Any word on Troy Lanier from Baldwin.  You mention him all the time in your posts.
Mike White

He's eligible. I don't know of any WPIAL hearing, which is surprising. No one contested it. But I haven't seen his name appear among leading scorers.

It seems that kids/parents are spending considerably more time/money on year round youth sports than 35 years ago when you started covering high school sports. Does it show on the field/court or are they wasting time?
Mike White
11:39
They're definitely spending more money. Lots of it. High school kids spending time with personal trainers also has gone way up. Has it helped? Well, in football I don't think there's any doubt that kids today are bigger than 40-50 years ago. That trend started maybe 25 years ago or so. Are they faster? Well I'll say that the college and pro guys who are bigger are also faster than 40-50 years ago. The personal training? It certainly can't help. Will make you stronger. But even if you are bigger and stronger, bottom line is: Can you play?

Is Ringgold a legit threat in 4A?
Mike White
11:41
Hard to say. Section is weak. But give credit to the venerable Phil Pergola. Hung in through some tough years and now I think they are 9-1. As I said before, I don't think 4A is very strong, as far as the number of quality teams. No doubt that Quaker Valley is best. After losing in WPIAL final past two years, maybe this is year that QV does it and Mike Mastroianni gets title No. 3 (one at QB and one at Bethel Park).

I see your comments about Ringgold and actually think Knoch could be a sleeper team in 4A.  Big game tonight between them and Highlands.
Mike White
11:44
Knoch is OK, but I still think Quaker Valley is the top. Ambridge intrigues me, though. Ambridge and Quaker Valley next Tuesday. And next Tuesday is the best night of the season for big games. Also have Lebo-USC, Sewickley-OLSH, Serra-Jeannette, Woodland Hills-Penn Hills, McGuffey-Washington. Now that's a good night.

what's your prediction for the fab 5 this year  ?
Mike White
11:45
I'll go out on a limb and say Ethan Morton will be on it.
Thomas

True, their conference is weak, but so was the ACC for football, but for one team, and they won it all.  Never know.  Just happy to see the Rams back in the mix.  Its been a rough road lately there for most sports.
Mike White
11:46
Certainly has. But hey, Ringgold won the state baseball title.

Mike I know you are not big on Lincoln Park but I graduated from Midland and was good friends with Simmie , Norman and Ronny B. The best ever. Also knew Denny Wycik and Brad Davis well. Beaver County ruled the courts. Anyway is this the year we get payback on Nuemann-Goretti ? Thanks
Mike White
11:50
I still think Neumann-Goretti is good. But I think you ought to worry about Aliquippa first.  And maybe Seton LaSalle and North Catholic. And also Sharon is in 3A in District 10. Moved down from 4A.

does ryan meis have a shot at the Fab five ? he controls the game  ! similar to morton in how he pass's the rock !!
Mike White
11:51
Sure he has a shot. Saw him for the first time Saturday. Very good. Is he a lock for Fab 5? Most certainly not. These things have a way of playing out through the playoffs

Please don’t sleep on penn hills girls in 5A.  Things are starting to come together. There loaded with talent

Enjoy your column and insight.

Why thank you, John. Nice of you to say.

Mike would you trade AFC championship tickets in Heinz field for Friday pass to the Masters ?
Mike White
11:58
Hmmmm. Good question. I'd say no. Love golf but you can't follow everyone in person at a golf match. Good question, though. And those tickets to AFC game better be close to field. I'm a sissy. Refuse to sit up high any more - for anything.

What happened with butler dice game?  Is dice really better?
Mike White
11:58
Close in third quarter. Then Allderdice pulled away. Allderdice zones stopped Morton from penetrating.
11:59
OK that's about it for now. Lunch, a ninth-grade game and then off to showdown tonight - Butler at Pine-Richland. Everyone be good.
