Hi everyone, and welcome to the chat!

What's your opinion on the suggestion of lowering the mound/ moving it back?
Meg Rowley
2:02
I think two feet is super aggressive, and is probably a bad idea.
The effect it'll have on perceived velocity is likely to be pretty significant, and I'm not convinced the league has a great handle on just how significant.

How much money will Trout demand? Over/under $375 million?
Meg Rowley
2:03
Over. He should demand the over.
He's the best player in baseball. I'd imagine $400 is where it starts.

Are you surprised Harper didn't ask for opt outs in case Vegas gets a team and he decides to play at home?
Meg Rowley
2:04
Really committing to the Marvel bit, eh?
2:05
He talked about wanting the security of a place, and not having to go through another round of free agent speculation. I think that is likely to have been thought to be significantly more valuable than the option to reenter the market on the off chance that Vegas gets a team.

Do you expect Giancarlo to be closer to the 2017 or 2018 version of himself this season?
Meg Rowley
2:07
2018. I think the strikeout dip was aberrant; 2018 is closer to what he actually is. Which, that's a valuable player, especially without the down start/finish.

Hi Meg. Thanks for doing these chats. Is Jeff relocating to Tampa, or does he get to work from home and wait for the Rays to move to PDX. Thanks!
Meg Rowley
2:08
I can't speak to the Rays' Portland plans, but as he mentioned in his various goodbyes, he isn't relocating.

Is the 2-foot long chicken tender, dubbed "Fowl Pole", coming soon at Rangers games peak ballpark food or a poultry-based metaphor that American profligacy knows no bounds?
Meg Rowley

When I saw the photo, the most horrifying part of it was the degree to which it looked like a baguette. A chicken baguette. We sometimes make a very poor case that we deserve to survive as a species.

Hey Meg!  Was wondering if you had an update on the Fans Scouting Report?  Love seeing that every year and heard a few weeks ago it was nearly ready
Meg Rowley

I will pester Appelman about it. With various site things, we got a bit distracted but I'll follow up.

Have you ever fell “out of love” for the game? What re-invigorated your interest? If none of this, what keeps your interest? Thanks!
Meg Rowley
2:11
I've been watching baseball in person for a week now and it had a perhaps concerning impact on my mood.
2:12
I didn't care for how fussy Manfred was about the tone of the discourse of over the offseason (whose fault is that, Rob?) but he was right about one thing: the games make a difference.
The best thing that can happen for baseball is for there to be baseball.
Baseball owns in a profound way.

How sad is it that Dallas Keuchal doesn't have a home?
Meg Rowley
2:13
It isn't great, but given some of the injuries we've seen in the last little bit/holes on existing teams, seems perhaps likely to resolve soon, though likely for less than he was expecting.

*when do we get the new hires* whiney voice
Meg Rowley
2:14
Very soon! They'll be announced this week. Possibly tomorrow!

Thoughts on Raleigh's bid for an MLB team? Would rather see the Rays end up there than Portland.
Meg Rowley
2:15
The east coast has plenty of teams. Portland would allow for a regional rivalry with Seattle, two cities who enjoy being in competition, and another West Coast option.
That would be my preference.

For myriad reasons, I've kind of fallen out of love with baseball over the past few years. It has nothing to do with team fandom -- my childhood club has done rather well. There's just something about getting older and jaded plus having a tech-fueled lower attention span. My question: If you were hired by MLB to market the game so as not to lose people like me, how would you go about it?  What's the big selling point?
Meg Rowley
2:16
The players have never been better than they are now. We are watching the very best the game has ever had, and many of them are young and charming, and stupidly talented. I think I'd try to make it as affordable to go to a game as possible, and just invite folks to spend a Sunday in the ballpark, when the weather is good. It'll be like seeing a friend you haven't in a long while.

Meg! Love this chat, what are your thoughts on Moose trying out 2B?
Meg Rowley
2:18
That the Brewers do a lot of cool, weird stuff, and that it has looked fine enough in spring so far.

I am very happy about the how the EW cohost situation turned out. If Jeff had to leave, this is the best outcome.
Meg Rowley
2:19
I'm so glad you think so. I am very excited, and selfishly (and this is meant with no disrespect toward Jeff, who was also great) I'm thrilled to get to listen to Sam on EW again.
2:20
We've been really overwhelmed by how kind and supportive listeners have been since the announcement. I'm so glad that folks are pleased.

Moving the mound seems dumb since it'd also need to get moved back at the college, high school and aau levels
Meg Rowley
2:20
This is the other thing. Are there going to be differences? That seems pretty nutty.
2:22
Teams have developed pitching with this distance in mind. I can't imagine they are pleased. I'd rather let hitters catch up (and the player dev strategies around hitters catch up) than do this. If you're going to make a change, something much smaller seems much more workable.
