Chatters ... hello! Great to be here again; coming off a super First Pitch Online weekend (can order the recordings here if you missed us) and ready to answer some more questions. Let's go ...
SP Depth
12:02
Hi Brent, I plan on focusing on batters early on, so I would like to add several SP on my bench. Which SPs do you like with an ADP higher than 350? Thank you for sharing your knowledge
Brent Hershey
12:02
Ryan Weathers, Kyle Harrison, Casey Mize considering his spring start. If you're able to take on some risk (PT and/or otherwise), also like Bubic, Edward Cabrera, Luis L. Ortiz and Zebby Matthews.

Thanks for all the insights.  Always appreciated.  For an AL-Only, 12-Team 4x4 Roto league (14/9 w/ 2 Catchers), who are some deep options for a second Catcher?  Keeper league, so most of the top guys are spoken for.
Brent Hershey
12:03
I'm looking for AB, trying to minimize damage. Dingler, d'Arnaud, either of the Texas duo, Gary Sanchez all come to mind.

How would you rank the following pitchers in an 18-team Keeper Scoresheet League - Darvish, Arrighetti, Ranger Suarez, and Bello.
Brent Hershey
12:04
Arrighetti, Darvish, Bello, Suarez

If you're in a win-now mode, could make the case for Darvish #1, esp in Scoresheet where I bump up ratio-plus guys. Feel like Darvish being overlooked a bit in standard roto leagues.

12 team mixed league 5x5 with a $75 cap need to dump two who’s the odd hurler out: Snell 5.50 Cole 5.00 Strider 1.09 D. Williams .90 Perez .83 McClanahan .30 Jhoan .03 Gore .01 Max Meyer .01
Brent Hershey
12:06
Perez and .... McClanahan, I guess? Just not sure how he's going to return from TJS #2; already banking on Strider return. Like the Gore/Meyer prices too much, I think.

Joe Boyle.. stud starter, stud  reliever? TB magic? its early I know, but what does your crystal ball say? thank you!
Brent Hershey
12:07
Of the two, more likely RP, it seems. I'd go in with expectations based on that framework. Could well be a important part of that bullpen.

We often see notes to monitor how a pitcher's velocity is sitting in ST to gauge either their recovery from injury, or if the aging curve is catching up to them, etc.  What is a good source to track ST velocity and other "stuff" metrics?
Brent Hershey
12:09
Most reliable in ST is  Baseball Savant/Statcast. Realize that not all ST games have Statcast available, though. It's worth poking around and familiarizing yourself with that site if you haven't already.

Brent—thanks for taking questions.

League: 12 team, NL only, roto 4x4 (standard categories), auction, $260, keeper.

Question: Which player would you recommend keeping from the following pairs? Assume an otherwise balanced roster (i.e., no need to favor any specific categories).

  1. Seiya Suzuki ($24) v. Nico Hoerner ($15)
  2. Christopher Sanchez ($7) v. Max Meyer ($1)
  3. Jason Adam ($10) v. Matt Strahm ($5)

And a closer question:
  1. Would you rather have Ryan Walker at $15 or Trevor Megill at $5?
Brent Hershey
12:11
  1. Hoerner
  2. Sanchez (track record)
  3. Adam

  1. Hmmm ... Walker, but it's close given the $ diff

I am in a AL only and can keep 11 players , keeping Guerrero- 21d, Volpe20d , Witt30f ,Buxton14b, Langford19e, G.Cole20b, Kirby20c, Regans 21d, Skubal21e,Scherzer-1b.Now I need to pick from Hendricks 5b if he turns out to be the closer,C.Keith 5c unless I sign him,Y Diaz 18c last year I can keep him.Hope this all makes since,Thanks for all your help Don, as you can see will not half a lot money for the draft,so if you have any cheap players who might be around for the reserve draft I appreciate any help
Brent Hershey
12:14
Depends on how much you know on Hendricks' role when you have to make this decision. If you're fairly sure he's the saves guy, that's the choice. Big Keith fan otherwise ... but given your other salaries, would just keep him at $5.

Hey Brent, I have a general in-season management question. Do you have a specific daily, weekly, etc routine that you follow? For example, I assume you check MLB player news daily, as well as your league transactions. Do you check the box scores also? Any other sites or subjects to keep you current or one step ahead? Thx.
Brent Hershey
12:19
Yep ... though realize that is my job, so YMMV: I go through every box score every morning, and for me, I've found the ones at baseball-reference the most helpful. Takes a little bit to get used to, but everything is one screen, including the whole detailed game log ... so if I have a question on why this guy pinch-hit or why this pitcher was taken out, I can easily find that. I also use the lineup tracker at B-R a ton (other spot have them too — and we're testing one out at BHQ as we speak). Those help me spot platoons early on, manager usage, etc.

