Back at it! Queue is bursting again, so let's go!

Hi Brent, I own Kopech in a deep league that rewards wins much more than anything else.  His IP per game (and projected IP for year) worry me. Will he will bloom into a 6 IP type of guy soon?
And, will India hit the 20/20 mark again this year? How much has the injuries and Reds’ team taken the shine off him?
Brent Hershey
12:07
Seems like that was the risk all along with Kopech for this year, that there would be a workload cap to some extent. Is going to be tougher for him also, as efficiency not a strongpoint right now (flip side to the K-heavy game of his). So will probably be dicey hoping for a 6-inning guy this year. Would have to think the wheels come off a bit in 2023 if he gets through 2022 healthy.
I'd probably take the under on India 20/20 at this point. Given the fact they rushed him back too early, team context and all likely means they err on the side of caution for his return, which eats away at that potential -- let alone if the hammy restricts his running. Sorry to the be bearer of bad news here ....

Appreciate the chats, as always. In AL-only league. Is AJ Pollock done (hitting that age-34 drop off)?
Brent Hershey
12:10
I wouldn't say "done", but early season returns def look like a step down even though Statcast numbers look fairly stable. You probably need to hold for now in an AL-only (unless it's shallow), but best to reduce expectations a bit.

Brent,

Thank you for always treating my Monday blues with this column! Any chance you can play "either/or
with us for a few players? Who would you rather have for the next 2 years between:

  1. A. Akil Badoo and B. Josh Naylor?
  2. A. Aaron Nola and B. Zach Wheeler?
  3. A. Owen Miller and B. Rowdy Tellez?
  4. A. Alec Bohm or B. Ke'Bryan Hayes?
  5. A. Tyler Stephenson or B. Daulton Varsho?

Thank you so much!
Brent Hershey
12:14
  1. Naylor; just a better hitter.
  2. Wheeler; hoping he can get back near 2021 velocity. Super close, though.
  3. Tellez; better power and more PT security
  4. Hayes; less things to go wrong "overall" given the chasm in defensive value even though Bohm might have a slight edge in power upside
  5. Varsho slightly; though I worry about his longevity if he becomes the full-time catcher in ARI. If they're both only catchers, I might give Stephenson the edge.

Fun game!

Hi Brent! Thanks for these chats. We can try to FAAB Yeprez tonight. IF I get him A) how much of my $100 should I spend, B) I need to waive A Rivas or T Demerritte. What are your thoughts on these 3 players in NL 5x5?
Also, is Stott up to stay in Philly or just until Gregorius returns?
Brent Hershey
12:18
A) Figuring a deep NL-only, I think this is where you pony up, given STL's track record, the power history and other issues in that Cards lineup. Maybe in the 40s?
B) I'd probably prefer to hold Rivas; could see more likely that he takes ABs from Schwindel over the course of the season than Dermerrite keeps this up in ATL
C) It's likely short-term for Didi ... though if he hits, that will make the decision tougher. My guess is that once Didi is ready, Stott retreats to AAA.

12:19
Moncada comes of my DL today.  Would you drop Kwan or KiKi Hernandez to activate him?  Seems like Kiki is back to his old pre-Red Sox self.
Brent Hershey
12:19
Yeah, would make Hernández the drop if those are the only two options.
David
12:23
I've been holding out hope that Matt Barnes or Lucas Simms could step up and take control of the closer role for their teams,  Time to give up ?  King and Holmes are available from the Yanks or Jimenez from Oakland.
Brent Hershey
12:23
Sims ... yes, think it's time to move on from him. Mix of his own skills plus murky team context (they're bad AND manager seems to like to mix and match for saves)
Barnes ... was ready to cut bait myself, but weekend outing showed better velo, and I STILL think he's the guy BOS would prefer if/when he turns it around. B/c of that, at this moment, slightly prefer to King/Holmes/Jiménez, esp if the main draw is saves. Would say Jiménez #2 option in this list after Barnes (but there (OAK) is yet another murky situation, too)

12:24
Thoughts on Brayan Bello, arm looks electric, when do Red Sox bring him up, will they use him as a starter.
Brent Hershey
12:24
Yes, seems like he's a starter, but also seems to be after the Sale/Paxton rehabbers, right? Unless there's a crazy need soon, he feels like a July/August callup to me.
Will
12:27
your thoughts on Puk closing for As? as always thank you!
Brent Hershey
12:27
All over the place ... early in draft season, I plucked him in a couple draft/holds with this in mind. Backed off in spring training when they began to stretch him out with not much success. And now that he's throwing gas AND not walking guys in the majors, I'm intrigued again for a bullpen arm. Lotsa movement still to come in OAK, but he would likely be the type of young --eer, cheap--player that will stay. Could well end up saving some games around mid-season, and if successful, I'd think they'd keep him in that role. Been picking him up again over the past few weeks in leagues where I can stash him.

