It should. If you have a good non-conference win, and your even with a team for seedings, I would hope that non-conference win puts a team over the top. Non-conference games have mattered some in past seedings.

I saw your tweet about Parham from North Hills talking to Indiana.  Is he already projected to be a power 5 recruit?
Mike White

You're asking about Royce Parham - 6-6 sophomore from North Hills. Robert Morris has offered. He talked with Indiana recruiting coordinator Brian Walsh (Moon grad) last week. A little birdie told me that a local school is now interested and might show more interest soon. Royce is good - and could be real good. He averaged 17 and 8 as a freshman in 6A. And he's bigger, stronger than a year ago and expanded his game. Played AAU this summer with Wildcats and Team Durant (Kevin Durant's situation). He could be Power 5 definitely. Lot will depend on how big he gets. If he gets to be 6-8 or 6-9, most definitely.

More on Royce Parham. I think he will get to be 6-8 or so. If he does, then you really have something. I say that because of his genes and his age. He is a sophomore and just turned 15 at the end of July. He could be in ninth, or even 8th grade if he wanted. Plus, his mother is 6-3. Was Kim Calhoun who was Parade All-American at Penn Hills, won 4 WPIAL titles and is still Penn State all-time blocked shots leader. And she kicks Royce's butt into shape and into working hard. And Royce has good grades. Lots going for him.

What do you think about the top teams in 4a beating the top teams in 5a?
Mike White
11:44
Well, TJ has already beaten Gateway and Belle Vernon already has defeated Penn-Trafford. The next two would be Aliquippa and McKeesport in 4A. Yes, I could see them being competitive with a few other top 5A teams.

I know it is not in your coverage area, but have you heard about the push to remove Ed McCluskey's name from Farrell's gym due to alleged abuse toward players? If you have heard it, thoughts on the push to remove?
Mike White
11:44
Wow. I did not know that. I don't want to comment on situation I don't know about.

NA with a huge win over Mentor. Defense is always solid and NA offense looks different this year. Coming into the modern ages, or they just waiting until PCC, Lebo, SV to unload the WingT?
Mike White
11:45
I don't know. I look at NA stats every week - and there is not a lot of impressive offensive stats. No standouts on offense. I think that offense will have to step up more against Lebo, Central, etc.

SV is on a little roll. Getting good QB play with ex-P-R staff up there. How close are they to competing this year with PCC/NA/Lebo - hearing they are a year away with Junior class being good.

Not to dodge question, but tough to say. I saw them against Moon. Offense was hardly on field and defense couldn't stand up to Moon's power. Nice win against Pine. Beat a pretty good North Hills team. Was close until fourth quarter. After Central beat Pine-Richland 49-35, Central might have a few warts. Seneca hasn't scored a lot of points, but I think they can be competitive with top teams in 6A. But they have to prove they can win.

Lebo is 3-0. Not sure of they've beaten anybody of the caliber of NA and PCC. Have some nice skill, but what's their OL and DL looking like. Heard they lost a key kid in the spring to LAX injury.
Mike White

No, Lebo hasn't played anyone as good as Central and NA. But c'mon. Upper St. Clair and Peters Township aren't tomato cans. Give them come credit.

What's up with Central's defense? That was one of the worst performances I've ever seen from them. OTOH, down 21 with a sophomore QB and they come back for the win outscoring Pine 42-7. Maybe tide is turning and PCC is going to be know for defense AND offense - also with ex-P-R influences.

Central hard to figure out. Give up only 12 points to Imhotep but only score 6. Offense doesn't do much in first half against Pine, but has a big second half. Defense gives up 35 points to Pine in first half. Maybe next few weeks the real Central will stand up. They could use a little more consistency I think.

20 years ago there were a number of programs that ran the triple option or at least ran the ball almost 100% of the time.  How many of those school still exist, if any?  I have seen a ton of games the past 5 years and many don't ever play under center.  I guess pistol and shotgun are king.
Mike White
11:52
I don't know many at all any more that run triple option. Mckeesport still does. You still some teams with wing-T, but they do some things out of the wing-T also. Spread offense, shotgun, no huddle is the rage. But not everyone doing that. Moon is winning and they're doing it with power and running football.

To chime in on 5A, I again believe its P-R's to win. Penn-Trafford did not dominate up front versus BV like I expected, and Gateway's OL needs to work. If P-R can get some skill players healthy, they should be playing for another championship. Mike, you know the status of Mellis and Eastburn?
Mike White
11:57
Sorry I do not. Pine has some issues to overcome, but like I said, they could very easily win that conference and do some damage in playoffs. There is plenty of talent still there.
11:58
And that's it for me. Tip your waitresses. I'll be back next Tuesday at 11 a.m. Everyone, be good.