Thank you so much for doing the weekly chats, they are so helpful.
wanted to get your thoughts on Julio Rodriguez and how much Edgar Martinez will impact his hitting. Is this preseason noise and still a possible 1st round land mine or a real thing. Insight and gut feel is always appreciated
Brent Hershey
12:21
If I recall, J-Rod's late season resurgence last year coincided with the manager/coaching staff shakeup. Could be nothing, but my gut, J-Rod's skills/youth/history makes me think something's there.

Would Cubs give up Alcantara for Cease? Would Padres consider? Cubs need to add maybe Brown?
Brent Hershey
12:23
Have no idea but ... a great place to say if you have a subscription to The Athletic, it's worth your time to read the piece that posted over the weekend about Alcantara. SPOILER: it's very very positive.

Best cheap 2B option for this year? Torres, Norby, M Garcia, or Hoerner?
Brent Hershey
12:24
I might buy the Hoerner dip and take on the injury risk. Also wonder about if getting out of NY pressure cooker will be good for Torres. Could plug in nicely with that young team

12:30
Who are some AL rookie pitchers you expect to see come up during the year who may not be on top 50 lists right now?
Brent Hershey
12:30
Rookie pitchers are such a crapshoot for guys in the Top 50, let alone after that. Scanned our HQ100 just now and we've only got 4 AL pitcher from 50-100, and two of those are hurt (Rosario and Tiedemann). Maybe George Klassen (LAA) ... but these are just not good bets if you're looking for 2025 value.

Thanks for the chat, Brent. NL-only, 12-team, dynasty league. Order of preference for these pen dart throws closing games by second half: Halvorsen, Bender, Ferrer, Santana
Brent Hershey
12:32
Bender, Halvorsen, Ferrer, Santana. If you can afford to wait (dynasty context), Ferrer would lead this list for me. But not sure he'll be ready or get the shot soon, esp now with Finnegan back.

Hey Brent! I have a tough call for my final keepers in my 14-team H2H points league (-1 Ks, 1.5 pts RBIs, 5 pt saves/3 pt holds, 1.5 pts per K, no pts for wins, generally favors bats over arms). My plan was to keep J. Merrill ($22), Wm Contreras ($20), and Ragans ($16), and I have $42 more to play with. Options include Harper ($26), Riley ($26), Woo ($16), F. Bautista ($10), and C. Sanchez ($8). The room tends to pay $40-$50 for top bats, $25-$35 for top arms, typically underpays RPs, and value can normally be found in the middle to late rounds since most owners get goo-goo eyes for prospects/youth). Any preferences? Alternately, I could toss them all back and swing a big stack.
Brent Hershey
12:35
Seems like Sanchez is a win at that price (looked amazing in first spring outing), and probably one of Harper/Riley.

How would you rank these outfielders in an 18 team Scoresheet League - Ward, Gurriel Jr., Springer, and Soler?
Brent Hershey
12:37
Ward, Soler, Gurriel, Springer. All have some aspect of appeal.

NL only.  King or Sale as my ace this year?
Brent Hershey
12:37
Sale, slightly. Team context noses him out for me, as I also love King this yr.

12:39
I see catcher Nick Fortes is a bit dinged up for Miami, although I think he is in their lineup today. What do you think the chances are of their #2 prospect Agustin Ramirez having an impact this season eventually?
Brent Hershey
12:39
Better than 50/50, given what I'm taking in from early spring reports. Like that he has a bunch of high minors experience already and though if he stays at C long-term is still in question, shouldn't matter for most of us in 2025. Potentially a big bat

Thanks again for hosting and presenting the informative enriching First Pitch Online event. Almost as good as being in Florida :-) Seems like FPO is becoming a regular thing now, which is great regardless of Florida's status. Speaking of which, what is the status of FPF? Was this just a one year hiatus from Florida, yet to be determined, or is First Pitch Florida for sure no longer in the cards moving forward?
Brent Hershey
12:40
Thanks for attending, Michael! Status is still TBD. Would love to be in-person at spring training, but gotta make the balance sheet work. Was a challenge on that front the two previous years, so we shifted to this format for 2024. We'll see in the future.