AL 6x6 dynasty. Thought I had a good starting 5 with Bieber, Framber, Joe Ryan, Kikuchi and Sandoval. Am I desperate enough to grab Brad Keller, Pineda or Dunning off the waiver wire?
Brent Hershey
12:30
Never have too much pitching. Cautiously optimistic for B Keller and Dunning, both with pitch-level tweaks. Some moderate value in a dynasty; though neither has high upside. Pineda will have some weeks (this might be one of em, upcoming), but a distant third overall.

5x5 NL only league - who do you prefer ROS - Lamonte Wade or Alek Thomas?
Brent Hershey
12:32
Thomas, though far from a slam dunk. I see more likely that he is up for good, holds his own, and plays everyday than Wade getting more AB and damage to overtake Thomas in relative value. Rookie risk in Thomas, but still lean that way.

12 Team AL-Only.  Picked up Royce Lewis before news on Correa was that there was no fracture -- keep him if Correa comes back quickly or is he not going to see enough ABs to be worth the stash (3 RES and 7 IL Slots)?
Brent Hershey
12:38
Think it all depends on how else you're using those 3 RES spots. Even assuming that Lewis goes back to the minors, if you're able to stash him in RES without too much consequence (which you might be able to do with those IL spots), then I'd probably try to do that. Was telling to me that he was the callup so early when they thought CC was down for a while. Tells me that MIN thinks Lewis can handle it and is for real. BUT ... he's played nowhere other than SS so far in 2022; had taken some balls at other positions in years previous. So if they view him as a SS only, then that probably works against you as long as CC is healthy.

12:41
Alex Wood vs COL (and maybe another weekend start against STL) or Alex Cobb vs COL?
Brent Hershey
12:41
Just 1:1 vs COL, our numbers say Cobb the better play (though both are strong starts). Wood vs. STL passable, but def more risky. Likely depends on how much you think you need that extra start.
John
12:46
How concerned are you about Justin Turner? Nelson Cruz?
Brent Hershey
12:46
Turner: yes, ct% fallen into the 70s for the first time in his career. LA still running him out there, and they are a smart org, FWIW.
Cruz: some metrics still solid, but others not so much (pounding the ball into the ground). Age only, he's probably the bigger risk -- but providing more than Turner at this stage, too. Not settled, but def could see this finally being the downturn year for these two vets.

Good Day, Brent!  Always a great way to start the week with this chat. 12 team NL Only 4x4.  My patience is growing thin with Mahle and Marquez.  Are any of these uninspiring options (N. Martinez, E. Hernandez, M. Keller, Brubaker, Fedde) worth dropping either for, or is just more patience needed? When do you consider dropping one or both for ratio strengthening  relievers?  Thanks!
Brent Hershey
12:50
Might choose one of these two to move on from -- hold patiently on the other. I'd lean towards patience with Mahle, though agree it's been ugly. Hernandez probably the best long-term option of the choices; can spot Brubaker occasionally (like when he's got CIN this week). Fedde, maybe > Marquez, too. But yes, a solid reliever might be an option also
doctor horrible
12:52
HI There, thanks for doing this, mixed league 5x5 a couple of quickies for you.. which OF to start J Pederson or M Yaz? and  do you like either of them over Nelson Cruz at DH? THANKS
Brent Hershey
12:52
Joc > Yaz this week; just hoping that power binge continues. And slight pref for both over Cruz, though you might be taking a volume hit.
Greg
12:55
Good morning-Appreciate your input as always-In an AL 5 x5 and someone just released Matt Barnes. There isn't a ton on the wire and I need saves. I also have Trivino I haven't activated but both pitchers have been brutal. Any chance for either to redeem themselves in the next few months or should I dump both and grab like a Yarborough who is still available? Thanks, Greg
Brent Hershey
12:55
Mentioned above, I'm not quite ready to give up on Barnes yet. If you need saves in an AL, think that's a worthy shot to take right now and give it a couple weeks, even if he's sitting on reserve in the short term. Feel like he's the preferred option for BOS as soon as he shows that he's got his stuff back.

12:56
Brent, Moncada rest of year? Thank you
Brent Hershey
12:56
Was interested in the pre-season and remain so now, assuming that he's healthy. Still super young, could take a step up.

Brent, I need some help finding upside:   1) In a points league where WINS and SAVES are paramount, I can keep one. Is this the right order?
Z. Logue >> Humberto Castellanos > Vince Velasquez > Jose Quintana? (If these guys are all turds, I can keep Clay Holmes as a SV speculation)
2) In a points league where HR are RBI are paramount, I can keep one. Who is the best upside play for ROS?  Ben Gamel >> Tyrone Taylor > Bobby Dalbec > Yadiel Hernandez > TJ Friedl?
Brent Hershey
1:00
1) I might actually just keep Holmes ... the W or Sv option there is probably BETTER than the SP-only options you listed.
2) HR/RBI, I still go Dalbec, though it's been an ugly start. Easily highest upside (tho obv w/ a lot of risk). Gamel a bit of a safter #2 play. Think he continues to find AB and more pop than TT/ YH / TJF

OK, lightning round; we'll see how many I can get to ...

Happy Monday! How are we feeling about Charlie Morton after yesterday’s start? Is there reason for optimism?
Brent Hershey

Yes. Some risk still but gotta ride him
