Good Monday, all! Approximately one-quarter of the season down, as amazing as that seems. Let's get right to the questions!
Julie

Hi, Brent. I drafted Gabriel Moreno in my keeper league this year, where we have both AVG and OBP as categories. Considering his cost (low), I'm happy with the results so far.

Long-term, can you see him developing 10-15 per season HR power? If so, in my format, he could be the best catcher in the league.

Thanks for your time!!
Brent Hershey
12:02
Yes, I think that is his future power range. Not crazy high HR totals at least to start, but BA and OBP is going to make them a very valuable fantasy catcher. Ultimate power ceiling will be determined on if/how he's able to adjust. But early returns are very good.

Happy Monday lifesaving chat. In AL-only Roto league. One former prospect getting new life and PT this year is Andy Ibanez. Are his skills - and outlook - different this year?
Brent Hershey
12:06
Jeff! Let's dial back the expectations, big guy! :-)
I am interested some in Ibañez. He was a fringy prospect earlier with Texas, partially b/c he was a bit older than traditional international players when he signed from Cuba. Could be a pretty nice AL-only piece, especially if DET continues to give him (and/or he earns) 3B playing time. Recent returns are good. moderate power with a bit of speed.

Cron is injured, what are the chances they promote Nolan Jones?  He's batting .334-11 HR with a 15% BB%, what more does he need to do to get promoted?
Brent Hershey
12:10
Maybe a different organization?
Seriously, though, remember the context of those AAA stats - high-altitude Albuquerque. Still, seems like this would be the chance to see some more of Jones' bat -- he's split time between 3B and OF (playing OF seems more likely right now). But the Rocks are tough to pin down on this stuff.

Good morning Brent-I am in a 5x5 Dynasty AL league with minor leaguers and have been offered Daulton Varsho ($28 salary) for 2 minor leaguers that are each $5-Bo Naylor and Jordan Westburg. I am in 4th place and with luck and health could end up in 2nd. I currently have Zeby Zavala who isn't doing anything. Do I make the trade or wait for Bo Naylor to get promoted? Thanks
Brent Hershey
12:13
I'd say in this context (AL-only; in the hunt), this is the type of deal I'd look to be making. Naylor and Westburg are both close, but there's no guarantee they are going to hit the ground running. Giving up both for a slightly underperforming vet like this is exactly the type of move you should be looking to make. Thumbs up from here.

Jose Ramierez- power is down significantly.  Any hope it returns and he is the 30-25 guy his owners  drafted.  The Indians certainly need his power as well.
Brent Hershey
12:17
Yeah, not overly concerned here. All the Statcast-level batted ball metrics (exit velo, launch angle, barrels, hard-hit rate) are consistent with other years. Looks like he's been a bit unlucky on HR (4 actual vs. 6.8 expected HR via Statcast), which usually evens out in time. So he's a hold for me ... but yes, it's especially frustrating for a GUARDIANS (old habits, I know--and speak from experience) perspective. That team needs some pop badly.

Thanks for the Monday chat. You have any thoughts on Elvin Rodriguez and wether they will call him up soon to help with depth. Also who else could you see having an impact being called Pitcher wise that could become a worthy add. Thanks sorry if I asked the same question, wasn’t sure they were going through or not.
Brent Hershey
12:22
Those he has some nice numbers, Elvin Rodriguez is likely not an answer for TAM from a fantasy perspective.  A bit on the older side (25); could happen w/ TAM I guess but he's more likely to be an up and down guy. DL Hall, Simeon Woods Richardson, maybe Tiedemann or Painter post-ASB, depending how rehabs go are some later-season possibilities for pitching callups

Brent, I need to cut one of the following in an AL only 5x5:  Mikail Garcia, Burger, Moncada, Siri, or Laureno.  Thoughts?  Thanks in advance.
Brent Hershey
12:25
Laureano I guess — though I also wonder just how long TAM is going to give Siri playing time when there's so much swing and miss there. But plays outstanding D and has the roto-friendly HR/SB combo.

What's wrong with Trea Turner? Any hope on the horizon? Paid big money for him in an NL-only league
Brent Hershey
12:27
Gotta hold him. Just hasn't found his groove yet, but that will come with that park/lineup. You may be disappointed in the SB numbers, though, if you believed he had a chance to be a big gainer with the new rules. Has stated in preseason and again that doesn't plan to go out of his way to run a lot. I'd still expect similar SB totals by October -- just not a SB spike.

Brent, 4x4 al-only league using ks instead of WHIP.  I just traded Varland and EROD for Gerritt Cole and Story.  Mistake or good deal?
Brent Hershey
12:28
I think that's a good deal — from the old 'get the best player in the trade' axiom. Think it's applicable here.

