Things haven't been the same at Hempfield since George "The Animale" Steele got ejected from that one match years ago for bringing a foreign object into the ring.

Mike, how do you think the 5A boys playoffs will shape out? A lot of good teams in that section
Mike White
11:41
Montour definitely the team to beat.
11:43
A number of teams in 5A can also make a run. Baldwin, Uniontown, Char Valley, Moon, Peters Township and there are a few others also that you can't sleep on. I think Montour is good. I don't think there is a great team after that, but definitely some pretty good ones. Kind of like 6A after USC.

Quaker Valley's Mike Mastroianni currently has 592 wins.  Does he get to 600 this year?  Your thoughts...
Mike White
11:46
Well he has six games left this year and then playoffs. A few games he should win and a few tough ones also. That is a really tough call. Mike is one of the best coaches - and best guys - around. Great guy. But I'll say he comes up just short of 600 this year.

Alderdice with a big win over Chartiers Valley!
Mike White

Yes it was.

Hey Mike. Did Seneca Valley hire a football coach yet? If so, who? and if not, who is looking like they could get it? Enjoy semi retirement.
Mike White
11:47
Not yet. Supposed to Monday. I have an idea who's getting it but I can't say for sure yet.

Mike, your "max" deal at NH does not include ravioli, meatballs, sauce and garlic bread.  If you enter the transfer portal and Ralph Blundo claims you, you can get all that as part of your new "max" contract with NC!
Mike White
11:49
I'm only going to New Castle if Ralph's wife, Kate, is my assistant. She's the brains of that operation anyway. People just don't know because she does it all behind the scenes. Was a star play at Avonworth in her day.

Mike, I had the pleasure to meet George "The Animal" Steele and Baron Von Rashke back in 2002 in Las Vegas.  Both great guys!  Did you know that GS was only about 5'10"?  TV made him look like a giant monster in the ring.
Mike White
11:50
No, I did not know that. If he was only 5-10, he looked bigger because of all the hair on his back.

Any PIAA title champions this season for the WPIAL in basketball?
Mike White
11:50
For boys, I'd say one or two at the most.

Hey Mike.  I see that North Hills boys are have picked it up.  Now in playoff position.  Big win over Seneca Valley and super tight game with Baldwin despite missing top player.  What's the key to this improvement?
Mike White
11:51
Honestly, simply playing a lot better.

Agree with what you said about the cost of a shot clock (approx. $3000). I'm sure there are some retired officials out there who would run it for $50-$75 a game. Between varsity boys and girls, about 20 games a year. Raise ticket prices by 50 cents a game to help cover cost.
Mike White
11:53
Exactly. There are certainly ways to cover costs. But I will say it's not easy to get people to work such jobs. I talk to ADs everywhere and it's hard these days to get people to work jobs, like taking tickets, etc. And fewer and fewer people want to coach, especially at the middle school or junior high levels.
Commissioner
11:53
Do you expect referees to strictly enforce the new PIAA rule on players making gun and bow and arrow type gestures? Thank you
Mike White
11:53
I don't think it will be a big issue because I don't think kids will do it. I just wish the PIAA wouldn't have a gray area where it could be a technical or it could be an objection, depending on what the official sees.
Hoops
11:55
What do you know about 1A girls hoops? Heard Serra got a tremendous freshman that’s going to cause some problems even more so in the Future
Mike White
11:56
You wouldn't by chance be related to that freshman, would you? You're talking about Bella Dumbroski. She's a 5-9 freshman averaging in the neighborhood of 20 a game. No, I have not seen her, so I don't know how many "problems" she will cause in the future.
Basketball

Knoch just seems to be right there and cant win a close game.  If they put it together any thoughts on the Knights.  Junior guards Teegan Finucan is only 23 points aways from 1000 and Jackson Bauman in 61.  Any thoughts on this duo
Mike White
11:58
Very good duo. Both juniors. Knoch still a title contender this year. I saw the Knoch-Belle Vernon game Saturday. Good Lord, was that a rough, physical game. Knoch is one of three teams tied for section lead with one loss (North Catholic and Deer Lakes the other). I think Knoch can beat almost anyone in the top five in 4A, but they could also lose to any of them.
11:59
Well that's about it. Time for lunch. Leftover spaghetti. Just wish I had some sauce from Pagley's in New Castle. Everyone, be good. We'll talk again next Tuesday at 11 a.m.
