Good. And let's keep them playing in their own leagues, and not have WPIAL sponsor them. Maybe the WPIAL someday will also sponsor 3 on 3 basketball.

Im looking forward to seeing the backcourt siblings of Bryant and Brickus  from coatesville vs Kennedy. I have Kennedy winning late but Kennedy hasnt played a backcourt with this much speed. Including Imhoteps Your thoughts.
Mike White
11:36
But Kennedy has a huge size advantage. And they have Oscar. That will be the difference. Remember, Coatesville only beat Butler by I think five. And yes, Coatesville has good guards. What did Brickus have 51 or 52 last game. But ahhhh, Kennedy's guards are pretty good also. And they have Oscar. That will be the difference. Have I said that before. Kennedy could get challenged, though, and also in state final. A key will be how game is officiated. I've heard from numerous people that Coatesville was beating up Ethan Morton - and no calls. And he still scored 35.

Any thoughts on PR football potential next year?  In particular, are there any kids coming up from JV that are thought to be potential d1 players. They lose a lot in D1 lineman and 2 excellent linebackers.  Meckler and Spencer return, but lots of holes to fill....and some places where they have returning players but were noticeably weak (like receiver).
Mike White
11:38
Yes, Pine-Richland has a lot of holes to fill. Sorry but I didn't really make an effort to get to JV games. I know, silly me. No idea who is coming up from JV.

Mergers are always rumored this time of year, Which potential school would you want to see?
Mike White
11:38
It will never happen because TJ doesn't want it, but what if Clairton merged with Thomas Jefferson? Or Sto-Rox with Montour?
Central Dad
11:39
As I said earlier in the season, since my kid has moved on I watch dice. saw them a ton over the past few years (not just regular season every week at central in spring and fall league etc). Played against buddy growing up. Saw the last 2 games and something was different - not the "buddy ball" you mention... void of any real strategy and trademark intensity. some of my friends on 5th ave think he mailed it in because his deals done at alumni hall... of course those same friends didn't think it was a good look. care to discuss any other potential candidates? Skrinjar?
Mike White
11:41
That's ridiculous to say Buddy "mailed it in." What an insult. He had same intensity as before. Team played a different style than they did a few years ago when they went to states. To say he mailed it in? Wow. Sorry, but I think you're way off base. The guy was losing to Kennedy by 4 in the fourth quarter. Lost a close game to Mt. Lebanon. Lost only a few games. That's mailing it in? Please, Central Dad.

Do you personally think that Coach David's comments about KC players being from all over the world was out of line? KC coach took offensive, but did you think it was not needed?
Mike White
11:44
Wasn't out of line at all. Was the truth. And like Joe David said, he simply said what everyone was thinking. It is what it is with Kennedy. So be it. Rick Mancino has done a nice job with them. But for him or that school to think they won't be the subject of critical comments? Please. It's fine if they want to bring in kids, but you have to expect the negativity. Coach Mancino said there is a time and place for those comments? When would that time be? Is coach David supposed to wait until after the season, and call a reporter and say, "Hey, I'd like to make a comment about Kennedy. Would you print it?" He was asked about Kennedy. He gave his opinion. So be it.

When will the all sections teams be released?
Mike White
11:45
In a few weeks. I'll be blunt. Basketball and baseball coaches around here are the worst with getting them to vote. Takes time after time after time to contact some of them. Not all of them, but you'd be surprised at the effort that is needed to get them to give us their votes.

Mike, I know we are beating a dead horse-- but is this kennedy program going to continue to bring in players even with the microscope on their program right now?? Seems like there are some really shady handlers and aau guys involved, would have to think the PIAA steps in and shuts it down at some point
Mike White
11:46
Come on. PIAA is not going to shut it down. I have no idea who will be there in the future.

Has Tim McConnell cemented himself as the greatest WPIAL coach of all time after his dominance this year?  I would question how many coaches could be successful with boys and girls programs.
Mike White
11:48
In my mind, one of the best coaches of any sport in history of WPIAL. I just wonder one thing. Those in Char Valley administration who supposedly suggested he lost his passion and desire for coaching last year, what are they thinking now? The guy is one of a kind. Not everybody can play for him. He's tough. But I can tell you a lot of these girls on CV really seem to care for him. Why would you not?

