Do you ever feel bad for the way you treated Terry Shields?
Mike White
11:30
No. He deserved to be pounded. That dang Shields. ... But he is enjoying retirement life. Golfs more than Rory McIlroy - or Gerry Dulac.

Big win for Coach Palko and the Blue Devils! But am not sure what to think of SV? 1-3 with a somewhat close win over winless CMAC but played PCC tough. And I guess maybe I'm wondering about PCC too. More hype than contender for either/both of them?
Mike White
11:32
It was questionable if Mt. Lebanon and Palko could crack the top 4 in 6A at some point. Looks like they have. Central's defense is still really good. They have offensive weapons, but offense hasn't been overly impressive in a few games. Can't figure out Seneca. Defense had looked so good and then gave up a lot of points to Mt. Lebano. Lebo at North Allegheny this week. Post-Gazette Game of the Week.

Will Steel Valley turn around their season after being 0-3?
Mike White
11:34
Me thinks it is going to be a long season for defending WPIAL 2A champs. The cupboard is bare right now for Ray Braszo. They have a couple easier games left, but Steel Valley has scored only 6 points so far. Ouch.

What are your thoughts about Next season, when a lot of Refs Retire and others dont come back because of clearances.  PIAA/WPIAL purposed games on Thur/Fri/Sat  and 5 man Ref Crews
Mike White
11:37
I do not officials personal intentions of whether they will come back or not. Believe it or not, I haven't asked any if they're coming back. By saying WPIAL/PIAA "purposed" Thursday and Saturday games, do you mean proposed??? I don't know anything about that, either. I doubt whether high schools will want to leave Friday night football. But I will say lack of officials continues to be a big problem for all high school sports. And an even bigger problem for middle school and junior high. Guys who might be 21 to 30 really don't want to officiate. Can't say I blame them for the abuse they sometimes have to take from parents and fans.

Only SV and NA would be double some of the bigger 5A schools, hate that excuse.  Pine is one of the smallest 6A but compete.#nofear
Mike White
11:42
All nine of the 6A schools have at least 628 boys in top three grades. Four have 700 or more. Eleven of the 5A schools have 450 or fewer. So basically, all 6A schools have at least 200 more boys in top three grades than half of the WPIAL 5A schools. Enough said. Might not be double all of them, but that's still a pretty big difference.

Why wont the WPIAL let Farrell back in?  Think theyd do well here?
Mike White
11:42
PIAA has to let them out of District 10.

Do you think Ben Jackson from West Greene would be able to put up numbers like that at a bigger school?
Mike White
11:44
I have not seen Ben Jackson play. No, he would probably not have 20 touchdowns and averaging 20 yards a carry in 5A or 6A. So what. Just give him his due and say he's a really good player. He's 6-1, 220. It's not like he's 5-5, 130. Obviously the kid can play some. His coach told me some Ivy and other FCS schools are interested. So he must be pretty good.

Do you think Bethel is a contender in 5A?
Mike White
11:45
Without a doubt, yes. Lot of kids back from last year. They seem to be playing well. Anthony Chiccitt playing well. One of best stories in WPIAL, beating cancer. I could see them going far in playoffs. But 5A is so good, they could also get bounced maybe even in quarterfinals.

Who is going to beat Sto Ron in single A with that spread offense
Mike White
11:46
I saw Sto-Rox Friday. I was impressed. They had a few guys out. It wouldn't surprise me if they won WPIAL. But who is going to beat them? Well, they only beat Cornell, 28-25. Yes, they're good but far from unbeatable. Really interesting game Oct. 18 at Laurel.

When does the City League join the WPIAL?
Mike White
11:48
They haven't wanted to. They are in the WPIAL in some sports like boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, tennis. I'd love to see City play in WPIAL in basketball. But in a lot of their sports, it would be hard for them to contend in WPIAL. A number of their teams that are in WPIAL now in some sports struggle mightily.
Alex
11:49
Do you think Burrell will make the playoffs this year for the first time since 2012?
Mike White
11:49
Should we bet a Buc on it? Wooooo hooooo. I'll be here all week. ... On the serious side, I say they don't make it.
Teh
11:49
Does Albert Gallatin ever intend on rejoining the WPIAL or are they going 8 man football?
Mike White
11:49
They said they would see how it goes as an independent for a few years and then reassess.

This week Penn Trafford comes to Ohio to play Massillon Washington.  What (opinions) are the FB strengths of Penn Trafford i.e. offense? defense?  MW is 3-0 against average competition.  Go Warriors.
Mike White
11:51
Well the biggest thing for Penn-Trafford right now is health. Top two RBs were lost last week with injuries. I don't know their status. Losing Lisbon would be a big loss. I love what John Ruane has done there. They always play so physical. I think they can give Massillon a game. This isn't Paul Brown's or your father's Massillon.

Are there any WPIAL schools that are under a coop arrangement with another school for football?  We are seeing more of these coops in District 9 to help dwindling rosters and still keep the sport at each school.
Mike White
11:52
I know Lincoln Park coops with Western Beaver. I would have to think if there any others. There might be one or two.

Mike, so who is getting the last 2 playoff spots in the 2A Interstate Conference? Southmoreland, Charleroi, Carmichaels, Brownsville or Beth Center?McGuffey and Washington will get the top 2 seeds from that conference imo.
Mike White
11:53
Southmoreland and Charleroi. The Scotties will beat Brownsville this week which pretty much clinches a spot for them - unless some tomato can beats all the top teams in the last five weeks.

So Dudek is good enough for Pitt but not Penn State?  hmmm....more PSU bias in the PG
Mike White
11:56
I have no idea what you're talking about. Someone asked me if Pitt should've offered Zane Dudek. Go back and look.  Nobody said anything about Penn State.  So please stop with stupid bias claims. Here was my answer:  "I don't think Pitt would've been wrong to offer. Would've been kind of neat how he would've done." Where was Penn State mentioned?

Who wins in a wrestling match, Steve Rotstein or Brad Everett?
Mike White
11:57
Well, Rotty is a City kid who claims he used to wrestle. But Brad has that West Mifflin cred. Rotstein might jump off a turnbuckle, though, and damage Big Brad. Brad would have some kind of foreign object in the ring, though.
Alex
11:57
Do you think Apollo-Ridge will be a top 2 seed in the 2A Allegheny Conference at the end of the season?
Mike White
11:58
Like I said above, I think the winner of this week's Apollo-Ridge vs. Avonworth game wins the conference. And I'll take Avonworth and one of the WPIAL's best names - Park Penrod.
11:59
Hey everyboy, gotta go and tape our This Week In High School Sports Show with Rotstein and Everett, if they're not wrestling. We'll do this again next Tuesday at 11 a.m.
