Meg Rowley FanGraphs Chat - 11/20/18
powered byJotCast
Meg Rowley
2:00
Hello, and welcome to the chat! A moment while I communicate with a writer of FanGraphs dot com.
2:02
Ok, hello, here I am. A Meg ready to chat!
John

How worried should teams be about harper’s defense?
Meg Rowley
2:04
I think anytime you're going to give potentially $300 million to a free agent, you worry about everything. It has been identified as a weaker part of his game, and defense declines over time, but I don't think it will alter the eventual value a tremendous amount.
2:05
The evaluation of defense is one of the places where the gap between public side analysis and team's internal stuff is the biggest. Which isn't to say that the assessment of Harper is wrong. But it is a place where they know a lot more than we do.
Nate
2:05
Are you on record with where you think Harper winds up?
Meg Rowley
2:06
Increasingly intrigued by Philly. I think Machado ends up in New York, which is part of it, too.

Just a comment- The M's are going to be very happy with Justus Sheffield. He's gonna be the real thing.
Meg Rowley
2:06
Seems like they agree with you!

Given the recent departure of Carson for the Blue Jays, what team do you think you will eventually leave Fangraphs for? Any preferences?
Meg Rowley
2:07
Appreciating that we are often surprised by this stuff, I don't ever see that as my move, which I am just saying to let David Appelman be less stressed over the holidays.
I really love writing and editing, and am neither an applied math major nor a programmer.
2:08
If a team wants to know how their roster construction relates to Foucault, though, I am their gal, so watch out.

What are your feelings on the Mariners' rebuild thusfar?
Meg Rowley
2:09
That there is likely a great deal more to come, that I hope that great deal more waits until after Thanksgiving, that I'm glad they've picked a mode.
2:10
Also, and I appreciate the many ways in which this was unavoidable but, it is sort of weird that this crew gets to move franchise pieces while an MLB investigation is looming over them.

Please reassure me that the Mets are not about to trade Noah Syndergaard for a handful of magic beans. I'm feeling I'll thinking about it.
Meg Rowley
2:10
It definitely won't be for beans if it happens, and you can quote me on that.
Ryan
2:10
Will you still be doing weekly chats? Can will still expect monthly DaynCasts?
Meg Rowley
2:11
Yes to chats, TBD on Dayn.
Dayn and I are twitter pals, but our friendship is not so deep that he would feel fully comfortable swearing at me as he did with Carson. We'll see if we can catch a wild Dayn now and again, though.

Is it just my own internal biases, or does every trade the Yankees makes seem hopelessly tilted in the Yankees favor...like the one they just made for Paxton.
Meg Rowley
2:12
Hopelessly tilted is too strong in my opinion. The return outside of Sheffield struck many (myself included) as a little light, but this was in no way embarrassing.
2:13
And while I wish Paxton the very best, and think the durability stuff is a bit overblown, it isn't non-existent.

Do Pirate fans have anyone to get excited about in their farm
Meg Rowley
2:13
Tune in after the holiday, when the Pirates list goes live, to find out!

2:14
Y'all didn't have an Adrian Beltre retirement article in the hopper?
Meg Rowley
2:14
Craig Edwards is working away as we speak

2:14
About the fangraphs hoodies - might we see a pullover option sometime soon?
Meg Rowley
2:14
I will ask!

Meg Rowley
2:15
I mean, this isn't surprising as justification, even if we find that justification silly.
2:16
Also, I'm not sure there is a ton to be gained from going after this dude. Like sure, silly. A goof! But it seems, at least to me, like a weird thing to spend emotional energy on.
And I spend emotional energy on some goofy-ass things.

When the off-season is over, which team goes into 2019 with the best starting rotation?
Meg Rowley
2:18
Hmmmm assuming moves/re-signings, I'd be inclined to say Astros?
2:19
Dodgers in there, too. Cleveland assuming they don't trade a bunch of guys for some dumb reason.

2:19
Why is the winter so damn long? Surely it must be March already?
Meg Rowley
2:20
It is ok to miss things. Missing things is nice. You appreciate things so much more once you've missed them.
Josh

Cashman and Dipoto have made a handful of trades over the past few years, and some of them have been for spare pieces (Nick Rumbelow, James Pazos etc...) Do you think that GM's tend to call GM's they're more comfortable with or is it just a coincidence?
