How likely do you think it is Edward Cabrera will attain “ace” status?
Mark P
9:35
Maybe "ace" is a matter of semantics, but Cabrera certainly has the potential for front-of-the-rotation stuff.  "Ace" in my view means a clear-cut No.1 type, which is difficult for any pitcher to attain even if they're still quality hurlers

Cabrera and plus for T Casas. Who says no?
Mark P
9:37
So in essence a new version of the Arraez/Lopez deal?  This seems like the kind of trade that can work for both clubs, except again with Arraez, I wonder if first base might be his ultimate home.  Acquiring Casas means you're kind of stuck with Arraez at second base, unless Soler is moved to open up the DH spot

9:38
What can we expect from this year’s club that might be different from previous years?
Mark P
9:39
It feels like I've been a bit down on the Marlins thus far in the chat, so I'm probably due for something positive!  In a vacuum, I do think they'll hit better, and the changes at manager and on the coaching staff seem like good steps.

When does Xavier Edwards get a call-up? I don’t get the indifference towards him. SD and TB traded him, and he couldn’t crack the Marlins’ roster despite hitting .353 this spring. Isn’t his skill set exactly what teams claim to want?
Mark P
9:42
The X-Man's lackluster Triple-A numbers last year were a bigger issue for Miami than his spring numbers.  If Edwards rebounds in the minors, he'll definitely get back on the radar as a future piece, especially if Chisholm will no longer be part of the infield mix

Who is most likely to bat lead off?
Mark P
9:43
Probably should be Arraez, given his on-base skills

Are you a playing? Jasrado Prince Hermis Arrington Chisholm Jr. is on the cover.
Mark P
9:44
Cool, any relation to Jazz Chisholm Jr.?

I'm not a big gamer, and my last regularly-played baseball game was probably Ken Griffey Jr. on the SNES.  (Man, I'm old!)

The Marlins have one of the most underrated ballparks in the game, fact!
Mark P
9:45
Quite possibly, though I've never been.  I've never heard anything bad about the ballpark, aside from maybe that gaudy old statue thing that used to be in the outfield
Cito's Mustache
9:46
Any observations/thoughts about how Jazz has looked in the outfield this spring?
Mark P
9:47
The general consensus is that he's looked shaky, which isn't surprising given that he's literally playing CF for the first time.  Learning on the fly during the regular season isn't ideal, but that was the risk the Marlins were willing to take in trying Jazz in center in the first place

Why did we trade for Luis Arraez, no power few steals, bad knees
Mark P
9:48
Very good average, very good at making contact and avoiding strikeouts.  The pluses outweigh the minuses for me with Arraez.

When is Garrett called up and what should we expect from him?
Mark P
9:50
Ha, I had a whole thing about Braxton Garrett written out before I realized (since you said 'called up') that you probably meant Garrett Hampson?
9:51
Hampson will probably be the first call-up in the event of injury, since he can play multiple positions and take over utility duty from Berti (who might get more regular playing time to more directly fill in for that injury)
9:52
A change of scenery might help him, but Hampson probably is what he is at this point....a useful bench piece who can plug holes, but not much at the plate

Is Kim Ng on the hot seat if this team wins fewer than 70 games again?
Mark P
9:54
2023 might be her last year under contract anyway, since the terms of Ng's deal weren't made public when she was hired.

As I said earlier, it's hard to entirely evaluate Ng, but if the Marlins do struggle again, it wouldn't be a shock if a front office change was made.

If the Marlins are doing decent enough to be close to the 6th playoff spot, and Garcia and Soler are doing well...and both Sanchez and de la Cruz are doing well, who can you see moved? And what area of need would you think they'd add to with a trade of one of them?
Mark P
9:57
If all four are doing well, my first guess would be that the Marlins wouldn't trade any of them, unless they were offered something of comparable value to get Garcia's deal off the books.

Depending on how the infield is shaping up, maybe an outfielder could be traded for a center fielder?  This naturally also hinges on how well Chisholm is handling CF, and if there's room at first base for Arraez.  Maybe Miami trades Garrett Cooper, Arraez/Gurriel becomes the primary 1B tandem?

What is the plan with Jake Mangum? Scrappy small high contact hitter with great defense.
Mark P
9:59
Sorry, bad time for a computer freeze!
10:01
Interesting player on paper, and definitely fits the model of what the Marlins might be looking for going forward.  Seems quite possible he might be in the bigs before the season is out, assuming he keeps doing well at Triple-A

Is a Bryan Reynolds trade still possible? Anthony Santander if the Orioles are on the outside looking in? Any other names that come to mind?
Mark P
10:03
Can't entirely rule out a Reynolds trade until he's either dealt elsewhere or unless the Pirates actually extend him.  It's less likely, however, since Miami would have to make a very big dip into its farm system, and that might not be something they want to do having moved a few pitchers already
Eury Perez is surely the Pirates' top ask in any Reynolds trades, and the Marlins don't seem likely to move him for anyone
Marlins Man

When does an Alcantara trade make sense?
Mark P
10:04
When the team completely craters and a rebuild is absolutely necessary.  I can understand why the Marlins are deadset on keeping Alcantara --- he's their ace, he's the best-case scenario, they've already committed to him with a big extension, and trading yet another star in a rebuild would gut the fanbase.
