It's pretty easy to select 1 and 2 seeds. We've talked about committee before on this chat, stories and podcast. They did fine - except in 6A. And who's left isn't the point. In my opinion, and many others, it wasn't right how they seeded 6A.

In response to Blind mans bluff regarding the refs being biased, I know there are biased refs.  They are human too.  I watched a ref warn a coach before a game about his behavior.  Then NA lost the game.
Mike White
11:38
OK.

Mike if you ran the WPIAL would you have punished Joey David ?
Mike White
11:40
Probably not. Because testimony from all involved said he really didn't break any rules, did he?

Mike - What is your outlook for the Belle Vernon Area - North Catholic match up?
Mike White
11:41
I'll take Belle Vernon. A key will be whether North Catholic's pressing and traps turn Belle Vernon over some. And how will Belle Vernon deal with 6-7 Andrew Ammerman?

Mike, I know I’m in the distinct minority in liking the old school only district champ advances to states this year, but it’s been a bugaboo of mine to see sometimes the WPIAL champ have to beat the same team a week and a half after just doing so to advance in states. If you were czar of PIAA basketball, how many teams would you have as state qualifiers from a classification?
Mike White
11:42
Four.

Any word yet on championship site selection for March 15th games? And bold prediction that Eden Christian will beat West Greene in 1A girls semifinals. If that happens, it will be first and only home loss for WG senior class. We shall see...
Mike White
11:44
Girls doubleheader at Peters Township at 5 and 8 ... Boys doubleheader at North Allegheny 5 and 8. ... As for the girls game, OK you convinced me. I'll switch to West Greene. I'm Greene with envy.
Absolutely

If USC doesn't at least make the Finals, given all the hype they had coming into the season, is it considered a hugely disappointing season ?
Mike White
11:47
Absolutely not. You know, USC is good, but they are far from unbeatable. This isn't DeJuan Blair, D.J. Kennedy and the 2007 Schenley team or Ambridge from 1967. C'mon. Sure, USC would be disappointed if it lost in semis. And if they lose, they would finish with two losses. To call that hugely disappointing? C'mon. Everyone has said all year how Class 6A is deep and pretty balanced.

Do you like the old days when a euro step was a travel?  How about whenever mild contact around the basket didn't have to be called a foul (either a charge or a block)?
Mike White
11:49
I don't mind the Eurostep. As far as the block-charge, this is only anecdotal. But it seems like everything is called a charge now in high school ball. I would say of the games I've seen this year, about 90 percent have been charge calls. It does get annoying. The one that I hate is when the offensive player moves sideways to avoid the contact, barely brushes the defender on the side, the defender falls and a charge is called. I would like to see the "arc" come into high school under the hoop, like college and NBA. Maybe that would help some. I see so many charges under the hoop.

I am so old I remember when short shorts were cool.  Then long shorts were cool.  Now short shorts are cool again.  Should've just kept with the 80's look.
Mike White

Funny you bring this up. I am writing a column later this week on old rules in basketball that are no more. And old styles also. Remember the "3 to make 2" in the NBA? Ridiculous.

How bout the Rocks boys making it to the semifinals again even after losing 8 seniors? Is Sto-Rox sports officially back
Mike White
11:52
Football has done well and now so has basketball. But I don't think basketball was ever really "down."

During COVID Bishop Canevin could have called themselves the Masked Crusaders but Batman would have sued them.

Wooooo hooooo! Mr. Mister will be here all week. Try the veal and tip your waitresses.

I know this is the year of peace, love, and don't bash the refs, but man there were some inconsistent calls at the end of regulation and OT between Mt. Lebo and Bethel Park girls. Two no-calls on last possession of regulation and a tic-tac hand check foul on a girl moving AWA Y from basket. It is what it is, but this is a tough pill to swallow for a losing coach, especially in a year when so many quality teams can't advance to states. Just my spare change....
Mike White
11:54
Totally agree. I wasn't there, but talked to a few coaches and our reporter (Brad Everett) who was there. All said some very shaky calls. That's tough to handle.
Mr. Mister
11:54
I am trying to replace you as the dribbler with my dad jokes.
Mike White
11:54
Again, who says I am The Dribbler?

11:54
Can the WPIAL or PIAA fine a coach or a program or a school for conduct ?
Mike White
11:55
There are no "fines" for coaches or schools. There are penalties, but fines? Now, there have been instances when a school was ordered to pay damages if they ruined something at another school. But there have never been "fines" of coaches. This isn't the NBA.

I find it a little odd that you are not aware of the NA coaches actions because that's all everyone is talking about. I believe you but my question is what kind of punishment can WPIAL do do a coach who pushes a police offer while on a f bomb rant? Thanks
Mike White
11:58
I heard that coach DeRose was really upset at the half and stormed off. But if I wasn't there, didn't see it and have seen no reporting on it, I don't think it's really appropriate for me to say what I "heard" happened.
Mr. Mister
11:59
The word around Millvale is that you ARE the dribbler!!!!
Mike White
11:59
Well the word around Etna is that Ron Cook is The Dribbler. So who knows. If I told you, I'd wake up with a horse's head in my bed.

Can't wait to read the old rules/new rules article. I watched a reply of Aliquippa-Carbondale boys PIAA title game from the 1980's or early 90's. Biggest thing I noticed was that there was no "double bonus" foul shots. Quips missed front end of several 1&1's but hung on to win. Today, they would've automatically gotten several extra foul shots.
Mike White
12:00
Yep, everything was 1 and 1 when you were in the bonus.
12:01
Well, that's it for today boys and girls. It was "real." Everyone, be good.
