Love those "Where are they now?" articles; nice one on WPIAL all-time scorers. Speaking of all-times, I know you get a lot of these questions, but...all time section win streaks? Tiny West Greene girls bball is about to reach 70 consecutive section wins dating back to 2016. I think this is absolutely monumental, especially for a small, rural, public school. Any idea of all-time WPIAL girls or boys section win streaks?
Mike White
11:39
Kudos to West Greene. That really is special for that school. But ahhhhhh, they have just a "little" to go to reach the WPIAL record for section winning streak. The North Catholic girls won 162 section games in a row from 1984-98. So West Greene only has a little less than 100 to go. ("So you're saying they have a chance."). Record for WPIAL boys section win streak is 111 by Blackhawk from 1990-99.

Watching QV been a bit down upsets me. They could be better if Mike used his bench last year and not just 5 kids. I know we had Adou and Markus but many games were blow outs and he never subbed. Got to prepare your next group when games are out of reach.

Sure. You by chance aren't the father of a former player who keeps emailing me about how Mike Mastroianni never used his son the correct way a few years ago, are you? The guy won a WPIAL title last year, went undefeated until state championship, his top player is now playing at Kentucky, but Mastroianni didn't go about it the right way? People never cease to amaze me.

Mike, Carter gould aka “lil bug” has been absolutely demonic on the court this year. Haven’t heard enough from the media about him.
Mike White
11:44
Totally agree. Now here's a big question. Who the heck is Carter Gould?

In your opinion, who was the best WPIAL high school basketball team that you have covered?
Mike White
11:47
OK, this means it has to be a team since 1979-80 season. I think I'd say the Schenley 2007 team. They are the best team, regardless of class. I mean, they dominated. How many teams around here can say they had two guys from a team that made the NBA (DeJuan Blair and D.J. Kennedy, D.J. had a few games in the NBA) and another (DeAndre Kane) who was all-conference in Power 5 conference. And had an "Onion" for point guard. And other starter played Division I football (Greg Blair at Cincinnati).

What high school game will you attend tonight?  Suggestion - Big game at Baldwin High School with USC coming to town.
Mike White
11:48
I won't be at that one. Saw USC last week.
Just Asking
11:48
when a team gets moved up in classification based on that winning formula, are they subject to that for the next two years? And can they move back down after that if they don’t sustain at the higher level?
Mike White
11:49
Yes, the move-up is under the PIAA competitive balance rule. If a team gets bumped up, they stay up for two years. But can move back down to their previous classification, if they don't accumulate the necessary six "success" points in those two years.

I don't want to hate on Cugini beating the scoring record but it is 100% contrived.  Weird offensive system, high volume of shots, and low classification were used to achieve this record.  If Cugini played on an average 5 or 6a school would he be considered a top player?
Mike White
11:52
Yes. But he wouldn't be averaging 30. He does have talent. His quickness and driving ability gets him a lot of points around the basket and near the basket. But he would be playing against bigger, more athletic players on a consistent basis. Not to knock Aquinas, but he would also probably have better teammates at an average 5A or 6A school. Plus, you have to remember that Vinnie gets a lot of his points because of Aquinas' style of play. Press and trap everywhere. Try to get the game fast-paced. Try to turn the other team over. That's not as easy to do do in 5A and 6A.

Hampton boys may well win their section but their best player Peter Kramer, will be ineligible for playoffs. Will WPIAL playoff committee base their seeding solely off regular season record or factor in loss of a key player in the seeding process?
Mike White
11:53
They better consider Peter won't be in playoffs. Why call them seedings if that is not considered?

mike- who’s your favorite freshman this year?
Mike White
11:55
I don't have a favorite.

162 straight section wins?!? Wow, they should've renamed the section for them! Can't help but wonder, is that streak longer than Norwin girls volleyball around the same time period. If memory serves me correct (no pun intended), Norwin did not lose a section match (or set for that matter!) in the 1980's. Apples to oranges here but love the chat
Mike White
11:56
You're talking about the Sheron Watson-coached teams at Norwin. I don't know what their section winning streak was, but I'm sure it was long. I mean, Watson coached from 1973-93 and her all-time match record was 642-21 and she won 13 consecutive WPIAL titles at one time. So I'm sure her section winning streak was really long.

Speaking on the Kramer situation.  That is what I hate about the rule.  Him playing and helping Hampton make the playoffs potentially left another team in their section from making playoffs.  A transfer should be allowed to play JV but not Varsity until their second season after the transfer.  Thoughts?
Mike White
11:58
You feel that way. Other people feel he should be allowed to play in playoffs. Some like that he's not allowed in playoffs and feel he should be allowed to play in regular season. Many opinions on this rule. I go back and forth on it. The intent of the rule was to lessen the number of transfers. I don't know if that's happened.
11:59
Well, that's it for today. Good, lively chat today. Enjoyed it, even the stupid comments. Everyone, be good.
