Impressive win by Jeannette. I wasn't there, but apparently Jeannette really took it to them. Big doesn't always mean better. But like I said earlier in chat. Should we really be surprised? I mean, Jeannette basketball has been pretty good for quite some time.

What's your take on the Big 33 and the East-West games?  Any one you think they missed?  Good representation for the WPIAL?  Has there ever been a WPIAL Football All-Star game, or consideration for it?
Mike White
11:38
You can't really say if they "missed" anyone. Heck, there are a bunch of top players these days who choose not to play. So you have no idea who chose not to play. Put it this way: I went to the Big 33 for probably 25 years. It certainly isn't what it used to be. It used to be such a big thing in Hershey. But it has changed like many things in football. It's nice that they still have the game but I don't think there is that much interest in it any longer.
Quip fan.
11:38
Talk about the Quips. Don't read much about them. Undefeated in their section, playing Canevin tonight. Josh Pratt... fab 5?
Mike White
11:39
You don't hear much about Aliquippa? Please. ... And yes Josh Pratt is a prime candidate for Fab 5.

Do you know what happened at the end of regulation in the Northgate-Neshannock boys 2A game?  I was trying to listen in but the broadcast was having audio issues.  Sounded like Northgate was going to win but then got a technical?
Mike White
11:40
Sorry, but I don't know.

So all a team has to do to make state playoffs in basketball is win 1 playoff game (5A is what I used for this)? There might be teams that go 1-2 in the WPIAL playoffs and make the PIAA tournament. Do we need so many teams in the state tournament?
Mike White
11:41
If the PIAA wants to have a 32-team bracket, then you need teams. I don't have a problem with it.

20 million in scholarships and a 150k for a head coach and sewickly can’t beat a couple hoopers from Jeannette!!
Mike White
11:43
Sorry but I have no idea what Sewickley coach is paid. I do know that Thomas Tull did indeed donate $20 million to the school three years ago. But c'mon, as the Post-Gazette reported in 2022, that money was to "fund a set of projects and initiatives meant to improve the institution’s academic and athletic offerings and expand access through an increased scholarship program."

Have you ever seen a basketball game where a team leads at halftime by 16-15 then does not score a point or attempt a free throw in the 2nd half and loses 38-16 as happened last week in Union/Bishop Canevin game?
Mike White
11:44
That was unbelievable. And no I've never seen that in a game, especially in playoffs. Apparently, Bishop Canevin developed a "zero tolerance" policy in the second half. ... Wooooo hooooo!!! I'll be here all week. Tip your waitresses.
11:46
Just a thought. I wish the WPIAL and Petersen people would let students down in the bottom end zone sections for the WPIAL championships. I'm just sayin'. And please don't give me for security reasons.

Mike, love the chats as always!! What would you say is the best WPIAL football coaching gig?
Mike White
11:47
Wow. I couldn't answer that. Many things involved. Facilities. Support from administration. But you know what makes the best coaching situation? Good players.

Mike, Any top end baseball talent this year? Been many years in a row with a WPIAL player drafted pretty high.
Mike White
11:51
I don't think there will be any top two or three round picks. I still think Christian Lucarelli, senior pitcher at Duke, is really good. Bothered by some injuries and didn't have great season last year, but he is good. ... And how about this: Mt. Lebanon's Graham Keen is a 6-foot-5 sophomore who was named the No. 2 sophomore in the country by Prep Baseball. Keen had an impact last year as a freshman. He's good. Played pitcher-1B last year. Really good size, long. Looks the part.
4a matchups

Thoughts on beaver vs Avonworth and Knoch vs deer lakes both games teams know each other well
Mike White
11:55
Both of those games are consolation bracket games for PIAA seedings. Rematches of section games. We get Carmichael vs. Mayo one more time. That's interesting. Those consolation games are so hard to predict.

I've seen where the Post Gazette mentions the official's names in the box score but not very often?
Mike White
11:56
We only do it for the championship games. Been doing it for years.

I'm impressed at how USC has coaches that have been there forever. Render, Holzer, Jerry Malarkey, Serio. Guess the people appreciate consistence in the coaching
Mike White

Good point. You don't see longevity in high school coaching any more. Too many hassles to deal with other than coaching. But that's part of the job now.
12:00
En algun momento de marzo. ..... How do you like my Spanish? I excelled as a Spanish student in high school. Just ask my good friends Mike Stoehr and Tony Sciulli. Ha ha. Truth be told, I just asked my phone "how do you say 'at some point in early March' in Spanish."
12:04
And that does it for another edition of the wildly popular high school chat. What's for lunch? I have no idea today. Remember, WPIAL hoops championships are Thursday through Saturday at The Pete. I'll be there for most of them. Post-Gazette will have extensive coverage. See ya, everybody. Be good.
