Before I head out to Nemacolin Country Club (not the Nemacolin resort) to cover WPIAL 3A golf championships, let's talk a little. Store is now open for chat - and I wish I was playing that course today.

Your early thoughts on WPIAL boys’ basketball. Any preseason favorites?
Mike White
11:01
Wow. Right out of the gate with basketball favorites? But OK, if that's what you want. Pine-Richland in 6A, although 6A is going to be very god this year as far as depth of quality teams. New Castle 5A. Lincoln Park 4A. Ellwood City 3A? Hey, they won it last year and have almost everyone back, including the Splash Brothers. OLSH in 2A. Bishop Canevin in 1A. How's that?

Best HS FB player you’ve ever seen in WPIAL. Go.

In no order - LaVar Arrington, Terrelle Pryor, Brian Davis.

Good matchup right outside the WPIAL Friday: Farrell vs Wilmington. Do you know if those two have ever expressed any interest in returning to WPIAL? Put those two in a conference with other 2A Lawrence County schools and it would be a strong group. Maybe they like beating up on the other small D10 schools in football every year but you’d think it would get boring for them.
Mike White
11:04
I don't know if Wilmington has expressed interest, but I know Farrell has. Few years ago they wanted back in. But District 10 and PIAA didn't want it to happen. I'd probably guess Farrell still might like back in WPIAL.

LEBO is for real….Palko has instilled confidence in the cake eaters!
Mike White
11:06
Wait, are they the cake eaters or caviar kids? Whatever, they're good this year. Real good. Should be heckuva game Friday with Central Catholic. But really, is it a foregone conclusion they will meet again in championship, no matter what happens Friday?
11:08
And almost forgot. Happy "Officials Appreciation Week" to everyone. Be nice to a zebra this week. I think it's a nice idea by the PIAA. Hopefully, more people might become officials, but I have serious questions about that. Younger people don't really seem to have much interest in it. But more officials are needed.

How about WPIAL girls’ hoops early favorites??
Mike White
11:11
Geez, what do you want next? Softball favorites? Let's go Upper St. Clair and North Alleheny in 6A. Chartiers Valley 5A. No idea 4A, maybe Southmoreland? North Catholic 3A. Neshannock 2A and Rochester 1A.

mike what do you think about Kiski so far a close game against north hill s go Cavs against fox chapel
Mike White
11:13
Kiski Area is good, not great. North Hills was the first real test. Close game. Sam Albert The Great has Kiski Area much improved, but they could likely finish third in the conference now, unless they beat Pine. They better be careful of Fox Chapel also.

What do you think of the Moon vs Peters game this week
Mike White
11:16
Peters being routed by USC was a little eye opening. I don't know what to think of Peters now. I like Moon.

What about the Butler boys BB team this year? Anything to go with DC?
Mike White
11:18
Butler will certainly be ranked in top five. As I said, Class 6A is very good with depth of quality teams this year. I'm not saying any 6A team will win a state title, but it's pretty good this year. The North section with Pine, Butler, Seneca, North Hills, NA is really, really tough this year. And they all play each other three times in that section. What a grind. As for Devin Carney, he was Fab 5 last year. Could be really fun to watch this year. He'll put it up from the volleyball line. And often make it. But Butler has more than him back.

Any unexpected story lines or teams to watch as we get into the WPIAL soccer playoffs?
Mike White
11:20
Is Harry Kane healthy? How many goals will Pele score?
11:21
Kid named Sergio Garcia is scoring lot of goals for Brentwood. Seriously. But that's par for the course for Sergio. I hear he has a couple irons in the fire for the playoffs.

Looks like Lincoln Park basketball plucked one of Aliquippa's starters to join their all start team this year.  Any word on the elgibility or will the WPIAL ever do anything to stop this school from blantenly disregarding the rules?  I guess they will be up to 5A next cycle with all of the transfers.
Mike White
11:27
Hold on first. I'm not going to sit here and say I'm a big Lincoln Park fan. But how can you say they are blatantly disregarding the rules? (Nice try on spelling blatantly, by the way). They're just doing what the rules allow. They're a charter school. Kids from anywhere can go there. Sure, we know some are going for basketball but there's no way to prove that most of the time. So don't always blame Lincoln Park. If you want to do anything, blame the system. It's the same as complaints with Catholic, private and other charter schools. PIAA isn't going to change the system. So you have to deal with it, like it or not.
11:28
But anyone who thinks charter school teams and some Catholic school and private school teams don't have an advantage being able to get kids from anywhere, please stop.

rough stretch for my boys in blue, no game last week with Beth Center and now we shut down all of our sports this week so no game with Uniontown. Do you think the cancellations get better or worse as the season goes on?
Mike White
11:30
I think you are talking about Washington, correct? There will continue to be cancellations, but I don't think they will become rampant. Maybe more kids will also be vaccinated come playoff time.

Top 5 best shooters you’ve ever seen in WPIAL boys’ BB history…Go!
Mike White
11:32
Geez, that's a tough one right off the top of my head. Micah Mason and T.J. McConnell most definitely. 1-2 in career 3-pointers in WPIAL. What's funny about that is T.J. rarely shoots 3's now in NBA. But you might see more of the 3's from him this year. A birdie has told me he changed his shot some this summer and really worked on 3's. And who helped him change his shot? His Dad. T.J. worked extensively with his Dad on his shot this summer.

your thoughts on a soccer team that wins 17-0? a. no problem b. terrible sportsmanship c. wont say bc i don't want to offend anyone
Mike White
11:37
Not good, but not as ridiculous as that 30-0 game with Fox Chapel over Southmoreland this year. Now that's bad. I read where Southmoreland coach wasn't upset. He was playing a lot of his younger players. But maybe after 20, you say, "What in the world is the point of this." Hey, a few years ago Upper St. Clair and Brashear girls played. USC was up 8-0 at halftime. Brashear was so overmatched, the teams had an idea. They split up and played the second half with the teams mixed. Brashear loved it. They learned things. The girls from both teams enjoyed. Maybe some other people could learn from that. Then again, probably not.

Do you expect LP or maybe a new charter school in PGH area start a football program?
Mike White
11:37
No, I don't. Lincoln Park kids play for Western Beaver football under a cooperative sponsorship.

11:37
Any early indicators about which schools will be moving up or down for next football season? Or any schools wanting to play up? Hopefully they expand 6A
Mike White
11:40
No way to tell even if we had enrollment figures for all WPIAL schools. Because you don't know what PIAA classification cutoffs will be. So it would all be just conjecture until PIAA gets enrollments for all schools and figures out class cutoffs. And it is not up to WPIAL to expand 6A. The PIAA tries to make even amount of teams in all classifications for entire state. So wherever the enrollment cutoffs are, that's what the WPIAL has to go by. Problem is eastern Pa. has many bigger schools than Western Pa. Thus, not many 6A schools in WPIAL.

I just want to give a shout out to Susie McConnell.  It has been a while since anyone has mentioned a McConnell on the chat!

Good point and great insight by you. I'd like to give the McConnell parents a shoutout - Tom and Sue. Hip, hip, hooray! They deserve it.