What do you think of LP against Sharon game tonight?
Mike White
11:49
Sharon has the big guy, Porterfield. Maybe the best big guys LP has faced this year?? Maybe. But I think I'm going with Lincoln Park.

Carey White should be on top of the list of candidates at Central right? they would be crazy not to bring him in.
Mike White
11:51
I like Carey. At Oliver and now Brashear, Carey has done an excellent job. With what he has to deal with sometimes, it's a wonder he still coaches. He has told me some stories of what he does. People don't know with everything City coaches have to deal with. I admire him.

I know a lot of coaches/people in Ohio who LOVE going to the state final 4 in Columbus every year. It really is an event. I know you are working, but do you truly enjoy the state finals? Do you know people who go every year like they do in Ohio? Any changes you would personally make?
Mike White
11:55
I would love if they did a Final Four in one place. I would absolutely love it. PIAA used to do that for a period in the 1970s. I remember watching those on Channel 13 with Chilly Billy, Bill Hillgrove and "Dr. Tony Brungo with your halftime stats." But with six classes, that's a lot of games to do in Final 4. Still it would be great. As far as "neutral" people going every year, yes I still know some. But nowhere near as many. When they moved the games out of Hershey the first time and moved them to Penn State, I think some people stopped going. The number of "neutral" people has gone down, no question. Just look at the shrinking of the crowds.

Tim McConnell took over a stacked girls team... not very impressive
Mike White
11:55
No doubt he took over a good team. But that team was also good last year and didn't do nearly as well. And there's something to be said about doing something with good talent. Team is undefeated. Come on. Give the guy some credit.

How much of Buddy V's decision to resign do you believe is motivated by the bare cupboard at Dice for the first time in what seems like a decade?
Mike White
11:56
I don't know. Probably some. But I do know he has wanted to coach in WPIAL for a while now. Tried to get NA job last time it was open.

Nice to see NCAA wrestling finals in Pittsburgh this week. Hope it helps refuel some of the dormant high school programs here.
Mike White
11:58
Really, probably nowhere in country with wrestling as strong as Western Pa. But that hasn't translated to more kids wrestling. I just hear more and more schools having trouble getting enough kids to field a team. Let's face it. Wrestling is so tough. I think it's toughest sport of any. Tougher than football. A lot of kids don't want to do that nowadays.

11:58
Should the PIAA have allowed Joey David to "telecommute" in the playoffs so he could go to Kentucky to see his son's last game?
Mike White
11:58
Mt. Lebanon said they checked it out. Was all legal. If it wasn't, I think they would've heard by now.

WPIAL will be well represented at NCAA wrestling championships this week....3 defending NCAA champs.  It is far and away the sport that produces the most talent in the wpial. Do you follow the sport?
Mike White
12:00
No question. I did a story a couple years ago on how this area is tremendous for wrestling. We have so many former WPIAL wrestlers ranked among the best in the country in college. Do I follow wrestling? I follow who it enough locally to do a story here and there on it. It's part of my job. But no, I don't follow it closely. But like I said before, I admire wrestlers. Toughest sport

Due to the numerous stories about interference with coaching in high school sports, will there eventually become a shortage of qualified coaches in high school sports.
Mike White
12:00
Probably. But there is always someone who wants to coach or thinks they can do the job. Might not be real qualified. But they think they are.
Hoop Guy
12:00
A lot of these other states also have a TRUE state champion, meaning the champs of each class play each other at the end, that would be pretty neat...
Mike White
12:01
No, it's not a "lot." New Jersey is one of the only ones. But I do like the idea.
12:02
Hey everyone, that's it for now. Time for lunch, a story and then head back to New Castle for Lincoln Park-Sharon. We'll do this again next Tuesday at 11 a.m. Wrap up hoops season and the championships. Everyone, be good.
