Meg Rowley FanGraphs Chat - 6/19/18

Gonna be writing about this post-chat. It's not done (it is June 19) but it is far more settled than any of us expected and with an unexpected team!

Best and worst uniforms in MLB?
Meg Rowley
12:22
This is a matter of personal preference. Ok? This is what I, me, Meg like personally. You are free to like other things. But...
12:23
I have a take which is that I don't like uniforms without names on the back. I think it is vaguely gatekeeping of new folks to the sport, and incentivizes us to root for ownership rather than labor, and also makes merchandizing weird later.
12:24
I like the Dodgers uniforms a lot. They're quite sharp. Beyond that, various throw-backs.

How would a Portland team effect the Mariners fan base?
Meg Rowley
12:25
I know there are rules about teams in proximate geographic areas being able to nix expansion, so I would imagine the league and the Mariners would have to feel comfortable that it wouldn't be a bad thing. I think having a local rival would be great, and the hipsterish nature of the insults would be hilarious.

Soto HR counts on the previous game date before he was even called up. Have there been any weird things like this before?
Meg Rowley
12:25
Indeed-- let me see if I can find a tweet.
12:27
Drat, those Cespedes Boys tweet so dang much, I can't find it. I thought they had a tweet about it. It isn't unprecedented. It is quite weird.

The playoff odds page puts the Astros at 105 wins. Do you think they get there?
Meg Rowley
12:28
I think they could, which is insane. Terrifying. Effervescent. Astros.
Astros PR call me.

12:28
Heard a rumor we might be an expansion target? Pourquoi pas, non?
Meg Rowley
12:28
I'd think Montreal would be ahead of Quebec?

How many RSVP’s have you gotten for Friday?
Meg Rowley
12:29
Without FanGraphs staff, and I can't believe I am about to gift you lovely monsters this, we have 69.

Which team do you think makes the best use of front office-driven analytics for on-the-field decisions? What can other teams do better to emulate them?
Meg Rowley
12:30
Hmmm, it's a good question. I think this has flattened out substantially.
And there probably isn't a ton of difference between the best and the worst anymore.
12:31
The best thing for improving this stuff is always having open communication between the manager and field staff and the front office, but perhaps more important than that is finding ways to talk to players about it in a way that is convincing.

lets have a hypothetical, Juan Soto homered in a game before his debut, therefore his service clock should start from the original game date, which would likely get him to super 2 status down the road.  ridiculous but...could it work?
Meg Rowley
12:32
I don't think so. As weird as it is, it is primarily a score keeping concern.

Brandon Nimmo sustainable?  Brandon Nimmo all-star??  Brandon Nimmo Mike Trout???
Meg Rowley
12:32
Yes. Maybe. Relax.

The Mariners are obviously going to make a trade before the deadline. Can they use Vogelsong to get anything useful?
Meg Rowley
12:34
Fun fact: the Mariners have so many old "wait, he's still in the league?" guys floating around that for a brief moment, I thought, "Huh, did Vogelsong unretire and I missed it?"
12:35
I think the Mariners may try for a trade (another starter sure would be helpful) but they don't have a ton to move, and I don't know that Vogelbach (actual active player!) would net much.

good morning! thanks for chatting. what do you think the reds should do with scooter gennett? trade him at the deadline or try to sign long term? relatedly, i hope they can find a way to bring up senzel soon, he seems ready.
Meg Rowley
12:36
As always, this stuff depends on return. I wouldn't be surprised if they move him, but nor will I be surprised if he ends up sticking around. That's a cheap answer in a way, but also? An honest one.
12:37
And I think they'll bring up Senzel when it allows them to hold on to him for the longest time. Also when he is "fully healthy."

Where does "Like a good Gleyber, Torres is there!" rank on the all-time worst home run calls?
Meg Rowley
12:37
Music is so subjective. You wouldn't believe some of the crap on my gym playlist.

I feel that brewers sentiment of a 1-15 stretch applies to Mariners fans as well. Still waiting for that shoe to drop.
