The Marlins and Guardians seem like natural trade partners with the Guardians having a surplus of contact-oriented hitters that made their major league debut this season and the Marlins possessing a starting pitcher like Pablo Lopez, who would fit nicely at the top of the Cleveland rotation with Bieber and McKenzie. Thoughts?
Mark P
2:17
Guards are an interesting candidate, though they've been so good at developing their own pitching that trading prospects to acquire an arm (even a solid pitcher like Lopez) might not be a priority.
2:18
It's not out of the question, however, since Cleveland has a lot of infield prospects and Miami has a need at 3B if Anderson isn't returning
Atkins Plan
2:19
I have many catchers, Marlins have many starting pitchers.  What might a deal look like?
Mark P
2:21
(Ross Atkins = Blue Jays GM)

I don't see the Jays moving Moreno, but Kirk-for-Lopez is an interesting basis for a deal.  Since Kirk has more years of control, Miami might have to add something extra, or else it'd be a multi-player deal of some kind on both sides.

Who is going to play first base for the Marlins?
Mark P
2:22
My guess is Cooper, though a trade wouldn't surprise me.  I'd say maybe a 66% chance it's Cooper, and 34% chance it's someone not currently in the organization
2:23
Lewin Diaz is reportedly not really in the team's plans as an everyday player, otherwise I'd include him in the mix as well

How much of a difference could a “star” or even good Cuban player make on the Marlins (ticket wise)  Giving Jose Abreu a higher short AAV, could be something they can afford and he’s as dependable as they come.
Mark P
2:25
a Cuban player is a nice bonus for the market, but I think the Marlins would be interested in any player of Abreu's caliber.  He is an intriguing possibility, but it depends on how much the Fish are willing to spend, and if Abreu would prefer to join a team closer to contention in 2023

Marlins are looking for a CF that fits their payroll, and the Dbacks have shown interest in Pablo Lopez.  Do you see a possible trade there?  And which CF might be most interesting to the Marlins?  Alek Thomas or Jake McCarthy?
Mark P
2:27
McCarthy wouldn't be the centerpiece of a Lopez trade, but Thomas (top 100 prospect type) would be more of a fit.

2:28
Am I wrong in thinking that trading Pablo Lopez for a "big bat" wouldn't be nearly enough? I feel like they need to sign at least 2 big free agents in addition to trading some pitching to even get close to having a decent offense. I fear this offseason will be yet another failure unless they really go for it. Bryan Reynolds would be nice, but he's not going to save this offense. I feel like they need Reynolds, a big 4 SS, and one of Brandon Nimmo/Jose Abreu/Wilson Contreras. But I'm sure they'll only sign Benintendi and continue to waste all of this great young pitching.

Miami is in kind of a tight spot, since while so many members of their lineup underachieved last year, injuries also played a role.  It's not out of the question that any of Soler/Cooper/Avisail/Anderson/Rojas have good seasons next year, but not all of them will bounce back, so it's a question of trying to guess the right ones to retain.
2:31
As to your question, sure, they could splurge on multiple name players, but that doesn't seem realistic given their spending history (unless Bruce Sherman surprises us all).  And, the Marlins are surely hopeful they'll get at least one bounce-back performance to fill one hole from within.
Angels/Marlins
2:32
Why do you think the Marsh/Meyer never went through?
Mark P
2:34
Could be any number of reasons.  At the time of those talks (prior to the 2021 trade deadline), the Angels were dealing with some injuries and uncertainty in their outfield, so they were maybe less open to moving Marsh.  Also, Meyer wasn't quite MLB-ready at that point and Marsh was, so maybe that contributed to the disconnect.

How real is the Marlins tax when it comes to free agents, and what would you say it is? Like, does Miami need to overpay by 10% to sign someone? 20%?
Mark P
2:36
It occurs to me that given how many ballplayers live in Florida, and given how many players you see wanting to play closer to home, there's a real missed opportunity here for the Marlins (and Rays).

The Braves are currently gaining an edge on the market since they're the team nearest to Florida that is actually willing to spend, as opposed to the two teams that actually play in Florida.  A Marlins team that operated with closer to a league-average payroll might have a real nice geographic advantage in luring players

Could the Marlins go after someone like JD Martinez? Have a solid offensive threat in the middle of the lineup as a DH, and have Cooper take over at first?
Mark P
2:38
JDM is an interesting fit, and might fall into Miami's price range.  However, both he and Soler are mostly-DH types, and alternating them between left field and DH every game might not be feasible.

Hey Mark, I really like these team-specific chats but a bit more notice and a little more time between them and the outlook articles would be helpful. This is especially true for the teams I don't follow as closely. Thanks.

We're still working out the scheduling kinks on these team-specific chats.  It's hard to schedule them too far in advance, since then we run the risk of the chat being delayed by breaking news (like today with the Bochy hiring).

Our rough plan is to aim for a chat hosted within 24 hours of an Outlook piece being posted

Bryan de la cruz was pretty decent after his last callup. Is he a lock to be an everyday player or more of a 4th outfielder?
Mark P
2:41
Marlins would love to solve their CF issue from within, so if De La Cruz can continue to be passable with the glove and good at the plate, he'll earn more playing time.

2:41
do you think the marlins will be big players in the relief pitcher market?
Mark P
2:42
Probably not.  They'll allocate their dollars towards bigger needs, since they can use some of the young pitchers in the bullpen, or just target some lower-cost veteran types

This seems to be common knowledge that I’m out of the loop on: why isn’t Miami a thriving baseball market? Admittedly, I know close to nothing about the area and may just be getting the impression that it seems like it could be a great baseball city off of generalizations, assumptions and the like, but what are your thoughts and what do you hear from others in and around the game?
Mark P
2:44
The Marlins have had such a weird history that I can't blame Miami fans for not getting on board.  Between the ownership troubles, the constant fire sales, the general lack of spending (or, more frustratingly, big spending that than is then suddenly curtailed), and the stadium payment fiasco, there hasn't been a ton to root for over 30 seasons.
2:45
And, despite it all, two World Series titles!

If an Outlook piece was already posted on a team (A's), but you didn't do the chats then, will you bring a team back - A's fan
Mark P
2:46
Yeah, we're going to eventually do chats on all teams, including the ones we've previously published Outlooks about

Having a hard time seeing Marlins paying Rojas, Anderson, and Wendle next year. Who is most likely to go?
Mark P
2:47
Anderson
Kim Ng
2:48
Cedric Mullins or Bryan Reynolds or Varsho? Any of them available?
Mark P
2:49
Any of them could be feasibly available, since the Marlins have the pitching depth to get the attention of almost any team in a trade.

But, I'd think it unlikely that Varsho is the outfielder the D'Backs would move, if they move any of their young OFs at all.  Baltimore might now be more focused on contending and thus would prefer to keep Mullins.  This makes Reynolds maybe the likeliest of that trio, but Pittsburgh is asking a king's ransom in return

2:50
Would the Angels make sense as a club willing to take on Soler’s salary if a SP such as Cabrera or Garret are attached?
Mark P
2:52
It's probably unlikely the Marlins move one of their good young arms just to unload salary.  And if they did, the Angels aren't a fit in this scenario since Ohtani is the DH, so Soler would have to mostly play the outfield (which isn't ideal)
