. Ashcraft meets that because his home park is good. And not to overreact to yesterday, but the PIT lineup isn't the nine-man collection of noodle bats it used to be. I think he'd be my first choice here.

hi Ray, thank you for taking my question. What surprised you the most on opening day in bullpen use? BHQ projections are not kind to Stanek. Could he be the guy for STL?
Ray Murphy
12:08
I tend to think there won't be "a guy" in STL. Stanek could have a share of it, sure. As we saw yesterday, his control will get in his way from time to time, so that's a concern. I also don't want to read too much into it because they had a big comeback there in the 6th, Marmol might have been in "lets get our guys some work" mode, and then 20 minutes later had to pivot to "hey look, we're protecting a lead in the 7th".

Hi Ray, Beeter entered in the 8th yesterday with 4 points lead. Henry seemed to be the choice for a possible save in the ninth. Any comments? Thank you for these chats
Ray Murphy
12:10
Could have meant that Henry would have had the 9th, sure. Also concerning were the two walks from Beeter. Those won't get him any closer to the 9th. Won't be many save opps in DC, either. Tough place to fish, for all of the above reasons.

Hi Ray,I would like to know what your thoughts are on Blake Snell. How serious is his injury. How long on the DL.Also do you think it is worth keeping him and losing about 2 months stats or should I drop him and pickup another pitcher?
Ray Murphy
12:11
I was a bit surprised this week to see that the timeline is in fact two months. If you don't have IL spots, two months is probably longer than I'm willing to carry anyone on my bench. If your team gets through April healthy, FAAB him back when he's more like 4 weeks away if you have a spot to play with.

What a start to the season!! So… I have McGonigle Pena Adames and Ozuna for 3 active sports. 16 team mixed w obp. Trade one or hold one in reserves what does your crystal ball say…. Who plays 2b have Castro  and Rengifo, bazanna in oneof 3 minors slots have an open minors what are changes for Emmanuel Rodriguez to make impact this season as targeting in FAAB Sunday. Could also target Bryce Mathews and drop JoJo Romero if we think he will get the PT in Houston. Thanks as always my friend!
Ray Murphy
12:13
Lots of good names here. I'd hold on to them, it's a long season and depth comes in handy. Same with Castro/Rengifo... no need to decide that now.

Rodriguez... I think I've seen you ask about him in forums, comments, etc. I've seen our minors guys say he's more of a second half play. Keep an eye on what kind of start he gets off to in the minors, but in general based on your enthusiasm level, you probably need to pump the brakes a bit.

hi Ray, how did Murakami looked yesterday? Are you more or less optimistic following yesterday and WBC? Batting lefty, do you think he is going to be platooned or will the manager will give him the opportunity to play full time? How would you rank Murakami, Soler, O’Hearn, JH Lee for playing time on active lineup or would you be deciding on a weekly basis?
Ray Murphy
12:14
I barely got eyes on that game, definitely didn't see an MM at-bat. I'd favor him over everyone else you mentioned, though, at least until we get more info from him.

Is Jake Bauers a full time player at least in the short term? Has he made changes that are fueling his improvement?
Ray Murphy
12:16
Funny, I've got him on a sim dynasty team, honestly not a cornerstone or anything but he's a helpful piece, especially in formats that favor OBP. And yeah, seems like there might be some age 30+ skills consolidation going on here too. He should play a lot while Chourio is out, and wouldn't be surprised if he finds something like half-time work even beyond that.

NL only obp league Auction draft coming up.  I am tempted to bid for Ohtani.. maybe valuing him at 68-70.  NOT a number I would usually do but am considering this year.  I can activate him daily as a pitcher OR a hitter; not both.  Question is:  Better to get Ohtani at that price OR KTucker ($45) + a top starter ($23), in general?  Or is it just a toss up and whatever I think?
Ray Murphy
12:17
Daily Ohtani that you can flip back and forth? Fun. I'd start by running CDG for your league, get the batter proj value and the pitcher proj value. Add em together, maybe shave off 10% (since you don't get batting stats on days he pitches)... 68-70 may not be that far off from that number.

12:19
How do you feel coors lineup is gonna swing this season?
Ray Murphy
12:19
That was an awful offense last year... being 29th in Runs while hitting in that ballpark 81 times just shouldn't be possible. And it's not like they've really turned the lineup over that much, either. I expect better things from Doyle, Castro and McCarthy are interesting... but new regime there isn't attached to anyone, expect to see a lot of roster churn as the season goes along.

