Any WPIAL Football Coaching updates for spots still open?
Mike White
11:36
Hempfield filled their position last night. Nick Keefer. Might be a few smaller schools still open. Not sure.

Mike - Whatever happened to the Jackson Brothers from Allderdice?
Mike White
11:38
No idea. I know they bounced around at some junior colleges, etc. But I never saw them do much. They were two very good high school athletes, though.
WeatherMan

Like clockwork--Weather moving PIAA playoff games and delaying spring sports ability to start outside. I think Softball should be moved to the fall
Mike White
11:39
Disagree. Weather thing happens every year. And the start of baseball and softball is earlier this year. Usually, it's on the same weekend of state basketball championships. You move softball to the fall, you'll get a lot of complaints that some girls will have to choose between softball and soccer.

Trib Reporting Butler will rejoin the wpial for football in 2024. Seems like there should be more 6A schools next time around as they are reverting back to counting every student next cycle.
Mike White
11:40
Hard to say what 6A will look like because you just don't know enrollment figures or where cutoffs are. It would be a total guess.

Congrats on Joining the Dolphins mike!
Mike White
11:41
Thank you. They showed me the money - and I took it. Hoping to have a good connection with "Flipper" the Dolphin.

It's absurd that Imani gets to play Single A basketball with the recruits that they have put together on this team.  They should be forced to step up to 6A and play teams that can compete with them.  I hope the WPIAL steps in and doesn't let this happen again.  Lets put teams on a level playing field. What a joke!
Mike White
11:43
That's just not how it works. It's just part of the everlasting argument of public vs. private-Catholic-charter schools. Don't look for any changes. Only thing that "might" - and I stress "might" - is WPIAL putting many of "non-boundary" schools in lower classes in their own sections in regular season. Stay tuned on that one.

Wonder if the USC hater that frequents the chat does anything to help or volunteer for any of USC's teams? I'm sure they are always looking for extra help.
Mike White
11:44
There are haters everywhere. This one just seems to like this chat. Go figure.
Competitive Balance
11:44
There was an article about Butler rejoining the WPIAL in 20224 for Football. Part of their hope is the PIAA considering a competitive balance where a bad team can move down despite enrollment numbers. Do you see something like this possibly gaining any traction? Maybe help a big school that just cannot compete in their classification move down to have a chance at competing like schools can play up. Kind of like European Football with promotion and relegation.
Mike White
11:46
I don't think it's a bad idea, but I don't see it happening. There is no push for it. But hey, high school hockey in the PIHL does that, right? I mean, you've got some big schools playing in the smallest classification in hockey because they couldn't compete in higher classes. It's not the worst idea. But think of it. Might bring "tanking" into high school sports.

Good morning Mike. I have really enjoyed the playoffs so far. To me the talent level seems up this year compared to recent seasons. I know some of the underclassmen are Nationally ranked. Are any of the current seniors being recruited?
Mike White
11:49
Daemar Kelly has signed with Quinnipiac. He's a senior from Penn Hills. Steel Valley's Makhai Valentine had a few lower D-1 offers before the season and if you can belive this, Boise State is now interested in him. I might be wrong, but off the top of my head, I can't think of another D-1 in senior class. They're all D-2 or lower.
Possible Solution
11:50
Would stacked teams play in 1A if they were told they can’t play anyone out of state, and all nonconference games have to be against teams 3A and lower? 2A would allow one out of state game and all nonconference 4A and lower and so on. Basically force a team that wants to play a National schedule and still compete in the playoffs to play up to 5A or 6A.
Mike White
11:50
No way that would ever pass in WPIAL or PIAA. No way you can tell teams who they can or can't play in non-conference.
Disappointed
11:51
I have done volunteer work for them. I also pay a sizeable tax bill to the school district for the Cadillac facilities they have now and expect to get my monies worth. So sorry that you all have an issue with me wanting them to win
Mike White
11:54
They do win a lot - in many different sports. If you think you're nothing if you don't win the WPIAL, then I guess they are nothing. But then the WPIAL is filled with "nothings." ... Let me ask you. Do you have cheese with your "whines?"

Did the Imani players really talk trash to the Union coach?
Mike White
11:54
No idea. Union coach said one kid was talking to him.

Erie lost to Shadyside Academy by 40 and beat Allderdice twice. Were they missing players? I am baffled!
Mike White
11:55
Me, too. I have no answer how Erie beat Allderdice twice. Allderdice had a 17-point lead in second half of second loss. Shame because I think Allderdice was as good as any WPIAL team.

Is Central as the 6A Champ the worst WPIAL champion?  Already lost to Imani and runner up North Catholic(4A), beat Penn Hills on a buzzer beater at home.  Them vs Aliquippa or Deer Lakes would be a good game?
Mike White
11:57
I'm not here to call anyone the "worst" champion. Geez. Central Catholic is a good team. They're not tremendous, but so what? There isn't a tremendous team in 6A in the WPIAL. Doesn't mean Central is bad. But I will say if you think 6A wasn't all that good in WPIAL this year, it will be worse next year.

Doesn't DePante from Central have D1 offers?
Mike White
11:58
I know he had one from North Florida in the summer, but I don't think that scholarship is there any longer. I may be wrong, but I don't know of any other Division I's that he has. If he does, maybe someone out there can tell me.

What about the Quips!!!! And Mike, too bad the three pointer wasn't a College thing back in your day!
Mike White
12:00
Quips have a decent shot at getting to Hershey. And I don't think there's an overwhelming team out east in 2A. Aliquippa was in 3A last year and made it to state finals and most of those players are back.
12:04
Well, that's about it for today. Thanks, everyone. Good luck to all the teams left in the state basketball playoffs and best of luck to all the spring sports teams. Hope you get to play some time soon. Everyone, be good.
