It's a money thing. AT&T loses money every year. That's OK for them, because they like doing games and they think it's good community service. But they have been losing too much. If losses could be cut at least some, they might re-consider. A little birdie on my roof told me after I wrote the story last week, some things started to happen. The birdie said it is now not a "done" deal that AT&T won't do them. Honestly, I don't see another station doing them. People don't realize what it costs to do live four games - and to do them from Heinz Field. There are costs associated at Heinz.

Mike, is there really going to be anyone in 3A to compete with the Quips this season? Seems they should "walk" straight to Heinz and maybe meet North Catholic for some type of "competitive" game.

They are clearly the No. 1 team in 3A. They are very good. What else is new? However, who would've thought that Quaker Valley would rise up and knock off Quips last year. Maybe someone will emerge. I think Quaker will still be decent. Quaker has interesting game Friday with Central Valley. But right now, Quips are Shampoo team - head and shoulders above rest. I still want to see how good Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic is. Oooops. I mean North Catholic.
They have always been North Catholic to me and most people anyway.

I agree with 6A with the exception of NA. Have to see more of them, but what I saw BP do them with a good def line last year not sure they will hold up to Pine and PCC when those studs come to play. BP absolutely killed their off line last year and they are not pine or pcc. PCC and Pine going to be a great game winner?

Believe me, North Allegheny is going to be good.

Can CV pull the upset over West A this weekend?
Mike White
11:50
No. They have no chance. They shouldn't even show up. .... A few things. Char Valley is certainly better than a year ago.  Ringgold is not good, so we don't really know that much yet about Char Valley. And this won't be West A's best team. But they're still West A. I'll still take West A.

What happened to Seton last week looks like KO rolled over them? Thought they contenders this year?
Mike White
11:53
Well, I think KO is going to be good. Maybe they could be the Quaker Valley of this year in 3A. Seton lost a lot of pretty good skill players from last year. But Seton moved from 3A to 2A. That will help. And Seton's conference is ... let's just say it is not a haven for strong teams. I would be a little surprised if Seton doesn't win that conference.

I think it'll be a long time (if ever) before we see another season with a Jurkovec, Saxton, and Walker.  Who do you have as the next man up to make some (or even a fraction) of the noise that those guys made?
Mike White
11:55
He's certainly not on Jurkovec's level. But I'll just talk statistics. Tyler Bradley of OLSH just went over 5,000 yards last week. He'll easily go over 6,000 this year. And 7,000 is a possibility for him also. Gotta look at this Jack Salopek from Norwin also. He threw for 2,000 as a sophomore. Pitt has offered. Had a big first game. So he might have a lot of yards by the time he's done also. But please. I am not saying he is in Jurkovec class.

The private/public school debate comes around every year --- I know Philly has their Catholic League, but what really could Western PA do if they really wanted to separate the types of schools? Not enough Catholic schools to field a league - and if they did it would be Central and then everybody else....

It could be done. A big school division for privates and a small school division. If you really wanted to do it, those schools could play in regular conference with rest of WPIAL in regular season. Then they separate for the playoffs. For example, Central would always play Erie Prep for the Western Pa. championship and the right to go to the states. So you would have to play them in regular WPIAL during regular season.

Well that's it for now. Merry football season everyone.  All high school teams play this weekend. And start of college. Be good.