Brett Baty slumping. Far from overmatched but minor league power has not translated thus far. Is he a hold in keeper format (12 team 5x5 OBP)? Or would you punt to give Kirilloff, Schmitt, or Soler a shot?
Brent Hershey
12:30
In a keeper, I'd hold unless you feel he's inhibiting your current run. Kirilloff the nearest to Baty in terms of likely long-term production, but you have a long injury history with him to reconcile. BB's slump just part of the MLB acclimation process in my opinion.

Hey, Brent. Hope all is well. Just thought I'd stop by and say Hi while I'm sitting here waiting for the Guardians to solve their power problems by calling up Bo Naylor. Surely, he can't be worse than Zunino and Gallagher?
Brent Hershey
12:35
Hey Tim! Leave it to you to insert a Canada-themed question ;-)  I mean if you're the Guards and looking for power, Zunino seemed to the perfect bridge, right? Would love to see what Bo can do, but as you know there's soooo much more involved in a catcher call-up and/or day-to-day readiness than just whether the bat is ample enough. (Be right back, the Cardinals are on Line One ....)

12:37
Hi Brent - do you see Royce Lewis having a fantasy impact this year?
Brent Hershey
12:37
I do think it's possible, though perhaps my rooting interest (just from purely a human-interest, making it back from two surgeries way) is coming through. BUT ... if he plays a lot of 3B in his rehab, that tells me the Twins could be seeing what they have there for later this season. And then we could be talking. Still love the talent and adjustments he made at the plate in the brief time last year before the second ACL injury.

Reprising the Taj Bradley vs. Jordan Walker debate. Both have had a rough go of it since being demoted. Walker perhaps more understandable since he is working on swing (reducing GB%). But then the Contreras mess has his path back to MLB more cloudy than ever. Who do you prefer this season and beyond?
Brent Hershey
12:42
This season - Bradley. With the partial demolition of that staff, I think it's more likely Taj comes up, they keep him in the rotation and he shows what he did in the first stint. Walker still has to deal with all those OFers in StL. Sure seems logical they make a trade to open up a spot, but not guaranteed. That question for 2023 is enough to pose more doubt about Walker's immediate future impact.
Beyond? Give me the stud hitter in a (traditionally) stable org with great player development who is also a freakish athlete over the (don't get me wrong) very talented pitching prospect.
Fascinating stories going on in both cases that are worth following, though.

Hi Brent, Any chance we may see Dylan Bundy pitch for the Mets this year?
Brent Hershey
12:43
I'm saying there's a chance, cause crazy stuff happens.

Is Bello going to keep up th pace?. can Bradish keep this up? Has Leody figured it out? is Ezeiquial Duran going to play regularly now that Seager is back? and the other Duran for red sox legit? Thank you
Brent Hershey
12:47
Very efficient questioning, Will! Briefly ..
Bello - not at quite this pace but have been a believer and think he'll be a rotation member most if not all of the season and provide value
Bradish - like him, but still a matchup play and definitely a tier below Bello. Good ingredients, tho, and maybe he surpasses expectations
Leody - batted ball metrics early on hint at yes. With his pedigree, I"m interested tho feel like the ceiling is a bit lower
Duran - think they will find places to plug him in all over; but AB with go down
Duran Sox - yes; finally putting it together, would not be surprised if he's BoSox CF rest of the year. Like his 2023 more than Leody's.
You're welcome.

Hi Brent! As always, thanks for doing these.
  1. Time to cut bait on Winker?
  2. On Will Myers?
  3. Will M Castro get the closers job in AZ?
Brent Hershey
12:48
As always, tough to give helpful answers w/o any context. But let's say Yes to all.

12:50
When do you see Gavin Williams or Bobby Miller getting a rotation spot?
Brent Hershey
12:50
Barring injury, expect both to debut in '23. But once they do, it's unlikely that both hold a rotation spot through the end of the season, given orgs, injuries, workloads, etc. Great long-term futures, though.

12:51
Best long-term dynasty bench stash with streamer possibilities: Griffin Canning, Braxton Garrett, David Peterson, Tylor Megill?
Brent Hershey
12:51
Garrett, handily -- though underlying skills love Peterson also despite the surface stats.
HarrytheK
12:53
Take a chance on starting David Peterson vs. Nats today or is it too risky? Like the K and win potential and his peripherals say he deserves better luck.
Brent Hershey
12:53
You called? :-)  I also have this option a couple places, but am not sure just yet. Nats actually sneaky-good vs. LHP. But yes, periphs say better times ahead.
Rick
12:55
Vaughn has been disappointing. I think LaRussa set him back when he was there, but what are your expectations going forward? How would you rank him long-term compared to N.Lowe, Tellez, Kirilloff, and Manzardo? Thanks
