I go back and forth on Deer Lakes-Penn Cambria game. Penn Cambria is good. Shoot a lot of 3's. Basically play 5 out. Deer Lakes is one of the best stories in WPIAL basketball this year. I think Deer Lakes can defend well enough that they will a close one.

Mike, what I don’t understand about the competitive balance/transfer rule is transfers are approved and deemed eligible to play by governing bodies only if not done for solely athletic purposes to deter teams loading up. So, it seems to me Aliquippa football and New Castle basketball get treated in the reverse of competitive balance principle. Case in point, New Castle got moved to 6A and had to play Reading with enrollment ten times bigger than New Castle. The rule seems counterintuitive to me?
Mike White

There's good and bad in the rule. The thing is, I don't really think it's deterring transfers.

What happened to tradition of throwing Hershey kisses on the court ?
Mike White
11:38
Well I was at Charleroi last night for Lincoln Park and Uniontown and believe me, the tradition still lives.

Can you honestly say that if Rod was new this year to the area this year, with no reputation- You would seriously consider him for Fab 5?? The point is, he is still riding a LeBron wave long after he made basketball a hobby. He looked average- above avg most of the season.  But I understand he makes a great story and your job is to sell papers.
Mike White

Give me a break. We aren't going to sell more or less papers if we pick Rodney Gallagher. You by chance wouldn't be the parent of another player you think should be on Fab 5? You can have your opinion. All I can tell you there are a number of coaches who still think he is really, really good. I saw him twice this year and I also think he is still really good. We'll see if we pick him Fab 5. You saying he is living on his past reputation, I believe, is wrong.

More embarrassing the Penguins play or USC athletics ? Another humiliating championship game loss last night. Maybe its time to shut the whole thing down.
Mike White

Woooo hoooo. It's the Upper St. Clair hater. I was wondering if you would show up this week. I think you're right. Shut down all of Upper St. Clair athletics. No more sports at the school. You pay way too many taxes to have teams lose in championships. What in the world is with those athletes and coaches at that school? Maybe we can get you to be AD and coach three or four teams.

Speaking of the past…boy do I miss the Dapper Dan Roundball Classic. Those games were fantastic and I can’t wait to see the movie coming out about Sonny Vaccaro’s life.
Mike White
11:47
Ahhhh yes. The Dapper Dan. So many stories and funny moments from it. Some bad moments, too. I was the assistant director of the Roundball for its final couple years. It was an event that was totally unique to Pittsburgh. I could tell you so many stories from being involved. Sonny was great. Still is great. A guy who could never say no to anyone. I still talk to him every once in a while. The movie should be really interesting. Sonny has done so much, and it all started with the Dapper Dan Roundball. One of the things I miss is how it was such a big goal for local kids to make the Dapper Dan, even the preliminary game. I used to run the tryouts. Wow. They were a big deal. We don't have anything like that any more. But really, it had run its time. Things going on, it was time for the Dapper Dan to get out. But the the Dapper Dan Roundball was the McDonald's game before the McDonald's game.

Is Dame Givner related to Blinky Givner who played for South Hills in the early 70s
Mike White

No idea.

I have taken my son to every Imani game for inspiration. One of the smallest schools in the WPIAL MAKING HISTORY! And the sets they run are up there with the best of them! Go Saints!
Mike White

Nice. Yes, Omar Foster has done a nice job with this team.

Maybe. At least the teams won when I was there unlike these choke artists

Nice of you.
What do you do ?
11:48
So what do you write about in the Summer when there is no HS sports ? Fishing ? Golf ?
Mike White
11:49
There might not be games, but there is always high school stuff to write about. Heck, baseball doesn't end until mid to late June. By mid-July, you have to start getting football preseason stuff ready. And there is always offseason news. And believe it or not, I might take a few days off in July.

I think the 79 Roundball roster was the best ever. Do you remember a kid from Jeannette named Adam Bostick starting for the Pennsylvania team against guys like Dominique Isiah and Antoine Carr? Pa starters were also Larry Anderson ,Billy Varner, Sam Bowie
Mike White
11:55
That was the year that there was so much great talent around the country that Sonny had four teams and the Roundball was played over two nights. There were three U.S. teams and one Pa. team. Yes, I remember Bostick. But that Pa. team had, like you said, Anderson, Varner, Bowie, Joey Myers of Burrell, Rick Tunstall of ALtoona and others. Of the 40 players in that 1979 Roundball, 14 went on to play in NBA. Dominique Wilkins was probably the biggest name. But there was John Paxon, Darren Daye, Cliff Levingston, Steve Stipanovich, Antoine arr, Greg Kit, Dirk Minniefield, Rodney McCray, Rod Foster. And the pants of the uniforms that year were striped.

I heard a rumor that a kid playing in the Wpial basketball playoffs this season might be ineligible due to age next season. What is the cutoff age to participate in high school sports within PA?
Mike White
11:56
You can't turn 19 before July 1st of your senior year and be eligible. But it's not always age that makes a kid ineligible. It's that he might already have played four years in high school, like two of the Imani kids that are listed as juniors.

OK, time for lunch. More semifinal action tonight. Off to Hershey tomorrow. Everyone, be good.
