Mike - You mentioned on your podcast that the legendary shot clock discussion may be closer to the table in PA than not. Is it possible to talk about the extra options with it if it would be implemented in the near future? I.E. If the mercy rule is in effect, then maybe the shot clock is turned off the rest of the game, etc.?
Mike White
11:33
I don't know about "extra options." Look earlier in the chat. I discussed shot clock.

I heard Whitlock is suspended two games. Article said one game. Do you know whether it will be one or two?
Mike White
11:33
It's two games.

Spring sports are a letdown after all this hoop stuff...
Mike White
11:34
No, there isn't as much "hype" with spring sports. But when playoffs come around for spring sports, interest grows. It's not like basketball or football, but it grows. Heck, we have a kid (Cole Young of North Allegheny) who is projected as a first-round draft pick.

Heard about the incident with a top player from Belle Vernon.  Certainly makes the game vs. Obama more of a toss up tonight.  Do you know if he would be back for Friday's game or if its an extended suspension?
Mike White
11:35
It's two games supposedly.

Heard alot of chatter out of Montour folks Thursday night that were robbed as Quaker Valley shot 34 free throws to Montour's 6.  I actually got Montour got a good game out of the refs and actually got away with alot of fouls.  Its very tough to stop QV as there two big guns get to the hole so well.  Montour settled for way to many 3's in that game and that was ultimately what the difference was.  (I have no allegiance to either team as my team, Uniontown, was long gone from the playoffs)
Mike White

I covered the game. There was a big discrepancy in fouls. But I would say this: Quaker Valley's offense was all about Markus Frank and Adou Thiero going to the hoop. That draws more fouls. I think Montour attempted something like 16 3's, and Quaker Valley 6? Can't remember exact numbers. Plus, Montour was down late and was fouling. That put QV at the line a lot more. I actually thought Adou Thiero was fouled a few times going to the hoop in the first half and it wasn't called. But it is a bitter pill to swallow when a team shoots 28 more foul shots than you.

Saw Devin Whitlock isn't playing tonight. Do you know why ?
Mike White
11:39
For unsportsmanlike actions following semifinal loss to Montour. School suspended him for two games.

Was wondering if you have heard about the Moon Boys Basketball coach resigning?
Mike White
11:39
Yes, that is true.

When will all-section teams be announced for boys basketball?
Mike White

A week or two after the season.

It seems like it takes teams a quarter or so to adjust to the Pete.. is the court at the pete much bigger than high school courts? It looks bigger.
Mike White
11:42
Funny. I was thinking the same thing after some of the games this weekend. I've seen so many high school games at college arenas where teams struggle shooting for maybe a half. It is totally new surroundings without a wall behind the hoop.

I believe you mentioned 4 or 5 other wpial finals went to double OT??  So you know who they were off the top of your head?
Mike White
11:45
This was the 6th. 2014 Central Valley vs. Char Valley two OT. 2007 West Allegheny vs. Char Valley two OT. 1994 Beaver Falls vs. Blackhawk 2 OTs. The famous Beaver Fals vs. Aliquippa game in 2006 that went three OTs with Lance Jeter shot. 1987 Neshannock vs. Monessen went 3 OTs.

Mike- USC alum. Why have the athletic programs at USC become so bad ? Or should I say so mediocre ? Not even a sniff at a title with any sports this year. Losing to "that district who shall not be named" in the Girls and Boys Basketball playoffs. This isn't the USC that I knew. This district loves to break our hearts doesn't it ? What gives ?

Good lord, Upper St. Clair just won the boys basketball championship a year ago. And it's not like the girls team is horrible. They've been in the WPIAL title game the past two years and beat Mt. Lebanon once this year. I guess under your terms that's "bad."

I play for Neshannock High School and we are 7-7, I was wondering when the last time a 7 seed out of the WPIAL made the state finals or if that has ever even happened?
Mike White
11:49
There have been teams that have lost in the quarterfinals of WPIAL and won state championships. Penn Hills in 2004 and Valley in 1979 come to mind right away.
Let’s go

When was the last time before canevin did it that a school won the wpial in boys and girls basketball
Mike White
11:50
Ahhhh, two years ago. North Catholic did it. Canevin is the 18th to do it.

11:50
how do you guys decide coach of the year
Mike White
11:51
High school staff votes on it and we get some opinions from some of the coaches.

I could’ve sworn Carlynton vs Sto-Rox in 1992??  Maybe not
Mike White
11:52
Our records say single overtime. Sto-Rox won, 53-50.
What is the secret ?
11:52
What is the secret with NA and its Swimming program ? How do they win year in and year out ? Why can't other districts do that ?
Mike White
11:52
Not sure. If it was that easy or some formula, other schools would follow.

Good morning Mike, always enjoy these chats. This is more of a history question. Cook and Joe were recently talking about the greatest high school athlete from Western Pa. They mentioned Tom Clements. I went to school early 70’s at Greensburg Central, we played Canevin in the Pittsburgh Catholic League, I was a couple grades behind him. I remember someone telling us that Clements lettered in 4 sports for 4 years: FB,BB, baseball, track. Unheard of today, if it was true. Have you ever given any thought or made a list about the greatest HS athletes ever to come out of Western PA?
Mike White
11:54
Yes, we have done stories on great athletes and even listed some of the great two-sport athletes of all time. I contend Clements has to be one of the best two or three. I don't know if he ran track, but I do know he was tremendous in football, basketball and even baseball. This should tell you all you need to know about him. His college choices came down to this: Go to Notre Dame to be a quarterback -- or University of North Carolina to be a point guard. Enough said with how good that dude was.

Mike - do you think the background / open space of the Pete is a reason teams shoot it so poorly there? The scores were very low and some teams couldn't make a lot of shots. Has this ever been brought up?
Mike White
11:56
I talked about it earlier in chat. I do think the background does affect shooting because shooting is not good in many, many games over the years. No wall behind the basket definitely makes it different.

Now that the state tourney has begun, thoughts on the “follow the leader” method used? Seems lazy in my opinion.
Mike White
12:01
I don't like it. I wish they would play them off. They did a few years ago for, I think, just a year or two. Then they went back to follow the leader system.

Pryor or Arrington or dwight collins or bryan davis have to be some of greatest 2 sport athletes
Mike White
12:02
Most certainly you've got some of them there. Dwight Collins opened eyes in 1976-77 when he started as a freshman in two sports. Back then, it was a pretty big deal if a freshman saw playing time in a varsity sports, let alone start in both football and basketball.
