How does a former D1 assistant with NBA experience muster up an offense that only lead to 26 points vs Naz Prep?? Its not like theyre lacking talent. Greg Cercone guaranteed a state championship before the year. LOL.

You're talking about Sewickley Academy. I have no idea what Greg Cercone (assistant) guaranteed.
current hs talent

Congrats on the semi retirement.  It seems that with all the changes to D1 hoops (transfer portal being #1) many kids now that 30 years ago would have been Low D1 kids are not getting looks.  Carmicheal as an example.  No way that kid can't play in the NEC.  He will be very successful at D2 if that is where he ends up.  But I actually do not think players 30 years ago were any better than the talent in the WPIAL now.  Population changed so maybe less but the best players are still very good.  It is just the entire process for recruiting has changed.  Interested to hear your thoughts.

Agree wholeheartedly. 30 years ago was only 1995. We weren't exactly producing 15 D-1 kids every year then, either. I think the talent overall today is very similar to 1995. Now is it similar to 1975 and 1965? Woooo Nellie. Hold on. Yes, we still have good players. And the transfer portal has hurt many basketball and football players who normally would've been recruited in Division II. But you know what I thought for years with Western Pa. basketball? We don't have those athletic wing players who are 6-5 or 6-6 and can play guard. We just don't get those around here.
Wpial coach of year

hi Mike - hope you are well. I am wondering if Jordan marks from neighborhood is in consideration for COY? I know his top guard is for the player awards. But what he has done with his roster to arguably be a top team regardless of class is insane. With Imani beating USC and dice beating CV it opens up the argument, no?

Many coaches are considered for coach of the year after the season. Let's see what happens.

Who will be the last team in 6a section 1?
Mike White
11:50
It could go a number of ways. Butler is in but could be anywhere from tied for third to 5th. North Hills, Pine and Woodland Hills all still alive.

If you put Mastrionni, David, Holzer, Blundo, Palmosina, Ackermann at Westinghouse they'd never be above .500 in the City and would most likely quit before the season even started. You're only as good as your players.

Good coaches can have a big effect on a team. But that only goes so far. Could they make a bad team competitive? I don't know. If you have a bunch of tomato cans, you can bring in Pat Riley and they're still going to be horrendous. But sometimes a coach can make a not-so-good team competitive. But you're right. It's not so much about Xs and Os as it is Jimmy and Joes.

Does wpial take strength of schedule non section into play?
Mike White

Yes.

Why hasn’t there been any more details on Swan getting fired?
Mike White
11:53
He resigned. It's a personnel issue, the school says.

Totally agree, Mike, on the old "seat belt" rule.  Coaches need the freedom to see the game.  They can't do that effectively from a seated position.  Yes, some coaches are animated and spectators tend to feed off their enthusiasm.  Good officials are able to communicate effectively with coaches.  From an officiating standpoint, coaches standing and walking up and down the coaching box lends to much more effective and efficient coach-official communication.  The mechanic of the official calling the foul and staying table side is designed to increase the coach-official communication.  Yes, fans sometimes feed from the coach, but most coaches are using their coaching box to communicate better with their players.  The "seat blet" rule was over-antiquated and rightfully removed.

Thank you.
6A Girls Basketball
11:55
Who do you think will be the top four seeds for 6A girls basketball?
Mike White
11:59
I'll be blunt. 6A girls basketball is not very good, as far as depth of quality teams. But there are only 12 teams, so should we be surprised? Plus, some good teams might have changed classes. And North Allegheny's program has dropped considerably. I think Norwin will be No. 1, Upper St. Clair No. 2 and Seneca Valley No. 3. But think of it: The No. 4 seed will likely be Pine-Richland. They are 7-12 and do not have a victory against a team with a winning record.

Hey, that's about it. I hear some leftover grilled pork roast and broccoli calling my name for lunch. We'll do this again next Tuesday at 11 a.m. WPIAL pairings and seedings will be out by then. Everyone, be good.
