Ready to go. Sorry for delay. We have four WPIAL champions crowned. Two more this weekend. Meanwhile, Pine-Richland and South Fayette start PIAA play.

Mike,  Pat Carey & North Hills seem to think the forward pass is against the rule.  He has yet to win a playoff game at NH. With such an archaic offense is there any hope NH ever wins that elusive first round game?
Mike White
12:04
They didn't throw the ball much this year. Or at all. Sometimes you don't have the personnel to "throw."

It’s Indians vs Indians Saturday...which tribe ya got?
Mike White
12:04
No idea what game you are referring to?

Great match up Friday night @ Norwin HS between PH and WA. Will the Indians match the heart that Palko and the boys showed last week?
Mike White
12:06
First off, where is the statue going at West Allegheny for Bob Palko? Oh, they're not planning one. Well they should. This game is exactly like playing Gateway. Similar teams. Penn Hills has more individual talent. But more individual talent doesn't always win out. But let's give West Allegheny some credit. It's not like they're a bunch of munchkins with no talent. They have some kids who can play some, too. That being said I'll take Penn Hills. But Penn Hills better not make mistakes. Gateway made some key ones.

WPIAL may want to consider playing title games at Highmark in the future. I know I'd rather play on a turf field to a capacity crowd than in 90% empty stadium on grass. What do you think Michael?
Mike White
12:08
This is discussed and debated over and over and over. The kids like playing at Heinz Field. Everybody likes it. Playing at Highmark will not help attendance at all. Plus, people don't realize Highmark isn't big enough for some of the games. There will be games at Heinz. Get used to it.

Sorry I meant Friday...

OK. I answered above.

does pine win 6a state title
Mike White
12:09
They could. Better be careful of State College, though. Pine should win but State College is good. Maybe better than some recent years. Then it's most likely St. Joseph's Prep. I would say it would be close. But if you make me choose right now, I'd take St. Joe's. But that could change in a week.

I know that there have been some really good teams every year in the WPIAL and there are teams that seem to always win that big game that no one thought that they should win.  In your opinion, who has the best coaching staff in the WPIAL?  The staff that always puts the best game plans together week to week to always put their team in the best position to win.  Who is that staff?
Mike White
12:10
I can't answer that. Many good staffs. There are good staffs at schools that don't win championships also. Palko's at West Allegheny is among the best. They've been there a long time, they know their stuff, they motivate - and they have fun.

Thoughts on Gipson opening his recruitment up? Obviously he flourished with the change in coaches.  Is he P5 material (i.e do you see Pitt offering soon)?
Mike White
12:12
He announced on Twitter last night that he is backing out of Ball State commitment. I talked to him Saturday. He has no idea what will happen with Pitt. I have no idea, either. Rutgers also offered. Honestly, he seemed to like possibility of Rutgers. But if Pitt would offer, my guess is he would probably take it.

Central Catholic lost almost all of their major rotation in basketball after last year. The only major returners are Maurice Shipman, and Brian Dzuban. How do you think they’ll fare in that tough north section?
Mike White
12:13
They'll be like all Central teams. Play man to man, play a lot of kids and be right there for a playoff spot. Going in, I'd say Butler, NA and Pine are the top three teams in that section. Then comes other three. But Central is always Central.

12:13
Since Jack McCurry retired, North Hills Football has been irrelevant. No playoff victories and no section championships. Any chance North Hills looks to breath some life into the program by bringing in a new coach? Someone like Arrington, Kappas, or Kasperowicz?
Mike White
12:14
Lot of North Hills questions. I don't know of any changes. Pat Carey is fine and I don't think he's going anywhere.

Mike, I wish I could have answered Animal's Highmark vs. Heinz question.  Let's see, do kids want to play on the same field that Big Ben and AB play on or the field that Sean McGillicuddy of the Riverhounds plays on?  Thank You.
Mike White
12:14
Hey, don't dis McGillicuddy if you don't you know him.

who will emerge as top teams in 5a and 6a for the upcoming hoops season
Mike White
12:16
6A going in I'd go Butler, Latrobe, North Allegheny, Pine as top teams. Mt. Lebanon also. 5A Moon and Mars definitely tops but you have to wonder what about Penn Hills and Woodland Hills moving down.

At the TJ SF game some questionable coaching from TJ. On defense they only were rushing three players giving the SF quarterback plenty of time to throw. And why the short kickoffs was that intentional or was the kicker hurt?
Mike White
12:18
Maybe they thought drop more guys on defense. Plus, it's hard to get pressure on South Fayette sometimes because of quick drops and they get the ball out quick. It's not like all 5-step drops. As for kickoffs, I have no idea. Maybe they were trying to keep the ball away from someone.

What are your thoughts on Belle Vernon next year?
Mike White
12:22
They have a lot of kids back. Beginning of year should be TJ 1 and BV 2
12:23
Well I don't know who you talk to. I know I've spoken to a lot of kids and they would much rather play at Heinz than Highmark 365 days a year.

Can Wilmington win it all this year?  Thank you.
Mike White
12:35
Wilmington very good but I wouldn't make them the favorite. Remember, there's still Southern Columbia on the other side of the state and Wilmington in the quarterfinals this week. Should win and then play WPIAL champ. Until someone beats SC, I'll go with them.

Thoughts on 6A front runners next year? Who is the early front runners. Pine loses a lot of great line, NA some good skill coming back. Central seems to be also loaded again especially def ? Thoughts
Mike White
12:36
Same old, same old. The BIg 3 of NA, Central, Pine heading into season.

I see SF has to travel to Erie last year TJ had to go there I  thought the games had to rotate every year.
Mike White
12:36
It used to be that way, but remember in 13 and 14 WPIAL champ in AAA played Erie or District 10 rep at North Allegheny. So there have been back to back both ways.

WPIAL needs to allow 3.5 hours between start times playing 4 games in a day at Heinz. Last game did not kick off till after 9:00. I attended last game & did not get back to Zelienople till after 1:00 am. Much too late even on a Saturday night. Your thoughts about start times?
Mike White
12:38
I agree. 3 hours is not enough. Never has been. But it's not the time in between games. It's playing 4 in one day and starting at 11 a.m. They used to start at 10:30. That would be better, but starting that early might hurt some attendance. Of course, not many people are ever at that first game. I agree that 9 p.m. start is not good. But if you want as many games as you can at Heinz, you'll have to deal with a late start.

2A championship game...steel valley blew out freedom and south side beaver ran for nearly 400 yards while limiting charleroi's offense in a 26-21 win.  Rematch that steel valley won earlier game big.  Can ssb keep it close or over by half?
Mike White
12:39
Steel Valley beat South Side Beaver 53-6 the first time in regular-season finale. I can see South Side making it close but not winning. But great job by coach Luke Travelpiece and staff getting Rams this far.
