Happy Draft season to you all! Been a while since us at BaseballHQ have held chats; plans are to do this all season as long as demand is high. So welcome; I'll get to as many questions as I can. Reminder that when submitting, short context (lg scoring, player pool) is very helpful. Away we go!

Looking to keep some saves.  Assume cost, contract, etc. the same - would you keep A Bradley or G Gallegos?
Brent Hershey
12:03
I'd slightly prefer Bradley, given his experience and it seems like he's been tagged with the role to start. Like Gallegos a lot (esp ratios) and he's on my radar, but lotsa moving parts in STL bullpen as of today.

Given the Dodgers crowded outfield and the fact that AJ Pollack performs equally against both RHP and LHP, do you think Joc Pederson will lose significant at bats this year?  Maybe they both become 50% players?
Brent Hershey
12:06
The scuttled LA-on-LA trade says to me that the Dodgers feel they can get along just fine without him. Yes, I'd expect him to lose some PT this year if he remains a Dodger. Don't discount totally --- I've seen him fall too far in drafts -- but situation there is tenuous I'd think.

What kind of impact will Garret Hampson have this year? His hot three week stretch in Sept. 2019 seemed kind of fluke-y.
Brent Hershey
12:08
So tough to say with COL, given how they've handled youngsters recently. Remember that this time last year, we had high hopes for GH, from his SB potential. Dual eligibility is nice; he's a second-tier guy with upside until I'm more sure about playing time
Katman
12:12
Trying to figure out how the Rockies apportion playing time. Too many players for too few ABs for my feeble brain. Murphy’s got to be gone as soon as they find a taker. Is McMahon an every day guy? Where do Hampson’s ABs come from? Brendan Rodgers?
Brent Hershey
12:12
Hey Katman! Off last question, you and me both on COL playing time. My pref list right now (largely driven by playing time "certainty") is McMahon/Hampson/Rodgers (who's shoulder injury is a concern for me unless you can get him for next to nothing). Each has shown skills to surprise, but opportunity is the key. If an Arenado trade somehow happens (I'm kinda doubtful) then of course things change.

Trying to acquire some pitching in a keeper league, who will give me the least amount of FOMO long term if I trade them away: Kieboom or Groshans?
Brent Hershey
12:14
Groshans would be the one I'd keep; he's flying a bit under the radar it seems b/c missing most of 2019 with injury. Still has to prove himself and is further away, but I see more impact potential with the bat.

Do I keep Mahle?  He probably doesn't make the rotation but he's been deemed someone to watch this season.  And the Reds look improved so all it would take is an injury.
Brent Hershey
12:15
A Mahle fan here ... but not sure he's keepable b/c of role uncertainty. If you have keeper room, I guess—but I always think guys like this you can likely get cheap in your draft/auction.

Worth keeping either of Brandon Lowe $14 or Colome $14? AL 5x5
Brent Hershey
12:19
This is a Know Your League question ... we have Colome as more valuable, but that assumes he keeps CL role all season. In your lg is that price reflective of middle to low tier closers? Is he your only saves source going in? I like Lowe overall, but with TAM's mix/match approach, ABs are not guaranteed, and his price doesn't strike me as cheap. I'd prob lean Colome if I had to pick one.

Long time BaseballHQ subscriber here.  I have room for 1 more starting picture on my freeze roster.  Gallen, Urias, Musgrove, Marquez or even Lugo.  Who do I keep?
Brent Hershey
12:22
Thanks for your support; we love long-timers! Would be down to Gallen or Urias for me. Like Urias' stuff and long-term prospects better b/c of that, but Gallen's projected innings/rotation spot seems more secure given how fluid LA is with their pitchers. Slight Gallen lean; tho Urias isn't a bad option to choose either.

Hard to believe that no one signed Puig.  What are the odds that he is inked this season, and when?
Brent Hershey
12:23
It is. And I have no idea.

I'm trying to take even slight MLB experience into consideration here but s Griffin Canning worth a keeper slot if it's at the cost of drafting top ~50 pitching prospect?
Brent Hershey
12:26
Man, I dunno; I've been getting bad vibes on that Canning situation this spring. And I was on board after those first couple of starts in 2019. Think I'd punt and reset the game. Again.

Pitching prospects, man.

Wish it didn’t have to be at the expense of Calhoun, but on a scale of 1-10 how excited are you for Nick Solak SZN?
Brent Hershey
12:28
Seven. Still have some questions on whether Solak's defense is good enough for a full-time role in the field (which of course affects what our main concerns are—AB). But this is an opening that can only benefit him.

bader, acquino or alex dickerson? all $5 nl only
Brent Hershey
12:30
Bader slightly over Acquino; think he has better chance to find his way through a full OF. Shape of production will obviously be different.
Roberto

$10 Josh James for $10 Gio Urshella. Who'd you want? AL 5x5
Brent Hershey
12:31
Urshela, though don't consider either one a bargain at $10

NL Only keeper auction league with 37% inflation: Still cant imagine Yelich goes for $55 or Freeman for $45. SO who is the better bang for the bucks?
Brent Hershey
12:34
Hear ya. Yelich, b/c we play with five categories.

Hi Brent - do you play Best Ball?  If so, do you have any broad rules you follow for the format?
Brent Hershey
12:38
Heh ... trying it for the first time this year (RazzSlam format), and am in the final stages of that 42-round draft. Know your rules, obviously: in this league, CL score high so I loaded up (downside is that they are so volatile ... sowhoknows). Other thing I realized is that I was taking more streaky players (often with shaky skills) than I would normally. Get the hot streaks to work for you. Maybe ... ? .... ask me again in several months. I will say it's fun trying out something new.

Advise a dart throw on Trevor Rosenthal?
Brent Hershey
12:41
Sigh. No, but that is heavily influenced by my viewing of him in AA-Harrisburg last June where he (checks notes) was up to 98, but mechanics were a mess and gave up 2-run HR and a screaming liner out in 1 IP. I mean I guess in the last round or for a buck ???

What is your best guess on how the new Rangers ballpark compares to the old one?
Brent Hershey
12:42
Indications from folks smarter than me is that it will play much more towards neutral given the roof will be closed a good bit. Obv we'll need to re-train our brains on that one ...

Are you buying that Kiner-Falefa's offseason adjustments and mental liberation from tools of ignorance are fueling his hit tool improvement or is it more a cactus mirage? Bonus: what are odds he breaks camp with team?
Brent Hershey
12:46
From what I can gather, it is a mechanical tweak (stance), which I tend to put more stock into rather than "I'm not catching anymore" type of proclamations. And when the results are good, the player has to feel good about it, right? So I'm cautiously optimistic. Still think an OD roster spot might be tough, but another case in which the Calhoun injury could help K-F's chances. I'll be continuing to track him.

Jake Arrietta coming off an injury that likele negatively impacted him all last year - Has he shown this spring he can rebound
Brent Hershey
12:48
I mean, define "rebound" ... I view him right now as topping out as an innings-eater. Yes, he can rebound there—and you can't question his dedication or willingness to adapt to a downgrade in 'stuff' given what he pitched through in 2019—but just don't think he can consistently be anything more than that at this stage of his career.

Is Braden Bishop as a minor leaguer keeper in a very deep league even worth losing a reserve spot for?