We talk about small sample size.  When does the sample size become meaningful for batters and pitchers?  100 ABs, 50 IPs assuming they are starters?  What about for relievers or position players in part time roles?
Ray Murphy
12:20
Depends what metrics you're looking at... pitch-level data (contact rates, for instance) can stabilize pretty quicky, batted ball events take longer. Relievers sometimes don't stabilize over a whole season... they're so annoying :)

Is Canzone a priority pickup in mixed roto 5x5 12 teamers? Him or Andrew Vaughn?
Ray Murphy
12:21
Close call, I might favor Canzone tho.

Mixed snake 15 team, tonight.  From your perspective (outside of BHQ?  is that possible?;)) JMarsee or JCaballero for more SBs this year?  What are those totals for each?
Ray Murphy
12:25
Sorry, I don't know how to do a non-HQ perspective.  :)

I was all about Marsee this draft season, one of my favorite targets. I think the SB for these two are probably close, but Marsee fills the other categories more. Of course, his ADP is a good bit higher, so if you want to wait and see if you need the cheaper rabbit, you can wait and target Caballero if he ends up fitting.

12:26
how do you feel about Caleb Durbins chances to be rosterable in 12tm h2h cats leagues?
Ray Murphy
12:26
Oh, I think he fills the stat sheet enough that he's definitely rosterable. SB from 3B is hard to find, so if you get in a situation where you clog your MI with power guys, he makes a nice offset.

Mixed 15 team, obp league.  New to snake drafts.  I have pick 6.  Tell me which option you prefer for first 4 rounds:  Schwarber, Raleigh, Sale/Sanchez/HBrown, Marsee/Caballero.   OR:  KTucker, TTurner, SPs above, WLangford.  Six one way and half a dozen the other?  I guess I am asking permission for the first option... even though the second option is much more balanced (smarter?).
Ray Murphy
12:29
I just said above how much I like Marsee... but wow, spending a top-50ish pick on him would be aggressive even for me. Let alone Caballero. In NFBC 15-teamers last weekend, Marsee was rd 9-10 and Caballero early teens. OBP helps both a bit, but not THIS much.

Michael King helped me win my NL only two years ago, so I am attached.  Bad second half last year and bad spring... am I in denial targeting him as my SP3?   Please rank:  CHorton, Misiorowski, ECabrera, MKing.
Ray Murphy
12:30
Miz looked pretty awesome yesterday. I took King/Miz as my top 2 SPs in a draft last weekend. Love Cabrera too. Horton would be last on this group for me.

Please rank for SBs:  JCaballero, Simpson, Marsee, VScott.  particular favorite or least favorite here?
Ray Murphy
12:30
I mean, they're all going to run. Glad to see VSII get going yesterday. As mentioned, Marsee most well-rounded (and PT secure) of this group.

Please rank, NL only obp league:  XEdwards, JCrawford, JMarsee.

The first 3 weeks is always a scramble to find a lottery ticket player.  I picked up 3 yesterday - Caballero, Delauter, and Max Meyer - Do either of the first two break into the top 30 OFs?  Does Max Meyer become a serviceable starter, rather than going to the 2-start pitcher dumpster fire?
Ray Murphy
12:32
Max can be serviceable, sure. They know how to develop pitching down there, assuming he can stay healthy.

DeLauter is a premium talent, sure, he can be a big riser if he stays healthy. Top 30 OF is a high bar, though. I don't see that kind of ceiling for Caballero.... he'd have to steal 60+ bags.

AL only auction with 9 teams for a leg up on SBs would you target Jose Caballero at an anticipated value of $20, Chandler Simpson at around $15 or avoid these two players and try to accumulate SBs from a variety of players. Thanks
Ray Murphy
12:33
Almost as many Caballero questions as Marsee. You'd think the guy stole 5 bags on Wednesday night!

9-team AL-only, I'd rather go with the approach of chunking your way to SBs than picking up a rabbit... chunking shouldn't be that hard in a somewhat shallower -only league.

Do you think Hunter Barco has a chance to evolve from being a multi-inning reliever to becoming a good starting pitcher over the next month or two?
