The moderator for today's discussion, Shiv Aroor, kick-starts the panel discussion by explaining why this topic is relevant today. With several journalists being labelled 'anti-national' and 'presstitute' for critiquing the government, Aroor asks if there is now a collision between ideas of patriotism and journalism.
4:58
Speaking about her own experience as a journalist, Suhasini Haidar says, "Yes, most Journalists face this problem. It should not be Journalism vs Patriotism.  It's more like patriotism vs Nationalism and protecting the country from these 'nationalists'." Se added that for a journalist, the story always comes first.

When asked how he deals with this sort of pushback while working on his stories, Ajai Shukla says, "You run out of sentiments" he says. According to Ajai, You can't allow someone to define nationalism for you. "We're masters of our own Nationalism we have the right to choose our paths when it comes to Nationalism."

Citing an instance from his own career, Nitin Gokhale said, "I was stationed in Guwhati during the Kargil war. In the middle of the conflict, I walked up to my editor, asking him to publish story but I was told to wait. After the war, the Vajpayee government didn't want the story to be published."

Addressing Maria's comments on nationalism, Shiv further asks, "The idea of natinalism is used to preempt stories and discredit journalists, is that a pressure on a journalist or does it act as a shadow on your stories?"
5:14
"The shadow over journalists today is that there will inevitably lead to backlash. The more we personalize stories and play into hands of the establishment, the more we attack our own credibility," Suhasini says in response.

Shiv asks Maria how she fights such conflicts as a CEO of a digital news platform. It's not just journalism for Maria but the survival of the entire digital platform that solely depend on stories.
"Is there a conflict in your mind in the execution of the stories?"

"Title of the panel is off because in the end the values if journalism fonts change.
Journalism has been pushed to this space where we've to decide whether," Maria responds.
