I'm not sure they will make him an offer given how little interest they showed in re-signing him prior to the trade deadline. Maybe they will give it a go if they trade away a contract or two to create some space. But I think Guentzel will sign elsewhere. Being traded presumably opened his eyes to the possibilities for the second half of his career. And going on a playoff run in Carolina has to make him recognize that if he wants to experience that feeling in the future, he probably needs to sign somewhere other than Pittsburgh.

What are your thoughts on P.O. Joseph? Is he a real second pairing defenseman, a third pair or 7th guy. I get he's gotten better but am still underwhelmed.

I think that's a good summation. Worth re-signing as a RFA if the cost is reasonable but you also want to try to find a better, steadier option.

The team obviously has to get younger (and it will, via the handful of prospects that are knocking on the door), but do you see that preventing them from giving money to a good player in his late 20s or in his 30s, as long as he can still play well?  i personally just want good players, whether theyre old or young.

I think it would be a mistake but I can't rule out the possibility right now.

Are the Pens issues Goalie/ Bad defense? How do you expect to win games when you give up so many goals. Winning 5-4 or 6-5. its tough to watch a team up by 3 goals only to lose by 2 or 3 goals in the final period..Uggghhh

In the first half of the season, the Penguins actually had pretty good defense and goaltending. The big issue was scoring. But as for your last point, they can't expect to blow so many multi-goal leads and expect to amount to anything. The number of those the last two years was alarming, and it's one of the reasons why I have become receptive to the idea of a coaching change, even if the lapses are more on the player than the coach. Something needs to change there.

Unfortunately, our time is up. Apologies if you had a question that I didn't get to. I am going to make a point to do these more regularly during the offseason. In the meantime, don't hesitate to shoot me a note at mvensel@post-gazette.com if you're curious about something. Have a great day today. It's beautiful in Pittsburgh, isn't it?
