vested interest Mike my son plays for Knoch. Plus enjoy your commentary.
Mike White

OK. Good luck. I won't knock Knoch any more.

Clairton now with 2 losses and Jeannette looming.  Can't say I expected to see 3 regular season losses for that team.
Mike White
11:32
Agreed. But I thought two was possible. Even from preseason, no way they are beating Aliquippa this year. And now the Jeannette game makes Clairton look like underdog. Haven't seen Clairton. Looking from outside, looks like they don't have those playmakers on offense that they used to always have.

Any idea when the schedule for championships at Heinz Field is determined (which class plays at which time slot)?  Is that determined by which games Root wants to show live as opposed to after Pens game on delay?
Mike White
11:34
Yep. Games are on Saturday the 18th at Heinz. By the way it's now AT&T SportsNet. C'mon, get with it. They won't announce schedule of games until a week or two ahead of time. But there is a Penguins game that night again. So, first two will be live. I would say look for 3A and 6A to be first two again live on TV.
By the way, AT&T is televising Aliquippa-Quaker Valley this Friday.

EF having a great season and have a few big time players!  What do you think?
Mike White
11:37
Yes, Elizabeth Forward is certainly moving forward (like that one???).  Won five of first six games for first time since 1990 (you like that factoid??). And while they have some nice players, forgive me if I ask who these "big time" players are??

Some good 2A battles this week that will help shape the playoff picture. EA vs. Steel Valley, Riverside vs. CWNC.  Thoughts?
Mike White
11:39
EA-Steel Valley excellent game. I'll take Steel Valley. I think Riverside is a better team also ... But speaking of East Allegheny. They have standout WR-TE TJ Banks. He's going to announce his college choice in a week. Some people were wondering if Pitt is going to get back in the game with him because Pitt lost a TE recruit, who de-committed this weekend and chose Stanford. It seems unlikely. As of Monday night, Banks hadn't heard anything from Pitt. Just a hunch but look for Banks to pick WVU unless something drastic changes.

Biggest surprise in lower classifications:
Burgettstown, Elizabeth Forward, California, Quaker Valley, or Mohawk?
Mike White
11:41
Good question. I'll go Quaker. Just with everything that happened to them - coach quitting just before season and them hiring track coach Jerry Veshio, who hadn't coached high school football since the 1980s, and was pulled out of the PA announcer's booth to coach. Story of the year so far?

Quip v Quaker this week who ya got and why?
Mike White
11:43
A most interesting game. I think Quaker gives a good game. Game will be decided up front. I like Quaker Valley's lines, but Quippa is big and really good up front. Plus on that defense, LB are good and there are two Div. 1 DBs. Hard to see QV scoring enough to win.

I know we are mostly football here, but I think I saw you attended the WPIAL golf championships.  I just read scores and it appears those kids can really play, one of them shot a 67!
Mike White
11:45
I'll talk golf any time. I wish I was out playing today. The 67 was at girls championships at Diamond Run. By Caroline Wrigley of NA. Unbelievable score. I wasn't at the girls championships. I was at 3A boys the day before. I think there is an excellent group of boy golfers in 3A right now, as good as we've had past few years. Chris Sabol of Moon won. Unlikely winner. Yes, those kids can play. Almost as good as me.

Which Class(es) do you think WPIAL stands the best chance at taking in States?
Mike White
11:46
I think Pine has the best shot at GETTING THERE. But someone from the East is usually really good, like St. Joe's. As far as winning, I'd say the 3A team from the WPIAL and maybe 2A. Definitely not 4A or 5A.

You mentioned Stacy Robinson from Union in a previous article about a small school coach getting it done. Wanted to thank you for that, as coach Rob has long been a good man and coach, but what other small school coaches are out there that battle numbers and still find a way to compete?
Mike White
11:50
Heck, Ryan Cecchini at Avella has found a way to even make that school competitive a few times the past few years.  I think what I've learned over the many years of doing this is that there are a number of good coaches out there who might not be recognized as such because they don't win championships. But at some of these schools, being competitive and simply making the playoffs is a job well done. But I think too many parents - and soem school boards - think you're no good if you don't win big. Hogwash.

We all know the final 5 for Kwantel Raines but where do you suspect he’ll commit to?
Mike White
11:51
I have no inside scoop but if I had to guess either Pitt or WVU.
Wike Mhite
11:54
On the coaches issue...I think the common parent/fan doesn't realize what it takes to actually win WPIAL (and states even tougher).  For 80% of schools they should be happy to make the playoffs each year and if you have a coach doing that you should thank him.  It's not an easy job!
Mike White
11:55
Thank you Wike Mwhite. Well said. Lot more to coaching high school than winning. But don't kid yourself, as a coach, you better have that burning desire to win. And although people shouldn't expect WPIAL titles, there has to be some expectation of being competitive.
12:00
Alright, enjoyed it everyone. The questions keep coming. Stretch drive in football starts this week. Time to get a sandwich and head to a meeting. We'll talk again next Tuesday at 11. Everyone, be good.
