He was picked a preseason true freshman All-American by On3.com. Is he starting? I know he's playing a lot but is he starting at DB? He has nine tackles and a fumble recovery in three games. Future does look awfully bright.

Are Penn Hills baseball and softball not playing a wpial schedule anymore? I noticed they weren't in the new section alignments

Very good question. Thank you Roger B. I will have to check on that. You are correct. They are not on section alignment for either sports. So I guess they are going independent. It's been a struggle. For example, Penn Hills baseball was 1-15 last year and outscored 143-37. Softball was 2-15 and outscored 240-37. Sad. And to think, Penn Hills baseball was in the very first two state championship games. There was only one class back then. Imagine that. They lost in first state title game in 1977 to Hatboro-Horsham. And won title in 1978 over Valley under coach Neil Gordon, who won a state title in football also. Do you think any Pa. coach has ever won a state title in football and baseball?

I read the great article about how there are very few Saturday games with all the schools getting lights now days. That leads me to my next question, how schools many still play on natural grass as opposed to turf that could be a fun story with all the rain we have had. I believe Latrobe is the only school in the top 3 classifications that plays on grass although they do have a turf field and stadium if they had to use it.

Well Stang Gang, I did a story on turf fields in WPIAL in 2023. Link below. In 2023, 3/4 of the WPIAL fields were turf. I bet it's a few more now. In 1993, there were four turf fields. Amazing, isn't it? But good for high school sports. Those turf fields get a lot of use from many sports.

I hear the North Hills Band is doing a musical tribute to Mike White at homecoming. Is that true ?

Well I will be at their homecoming game on Oct. 2. So it must be true. All Donnie Iris songs at halftime will be appropriate for me. Please tell the North Hills band that. By the way, I've been told North Hills has its largest band ever. Tremendous.

I was a bit surprised that Pine Richland didn't have more for CC.  Taylor made 2 huge plays...one a long td reception out of the normal offense and the other a kick off return to the house.  Strader had a long td on a scramble and a few other nice scrambles.    The long td pass to Taylor was one of the few plays of  note out of the regular offense.  It wasn't as bad as the Pine losses I saw against McDevitt and Peters, but they still pretty much reverted to a sandlot offense when the going got tough.    They have very good receivers and a 4 year qb and still no precision passing game.  I don't see them winning a state title like that...especially since they seem smaller up front than they have been recently

Well X, you hit on something. OLine is much smaller than recent years and I don't see them having a very strong running game, unless Oobi scrambles around or breaks one on an RPO. But Oobi and Taylor are terrific. That makes them really good.

I'm very impressed with Owen Herrick's accuracy and zip.   Do you think being a 3 start impacted his committing so early to Illinois?  I'm trying to understand the upside to Owen for the early commit.    Is there typically  a timeframe to accept an offer?

I like Herrick. But no time frames any more. Heck, Kemon Spell committed to Penn State in his sophomore season. Herrick had a few power conference offers. I did not talk to him. Maybe he thought he should take one. Neither Pitt or Penn State offered. I don't know if that says anything or not.

Who, Central Catholic? By all means, yes. Central beat Bergen Catholic pretty well. Bergen beat St. Joe's Prep, 33-3.

Herrick's size and lack of running ability are probably limiting factors in his recruitment.  As far as a high school qb, he hits guys in stride...at the right time.  Strader can be entertaining, but he is far from that.   In the McDevitt and Peters losses, he was downright bad.
