In your opinion who are the real contenders to win the WPIAL in 5A Boys?

Penn Hills definitely No. 1 team and team to beat. They're good. Have a number of things in their favor. After that, North HIlls is certainly one of top teams. And NH section is really good. Mars just beat North Hills. Don't forget Mars, or Moon, or anyone from that section. I know Gateway just hammered by Penn Hills, but I still think Gateway is a team to watch. Peters Township seems to be playing very well. Won 7 in a row. I know a few of the wins were against, let's say, not too swift competition. But they won AT Bethel Park, Lebo and TJ. So it's Penn Hills and then the rest.

Huge rivalry game between Deer Lakes and Burrell tonight in 3A. This game can possibly decide what the final standings will be in that section. Last game was decided by 1 point in overtime at Burrell. Any thoughts on the outcome tonight?

I saw last week Hillel Academy forfeited to Imani. Anything to this story or just a case of small team not having enough kids to play?

We have Hillel playing only six games so far and yes they have forfeited. I would guess it's because of small roster. Not sure. I guess this is what happens with a tiny school that doesn't have many kids. First year in WPIAL. Maybe they should re-think.

He has an injured wrist. According to coach, not sure when he will be back. Big loss for Bishop Canevin. One of leading scorers in WPIAL.

Mike--6A boys seems wide open at this point, especially section 1. Do you lean toward a favorite?

Central and New Castle. They play Friday night. No matter what happens in that game, it might not clear anything up. I think Isaiah Boice, NC's leading scorer, is still out. Not sure when he will return. I think those two are the two best teams. But far from unbeatable.

Last week someone mentioned the OC for Lebo was helping Union during games once Lebo was eliminated. It was WAY beyond that. It was coaching. Pretty much their OC. Is this common? Other coaches becoming coaches for other teams? Isn't there a process for this? School board approval etc? Found it weird as Union kept playing and Lebo guys not just supporting, but actively coaching.

I don't know how much anyone from Lebo helped with Union. But remember, Union coach (Kim Niedbala) was at Mt. Lebanon before this. And if there's a coach somewhere that head coach trusts - and believes he can help - then what's wrong with using him after their season is over? I have no problem with it. Maybe the guy did indeed help. I know Bob Palko was even lending a helping hand.

USC Girls the favourite in your opinion in 6A at this point ? Who is as good ?

Right now USC is definite No. 1. Just beat No. 2 Norwin. Although North Allegheny still intrigues me, I think USC is definite favorite. This should be their year. But they beat Norwin at home. What happens on neutral floor? But it would definitely be surprising if USC doesn't win it this year.

Union has played without their best rebounder and post player, Mark Stanley, all season due to a football injury.  He may or may not be ready to comeback for the playoffs.  If he does come back for the playoffs, how does it affect team chemistry?

Well, I think he was a starter last year. And if you can get a starter back for the playoffs, I would think the team would welcome that. Wouldn't he give them some inside presence?

Where do the Dice Dragons stand with WPIAL competition?

As good, or better, than anyone in WPIAL. Allderdice is 6A. But there are WPIAL teams that can certainly play with Allderdice. But they are primed for a run in PIAA playoffs.

Ha ha. Yes, it was. They must have re-run that show last week? Because you're the third person who asked me about it. I love Isaly's -- ever since I was a kid. I think the one in West View is the last one open? I had gone there for breakfast that day on my way to Outer Banks for family vacation. I think that was 22-23 years ago. You say I have aged well? Well, the hair is most certainly a different color than back in that show. Ha ha. But thank you.

Chartiers Valley is 10-6. They're pretty decent. Not great. Not bad. They will be in playoffs. But I think a championship is out of the question.

I was watching WQED throwback this past week and it had a sandwich episode of all the best sandwiches around the country. They did one on Pittsburgh and saw a young Mike White on there at Islay’s in West View talking about a chipped ham sandwich! The best sandwich out there!

Mike. How hard is it to separate your personal feelings from your professional duty in writing? Example; the private/public school stuff. You've made feelings clear, but have to cover a school like Imani without bias. Is it tough? Thanks for all you do for kids.

Just try to present facts when they're available, like how Imani has a number of players who transferred past few years. Let people decide. Yes, sometimes I do write a column with personal thoughts. That's alllowed. BUt when I cover a game, I cover the game.

I don't know if you saw the clip after the AFC title game in the Bengals locker room of the media asking Ossai the guy who was essentially responsible for the Bengals loss questions and BJ Hill standing there telling them not to ask certain questions. What is your feeling on that sort of behavior ? Have you ever had a coach or player at the HS level give you grief or attempt to intimidate you into not asking certain questions ? I think Hill was way outta line but people are defending him
