My thing is just a minor inconvenience.

Did you make a deal with Manny so he would break the news on your chat day?
Meg Rowley
2:17
It would be so cool if I had that sort of sway, but I very much do not.

Meg, nowthat Padres are clearly "going for it" will they still engage in service time foolishness with Tatis Jr.?
Meg Rowley
2:19
The incentives haven't changed, and they likely will determine a few weeks won't make the difference in their run this year, so I'd think we won't see him for a bit.
(that the incentives exist doesn't make following them mandatory or good, to be clear)
Person with a non-Manny question
2:21
Ethical dilemma: as a fan of a team with an MLB-ready top prospect, should I actually want the team to have him on the OD roster, as opposed to waiting a couple of weeks? Big picture, it is probably better for the team and for me to wait, right, given the terms of the current CBT that both sides agreed to? If the player breaks camp with the team and the team loses an extra year of control, then it benefits the player more than the team. As a fan, I like individual players, but am more connected to the team as a whole. Shouldn’t I be rooting for what is best for the team? I am empathetic to the players, not sympathetic to the owners, and think that Rob Manfred is a component bacterium in the sweaty ooze of the sports-industrial complex. But I like my team, and I want them to win-- and working within the rules to keep their best players as long as possible should help them win. Can I feel OK about this? What are your thoughts?
Meg Rowley
2:22
I think that we should remember how few teams are pushing up against the CBT. I think we should also remember that there is a mechanism through which teams can try to keep their prospects around: they can sign them to extensions.
2:23
Sometimes, those extensions even end up coming at a slight discount to the team.
2:24
Manipulating service time isn't the only option, it's just the best option if an organization doesn't want to pay players a market rate.
I think as fans of the game should push back pretty hard on the notion that this is good for the game, or for teams.
I'm not a Blue Jays fan, but I imagine I'd have enjoyed last year a hell of a lot more if I'd been able to watch Vlad Jr.
2:25
I'm not a Mets fan, but I would feel pretty squirmy about how Peter Alonso is lined up to probably never get the deal his play will merit.
2:26
I am still ostensibly a Mariners fan, and the idea of them messing around with JP Crawford does make me like the team less.

Your response to hearing that Machado would be signing in San Diego for 10/300 would best be described as a) excited b) relieved or c) indifferent?
Meg Rowley
2:27
somewhere between a) and b)
It doesn't fix the market by any wild stretch, but him getting underpaid would just make it worse.
here goes nothing
2:28
Which player blocked on a depth chart do you really want to see get enough playing time this year to really sink or swim? Mine is Andrew Toles.
Meg Rowley
2:28
The answer is Daniel Vogelbach, and I will accept no alternatives.

Is Meg short for Megashark vs Crocosaurus?
Meg Rowley

Yes, my parents are very strange.

What do you thing the value of the opt-out is in Manny's deal, i.e what would the Padres have had to offer to remove that?
Meg Rowley
2:29
This is a very good question that I need to noodle on. Opt outs aren't what they used to be, but then again, Manny Machado isn't like most baseball players.

T/F: this chat will be Fangraphs' all-time high-water mark for share of Padres-related content.
Meg Rowley
2:30
Probably true, although I think them signing Dave probably gave it a surprising run for its money

For Philadelphia, would they be better served by backing up a dump truck of cash for Harper, or maybe looking for some smaller upgrades and keeping their options open for the trade deadline?
Meg Rowley
2:32
I am of the opinion that if you can retain the services of Bryce Harper for mostly just money, you should always do that.

Before/After on Bryce Harper signing now is Feb 24(Sunday).  Which side you taking?
Meg Rowley

I'll be optimistic and say before

Tacos, beer, beaches, military, a now a $300mil baseball player. What doesn't SD have?
Meg Rowley
2:33
Could still use some pitching, to be honest.

Out of curiosity, based on your comment above, what do you believe would repair the very bad free-agent market, from the players perspective?
Meg Rowley
2:33
A new CBA that retools when players get money, has higher minimum salaries, and makes service time manipulation harder.

Odds of Harper signing with the Padres as well?
Meg Rowley
2:34
Very, very low.

Better team in 2019, SF or SD?
Meg Rowley
2:36
Assuming today's rosters, SD eventually. Depends on when the reinforcements arrive from the minors, but SD.

Small market teams (Marlins, Padres) giving out the biggest contracts only to see the big market teams take on these contracts 2-3 years into the deal. I don't wanna hear about small market disadvantages. Royals, Orioles, Pirates, etc. They CAN compete!  They choose not to!
Meg Rowley
2:38
I think it is probably useful to differentiate between low revenue and small market (I don't think the San Diego media market is as small as KC for instance) and budgets differ, etc etc, but yes, there is clearly more capacity to spend than we are seeing deployed in the market.

Is the new market inefficiency spending money?
